NFL great Junior Seau has died

So sad. He was one of the best players in the game and a class act too.

    http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nfl-sh...182120394.html

TMZ first reported that retired NFL star Junior Seau was found dead Wednesday morning, and that the police were investigating after his housekeeper found the NFL legend with a fatal shutgun wound to the chest. He was 43 years old.

The report has been confirmed by the North County Times:

Pro football great and Oceanside sports legend Junior Seau has apparently committed suicide, found by a housekeeper with a gunshot wound to the chest, according to multiple sources.

Oceanside Mayor Jim Wood said he learned of the death from police Chief Frank McCoy.

Police responded to Seau's home on The Strand on Wednesday after receiving a call about a reported suicide. The San Diego County medical examiner's office said an investigator was sent to the scene.

The San Diego Chargers issued a statement at approximately noon PT:

Everyone at the Chargers is in complete shock and disbelief right now...We ask everyone to stop what they're doing and send their prayers to Junior and his family.

If Seau committed suicide by shooting himself in the chest, it is similar to the way former Chicago Bears great Dave Duerson ended his life. Duerson shot himself in the chest on February 17 -- the method used so that his brain could be examined for symptoms of CTE (chronic traumatic encephalopathy), a trauma-induced disease common to NFL players and others who have received repeated blows to the head.

Seau, a 12-time Pro Bowler and 6-time First-Team All-Pro, was selected fifth overall in the 1990 NFL draft after an outstanding collegiate career at USC. He played with the San Diego Chargers through the 2002 season, spent 2003-2005 with the Miami Dolphins, and then signed with the New England Patriots in time for the 2006 season. In New England's perfect regular season of 2007, he played in all 16 games and started four. Seau first retires after that season, only to come back and play in 2008 and 2009 before finally leaving the NFL for good.

"I'm going to go surf," he told Showtime upon his January, 2010 retirement announcement. Whatever happens, I can honestly say, that that probably was my last game."

Seau is the eighth member of the Chargers 1994 Super Bowl team to pass. We will keep you updated on this story as more news is confirmed.

    That sucks, RIP

I wonder if he was depressed or if it was the head injury that caused other problems as it does many football players and professional wrestlers

It is very disheartening when someone dies, but I feel especially saddened when its a suicide. It touches very close to home.

    RIP Junior Seau.

Very sad to hear this news. When I was growing up, Junior Seau wasn't just the best player on the Chargers, he was the entire franchise. 12 consecutive Pro Bowls, 6 time first team All-Pro, and a member of the NFL's 75th Anniversary All-Decade team for the 1990's. Sad news.

It is tragic. And even when they don't take their own lives, football players die young - 2 decades sooner than the average person. The human body just wasn't made to take that kind of punishment.

Or that kind of brain damage. He was shot in the chest. If it turns out to be suicide, that's an open invitiation to study the brain for post-concussion syndrome. Andre Waters did it in 2006. The price some of these guys pay for our entertainment. Scary stuff.

We dont have much in San Diego by way of sports championships but what little we did have Junior was the on top of the list of what we did have. He was my hero and he helped me to raise my head high as a San Diegan when we had very little to cheer for as charger fans. Today was really painful for me and many other people from San Diego. I met him last year and I was so starstruck that I didnt get to tell him what he meant to me. It hurts....especially since I had many other chances to do so when I became friends with his relatives and I would see him all the time at his establishment.

Dave Duerson from the Chicago Bears also took his life the same way last year, some suspect for similar reasons.

I have no doubt in my mind it was brain related, the same thing that caused Chris Benoit to kill his wife and others to have breakdowns or commit suicide. Its the dirty little secret not talked about in professional wrestling and the NFL (or any sport where the head is hit a ridiculous amount of time)

I, too, am very saddened to hear of Junior Seau's passing. I didn't know him at all but I have heard nothing but good things said about the man. My deepest sympathies go out to his family.

I wonder how many more of these head-trauma related deaths it's going to take before people wake up.

With all the sports science and technology out there, wouldn't you think they could develop equipment -- protective head gear -- to deal with this?

There is nothing to suspect in that case. He left a note that his brain was to be studied at the Boston University School of Medicine, where they are conducting research into chronic traumatic encephalopathy.

You can only do so much when you have guys flinging themselves at each other at full speed. In fact, I read somewhere fairly recently that the old leather helmets from back in the day absorb just about as much impact as the modern ones do.

Post-Concussive stuff is horrifying, but more common are the crippling bodily injuries some of these guys have to deal with the rest of their lives. It's like they age at twice the normal rate all the way around.

The perfect helmet would have to be very large and similar to styrofoam. It would also have to be slightly pointed almost like a conehead. Boy, the guys would look goofy though
