    25 Years of RoboCop

Part man, part machine, all cop.

I know I just posted a thread on The Incredible Hulk TV series. And I recalled seeing somewhere that Ken Johnson had been approached about directing the first RoboCop movie. He declined due to the violence. I checked and, sure enough, this is the 25th anniversary of the original RoboCop movie.

I was all of 14 years old when my father took me to see it. And I loved it! At the same time, Murphy's shooting death in the original film is still the most horrific movie death I've ever seen. Even today at age 39, I have to mute the TV and turn on the closed captions in order to watch Murphy's death. But, I still cheer when I see Robo kill the punks who shot him up! I had an issue of Starlog magazine that surprised me when it said that RoboCop was originally rated "X" for the violence. The cuts were made and it got an "R" rating. I watched and liked the 2 sequels (though I won't be adding them to my collection anytime soon). I have a complete run of the Marvel Comics RoboCop series and it's not bad reading. I also have the RoboCop Vs Terminator series as well.

Many years later, I got my hands on the Criterion Collection's edition of RoboCop which contained the "X" rated version. Murphy's shooting death is even worse in this one. And it makes his killers' deaths even sweeter!

I watched a RoboCop film on Sy-Fy in the past and groaned at the Richard Eden TV series. RoboCop: the 20th Anniversary Collector's Edition cost a mere $21 at Best Buy and it was $21 well spent. I've heard that they're redoing Robocop. They'd better be careful or they might anger RoboCop fans.

    Let's hear from you.

You don't know how old I felt when I found out that George Lucas was going to release Return of the Jedi in 3D on... Star Wars' 40th anniversary!

I dunno how we were able to, but we convinced my mom to let us rent the VHS. My bro and I watched it one day. I thought some stuff was wicked violent, but I'm sure now I wouldn't. I enjoyed it and I think I remember a cartoon.

There were a couple cartoons based on RoboCop. I first saw it when I was much older (after it had been out for a while) and I thought it was indeed very violent, but hilarious in a strange way too. I learned later that it was supposed to be - it is actually a black comedy.

I remember seeing this when it first came out, I was 10. To this day it is one of my all-time favorite movies.

I guess the violence didn't reallt affect me as I ended up becoming a cop.

The first R rated movie I ever went to was RoboCop 2 with my dad. I used to spend hours playing the NES RoboCop game.

I used to love Robocop and I expect I still do, tho I haven't watched it in over 10 years so who knows?

Oh and I had no problem watching Murphy get shot to heck.

I find it interesting that the Robocop alpha cartoon seems to be largely based on the unused script for Robocop 2.

Also, 25 years of Robocop will soon be ruined by the new movies which won't even use the known design.

Indeed, just like Showgirls, which is also directed by Paul Verhoeven.

This thread got me inspired to buy RoboCop on blu-ray today. It was only $10 at Best Buy. It is a bare bones release, though, which is too bad. It has probably been at least a good ten years since I have watched the movie last.

It has ALSO been 25yrs since fox channel and Married with children as well where on the air. Plus on the robocop I went to see that movie and it was hard to see it then and still is cause I guess I wanted the happy ending for him and it didn't happen.

ah, I loved and still ove the first two RoboCop movies, esp. the first one. For some reason the scene stuck most in my head is when one of the evil guys crashes into the tank of toxic waste, coming out with his skin melting had quite an impact on me back then, hehe...
