Oh no! The SDCC reveal this year turned out to be a real bummer! So many upset fans and so many fans upset at other fans! This really is too bad, SDCC exclusive reveals are supposed to make toy collectors feel like they are looking at the Sears wish book under their covers with a flashlight two weeks before Christmas!
I would have gladly bought these for $20 a pop as part of the 30th sub, but these seem terrible as a SDCC exclusive. I don't think they will have the same impact on the average-Joe SDCC comic fan that "Dragon-Man sculpted by renowned toy sculpters The Four Horsemen" or "Laser Knight created by DC Comics super stud Geoff Johns" would have had. The SDCC exclusive is better off used as a marketing tool to gain the line wider exposure. I'm not saying Spector or Lazer-Lot are better designs than these, but I think they would go over better with the SDCC crowd.
If you're going to make an "exclusive" figure then make it truly exclusive to the die hard collectors. Stop with this "different pack-outs for Matty" nonsense. In this age of EBay and online retail anyone who really wants the SDCC exclusives can get them. Stop selling them on Matty because all it does is lead to ridiculous marketing ideas like this one buck, two heads for three figures baloney. Pulled it off with Marlena, but three? You mattel guys know damn well a lot of fans are now forced to buy three or more Vykrons for no good reason. I don't care if it's good business sense, it's bad form, and bad form can kill a good business! None of these designs are even good enough to warrant the $30 ooh-la-la treatment, let alone thrice.
And the whole "reward those who went to SDCC" argument is moot because none of these guys stand out from one another and you plan on offering even more selection to the Matty collector crowd. I've been to SDCC and wasted hours standing in line at the mattel booth only to walk away empty handed due to terrible planning on their part. Not even attending can guarantee getting the exclusive.
It's the delivery of this item that is an insult to collectors. The line is a gift to Mattel and TOyguru due to the insane amount of parts re-use, so stop being so cheap! Many collectors are going to spend $90 these mediocre figures and have two spare sets of each armor. That is such a waste!
I really don't mind these figures but I despise the way they are being sold. All three of these guys, as well as Spector and Lazer-Lot could have been better utilized in different situations and the fans would have been generally pleased rather than generally peeved. I'm certain that there wouldn't have been near the amount of negativity to any of these figures if they had been marketed properly.
The worst part is I'm a loose AND carded completist (for no reason other than I thought it would be neat to have a complete line on card for once)! What a mistske that turned out to be! I honestly think that is about to end in July.![]()

I left my wallet in El Segundo...
i think he's the perfect candidate for this year's exclusive. i love the barbarian version!
did anyone mention that we're already getting the 200x/younger/slimer Prince Adam forearms and hands/gloves?!
Just to clarify, it's been very thoroughly established:
SDCC - Barbarian pack-out
Mattycollector.com - Space OR Military pack-out available.
Does anyone see the different kinds of customizing and creative he-man mashups you could make with this...
I don't really see how anyone would be forced into buying 3 of them because they look different in a package when the product is the same...
I think Tri-clops or MAA head on the tank body would look sweet...the barbarian chest strap would be cool on wun-dar...
AND
Now they have all kinds of NEW molds to use further in the line!! For what I couldnt tell you...

Where's the fish!!??
MERMISTA
I like them!, still not sure if i'll get 1 or three but i want to display all three versions, but i might experiment on bucks to use.
Got to say i don't understand the arguement of "It was a failed idea", one it wasnt it morphed into he-man in which alot of the idea remains, but also just because something is an unused or rejected idea then dosen't mean its a bad idea. Imagine if George Lucas couldn't make star wars because 20th century fox originally rejected it, same thing with ALien. Imagine we couldn't have MOTUC because 200x quote unquote FAILED in mangements eyes...
I hope it is not a random pick by DR as to whether you get the spaceman or tankman
With this year exclusive I'm very disappointed.
In terms of the figure itself, I like it - I'm a sucker for the prototype/concept art figures, and will be getting three, so I can display all the different looks. However, it still seems like kind of an odd choice to me to make it the SDCC exclusive. With the possible exception of King Grayskull (and maybe He-Ro), the recent SDCC exclusives have all arguably been must-have characters, especially Marlena and Adam/Orko. Whether you're a Filmation fan, a 200X fan, or a fan of the original toyline/minicomics, it's be hard to argue that Marlena, Adam, and Orko wouldn't be considered main characters. Vykron, on the other hand, just doesn't strike me as a character that's nearly as much of a 'must have' for fans across the board, so I'm still a little puzzled as to why they made him for SDCC (especially in the anniversary year), rather than as a normal subscription figure.
I'm also curious as to why he's one figure with three drastically different looks, rather than three separate characters, although I suspect the bio will clear this up. Without any additional information, I figure I'll put the barbarian Vykron on my Preternia shelf, the spaceman Vykron on my NA shelf, and the tank Vyrkon... well, I honestly have no idea where a guy with a tank head would be a good fit. Anyone want to share their plans for who they're planning to display the tank Vykron alongside?
I just hope this trend continues when we hit the anniversary of POP. I have wanted the concept She-Ra for a while.

Would I be more excited about Vykron if I paid attention to stuff like The Power & Honor Foundation? I've never heard of Vykron at all. I'm sort of "meh" about him. I just hope that the alternate pack outs for the SDCC and Matty versions don't have different bios. It still bugs me that I don't have Marlena's SDCC bio in my collection. I need to get around to buying her one of these days.
IMNSHO this kind of "concept" figure is really pushing the limits of what sort of things should be in the line. I haven't done an exact count, but it just feels like the balance of the line is skewing more and more obscure. It worries me that stuff like this could hurt interest in the line. I mean, there are still a ton of top tier characters to get to from the vintage line, 200X Filmation and even NA. I know they want to spread stuff out, I get it, but spread it out with stuff that people actually want, like Masque, Shokoti, or Seahawk. Basically I guess what I'm saying is this Vykron guy is too far down the list for me. They could spread the A and B listers between C, D and E listers and keep a lot of people happy, but this guy is an F-lister, and I wish they would chill out on the F-listers. (To clarify, I would call anyone that has only ever appeared as a concept and nowhere else, and F-lister.) Stuff like this is OK on rare occasions, but it's just getting to be too much.
