I was a huge fan of the to line when I was a kid, and I'd love to take part in the new Classics line but budget restraints keep me for subscribing. So I was just wondering what would be considered the Core of the Masters Of the Universe characters / Classics.
He Man and Skeletor are a give, as are Man at arms and Beastman. Teela and Evilyn.
I think you can see where I'm going with this.
Who else would you think would be the MOTUC Essentials?

I don't think anyone else is ESSENTIAL-essential. I say Two-bad and Mantrnna are essential, but that's just to me and my collection. Without these names, MOTU wouldn't be MOTU.

Pretty much these are the major, major characters.
Glimmer, Bow, Catra, Shadow Weaver, King Hsss, Hydron, Flogg are all important characters, but I think they fall short of Essential status.
Except for the Horde part, our lists pretty much match.
With all the complaints about XXX character not being released yet, Mattel should be given credit for getting almost all of the major characters out within the first two years of the line.

Kinda think you did. The original poster was asking about essentials because he can't afford a sub. I doubt he can afford 40+ figures either.
What's essential about Mosquitor? Name one thing done with the character in the last 30 years that makes him essential. The question isn't "Who do you like?".

Well he probably can't afford Teela, Sorceress, Fisto, Beast Man, Tri Klops, etc. if he is just getting into the line today? And really you're going to pick out Mosquitor? What has been done with Scareglow, Faker, Zodac, Spikor, Jitsu? Just my list of characters I find essential to Masters and most of it is based off of the vintage line, and yes a few are not in figure form yet but I find them just as important, but the original poster did say "characters / Classics". So I interpreted as characters not even in figure form yet, probably not what the poster was looking for, but they'll get a few others points of views to see a list containing those.
It depends on what are your favorite parts of MOTU:
Some will say the Original MOTU 8 back and call it a day, but I'm a fan of the entire universe so here's my list which has a sampling from all the branches.
My list contains characters that have NOT BEEN RELEASED YET, but they're part of the "core characters" for that faction.

As much as I love 200X there are no "essential" 200X characters
The closest thing to Essential characters would be Count Marzo and Chief Carnivus... just to have someone from the good guys and bad guys from that era.

As you can see from the responses it is personal preference. What one person considers essential is different from just about everyone else. If you were really into it when you were young I would say it's whoever you're most nostalgic for. For many of us it's simply the figures we actually has as children.

I agree. For me, it was a bit of that, but largely the "main"-ish" characters that would be essential to a good telling of a story.
This is a good question, and I think it depends on how far you you want to ripple for the mythos...

Beyond that, I would go by whoever looks cool to you or appeals to you. The Snake Men could be considered an essential faction, but I don't think any stand out over any other to make that one character significant. For POP I'd say Glimmer and Kowl would be essential if you wanted to include them, but they're not out... Man E Faces, Stratos, and Zodac are relatively important... As are the Horde, but who you would picks as your favorites out of them is up to you.
Must Haves before MOTUC is complete! Queen Angella, Glimmer, Mermista, Castaspella, Kowl, Imp, Lookee, Madame Razz Scorpia, Mantenna, Two Bad Blade, Gwildor, Saurod Hydron, Flogg
Just buy whoever you think looks cool, and make up your own canon!
