Nick Fury was the connecting factor IMO. He sould have bought it. While I didn't like him in Avengers, I'm sure there are just as many if not more who liked him.

The real Fury has never been portrayed as devious as Ultimate Fury has been where he threatens teenagers just to get them under his thumb. He lost his eye since he refused to get medical attention in order to help his men.

fury is not, never has been, a hero - not in the sense you mean. he's not like spiderman, cap, superman, etc. he's a bad@$$ mofo who will do whatever it takes to protect is country and his world.

Nick Fury was turned into an American James Bond when he was brought to modern times. The "bad@$$ mofo" is Ultimate Fury since he was drawn to look like Jackson(and that skinny old man is considered tough for some reason just because he kills people in a couple Tarantino movies). He may have done things that Captain America would disapprove of(at least pre-Brubaker), but 616 Fury was loyal to his friends & comrades. Ultimate Fury is a character right out of a Jason Bourne novel.

In the movie at least he fought the higher powers to save his friends, he tried to ground the planes that were going to nuke the city.

Yes he manipulated the Avengers to come together, but I don't really see that as scheming. Once they worked together they found out they enjoyed it, why is it a big deal if they got that push to do so. Coulson was going to have his fate happen either way, Fury just found a way to utilize it for the team.

I also felt the Coulson death to be necessary to service the story. A minor character dying to cement the disparate individuals into working for a common goal (mainly Cap and Iron Man). Plus I love the sneak peek at the Civil War struggle between the 2!

Because that push involved taking the blood of a fallen friend and smearing it on a prized possession of his. It just came off distasteful to me. It reminded me of what Jesse Jackson supposedly did with the blood of Martin Luther King Jr.

And with that having totally taken this thread off topic, I'll end my part in this discussion. I did still like this movie(after feeling all alone in my dislike of Cap & Thor last year). I just feel it's not the perfect movie that some are making it out to be(which reminds me of my feelings with The Dark Knight as well)

If they go that route, at least Mark Millar will be nowhere near it.

Are we sure Coulson is dead? I know it was a pretty bad wound but he didnt die right away so all we saw him do is close his eyes and thats it. Everything else is off screen and Fury only said the Medical team "Call It" He didnt say dead. He could of been giving them another one of his "pushes" Also This just crossed my mind. How did Fury know were to get the Trading Cards if Coulson was dead? All I am saying I would not be surprised if he was not dead and I could see this being used in the next movie to add more trouble between Fury and the Avengers..

Well, nothing is "for sure" in comic books or comic book movies but I believe that Coulson died. What I heard in that scene was that Fury said "Coulson is down. The medical team called it." Which I understand in medical circles refers to the time of death of an individual.

As for the cards, even Maria Hill knew Coulson kept the cards in his locker. I believe Nick Fury would know that too and as S.H.I.E.L.D. director, he would have the master keys to all agents lockers. So getting the cards wouldn't be a big deal for THE spy (as Tony Stark put it).

Yes there was. He needed to die to advance the story and give the heroes that push they needed to work as a team.

What is it with people on this baord not like characters that die? Sorceress, MAA, and now Colson? Next they will be complaining when someone dies in The Dark Knight Rises (and someone will).

And yet the Avengers have been around for almost 50 years and didn't need that as a part of their origin.

True but this is the movie universe not the comic universe. They needed something that they could connect with, and that the audience would buy, that would make them put aside their petty differences. He fits that perfectly as he was weaved through many of the movies already so has ties to a lot of them.

I am not sure if you have read some of the original comics and origins lately but many of them are not that amazing. Simplistic is fine but sometimes you need motivations more fleshed out instead of "we're forming a team cause teams are cool". A lot of the origins just are not that fully realized as were many comics back in the day but those were simpler times and readers today have been subjected to many many plots so need something more sophisticated than the comics of the 60s. They may not have had a death in the original origin but there have been MANY deaths since then to reinforce their need to avenge.

With that said, I HATED that he died. I wish they could have just used the invasion as the catalyst but we needed them to fall apart and then work together BEFORE the invasion really started and the only way to do that is for a death to occur to galvanize them.

dammit. I had a feeling Coulson was going to die. since Iron Man I liked him and feared he'd die in Thor. doo doo in a diaper that sucks.

Question is the second after credits scene worth sticking around for?

People have favourite characters and get attached to them, we lose people that we love in real life, its understandable to want immortality for something that CAN be immortal.

Its a comedic scene, not really important to the story and you gain nothing by having waited for it.

Well, it's free and you only have to wait 4-5 minutes for it...sure. Unless you got to urinate at once. It's not vital but you paid to see the whole movie. Might as well, k-man.

Just make sure you wait for the end credit scene, that one is worth it if you are into the comics

I think we could see Coulson again in flashbacks, particularly if there's a SHIELD movie. I wonder if we will have a character like him connecting future movies. I mean sure they've got Fury, but he can't cameo all the time and Coulson was a good face to see when Fury wasn't around. Actually I wonder if future SHIELD agents will be more sinister now that there is clearly some dissension within their organization. We never did learn who authorized those nukes. Even if it was Fury's bosses, how did they circumvent his authority on the Helicarrier, and how many other agents will follow them instead of Fury? And by the way, was Jenny Aggutter one of the council members? I saw her name in the case and cannot recall who she might have played.

Of course I didn't like seeing Coulson die either, and I agree Whedon is way too kill-happy with characters, but I felt it used well even if it was formulaic. Gotta love "so that's what it does" too. Also I thought Fury ruining the trading cards to make their owner's death matter more was actually very good. The world was at stake, we don't need to be worried about keeping them mint, particularly when the man who cared made it clear that he considered his life forfeit to bring the Avengers together. His dying words are to that effect, more or less giving Fury the reason to believe that the "push" he later manufactured was what Coulson wanted. I get taking issues with the actions because no one likes being manipulated, yet I felt it was all done in a way I could stomach. Also the entire affair was probably the only hint towards a character arc as Tony Stark goes from "his first name is 'agent'" to "His name was Phil!" Not especially deep, but it was a progression I liked.
