    No MOTU Minimates.

Okay, so Art Asylum's blog had a Q&A where they essentially said that they asked Mattel if they could do MOTU Minimates, and Mattel said no.

    http://www.artasylum.com/blog/2012/05/ask-dst-157/

Of course we don't know what went on in whatever kind of discussion was had, but it seems weird to me that Minimates is a no go, but "Kooky Kans" are a great idea.

Kooky Kans, which to my knowledge are sold nowhere, are not doing much to bring MOTU back in the public eye. Minimates are all over Toys R Us.

I hope Mattel saying no means that they're planning on releasing those mini masters soon, because otherwise I don't understand.

That really, really sucks. I've wanted MOTU/PoP Minimates ever since I first saw them. There have even been some customs made and they're amazing. I love Minimates. Darkspecter = heartbroken.

Oh no how terrible lol. Can't stand stupid little things like that. Shame for those who like them though and for the brand recognition and public exposure. As long as classics keeps going though, I don't care about much else.

Probably has to do with the Mini-Masters Mattel seem to be still be looking into. There's a lot of crossover there as far as appeal. Frankly, I'd rather have the Mini-Masters.

We could have stored them in our Kooky Kans.

I hope that does in fact mean good news for the Mini-MOTU. I'd be totally All-In for those. Totally.
Not to sound like a creepy cheerleader for Uki, but it's nice to know there is at least one person on this forum who is extremely positive & friendly all the time. I don't think I could be that nice even if you paid me. If we ever give out awards for "forum member of the month", Uki gets my vote. -Mr. Shokoti

Too bad Mattel put the kibosh on that. Marvel Minimates sold alongside Super Hero Squad, although Marvel is admitedly a much bigger property. Still, there's such a dearth of MOTU product right now, it's hard to see the two actually competing for the same dollars.

I love the Mini-Masters, but I was still hoping for Mini-mates, due to all the customising potential.

However if Mattel revea they are partnering with LEGO... then all is forgiven, ha ha!!!

I think Mattel won't license out actual toys of their products (think stactions) and they probably view Mini-mates as action figures. Knowing that that the Mini-Masters should be coming in the future also doesn't help as they would compete in the same class of figures. (well that or Art Asylum refused to lead the line with Mighty Spector so Scott told them to take a hike)

Although I do understand that any exposure for the brand through new merch is probably beneficial, I have to say that I'm personally glad. In my humble opinion as someone who is somewhat familiar with designer and platform toys, Minimates are lame.
No offense intended to the people who dig them, of which there is obviously a very large amount.
Those Mini Masters designs are really cool and have a great deal of style. Those, I like.

Bad idea. Minimates are very cool toys and the most visible is MOTUC, more earnings for MATTEL and better for the MOTU fans.

With Minimasters, we'll probably be lucky to get 8-10 figures. With Minimates, we'd probably get as broad of a spectrum of figures as MOTUC. Let's face it, Minimates are definitely the most popular and successful collector focused minifigures around.

See I'm the opposite. The vinyl/designer toys are usually a big pass for me, as the styles usually turn me off; the Hasbro Super Hero Squad figure style is a rare exception. The minimates are more my style.

Personally, I think the Minimasters and Minimates both suck. I know they're popular, but I don't understand the appeal outside of maybe Lego collectors or SD Anime fans.

But Mattel, I believe, is making a huge mistake in running with the Minimasters concept in place of Minimates (if that is indeed the case). Minimates are the undisputed leaders in this field and their cornucopia of licensed properties and widespread availability across different consumer markets is a testament to their skill in meeting collector scrutiny.

The Minimasters concept, even within the MOTU community, received mixed reception, meaning that these will probably be issued in a limited circulation at inflated prices with production errors common to limited release toy lines. (Hey, sounds kind of like MOTUC!)

Amen! The more I think of them...the more I want them all!
I may just be a Gay Pop fan...but I am also the one who wants ALL of the Figures, who wants this line to continue and who is putting my money where my mouth is....are you doing the same?

The MiniMasters are MUCH cooler than the Mighty Muggs. They were sculpted by the 4H and shown at SDCC. I think they look amazing.

    Absolutely.
Obviously, there's something that many many people love about Minimates. I just can't seem to connect with exactly what that is.

EDIT- Seeing what JonWes posted, I CAN tell you why I think those minimasters work- They take the theme of super-deformed designer-style figures and filter them through the core themes of original MOTU design. They're all in a battle-ready pose and still maintain that chunky aesthetic, standing nearly as wide as they are tall.

Well at the C2E2 Mini-Mates panel it was inferred that TRU has a big controlling interest in how Mini-Mates is sold. Mattel might not have wanted that albatross around its neck, being at a retailers whim can be a very dangerous way to move your product (see the death of the DCUC vs MOTUC 2 packs and many other failed business ventures over the past 20 years...MOTU 200x anyone?).

There often is a bigger picture we don't see when it comes to why licenses are denied or not given to a certain company.

I don't like Mini-Mates very much, but any brand extension for MOTU would be welcome just like the stuff from Icon Heroes and Funko is welcome. I would though like to see the Mini-Masters line hit retail and I think it would do quite well given the success of similar products by Hasbro

Minimates are not as great as they appear, without the Marvel license the company would be upon hard times. They struggle to find a retail outside of Toys R Us, comic shops are on the wane and they are finding it hard to be competitive. Just because you see them everywhere does not exactly mean they are a smashing success. The Marvel ones do great, almost all their other lines do poorly and Halo could not sell enough to justify vehicles according to TRU.

I got quite a few Mini-Mates from the Iron Man 2 line. I thought they were kind of fun at first, and I liked the little accessories and character selection. But they don't have much presence on the shelf for me. I just wasn't much of a fan of them after that, to be honest. It's the same with the Attitubes. The designs just didn't appeal to me enough to wade into another line. But the MiniMasters are just the right balance of the vinyl toy aesthetic and (as TrimmTrabb pointed out) they FEEL like MOTU still.

I'm a little bummed that there will not be any MOTU MiniMates as I'm a bit of a fan for the little figures. Not to mention I just want to see as much MOTU merch as possible. But if Mattel passed on MiniMates in favor of the Mini Master then I'm OK with it, I really like the Mini Masters. If Mattel is in fact making the MM I really want there to be females. I'm only interested in the line if I will get Evil Lyn, Teela, & She-ra at the very least.

Im really into Minimates, so its a shame, but not suprising.

The ONLY reason Im into minimates is because for odd toy franchises such as T2, Ghostbusters and BTTF, it lets you have EVERYONE and EVERYTHING at very affordable prices. We would have had a full vintage MOTU set in no time. Im more suprised there are no Thundercats minimates.

I wouldnt touch the mini masters with a 10 foot pole, they remind me personally of the super hero squad type stuff for kids. I already have highly detailed motuc, I dont need to rebuy them for no reason.

Well, development lead times and all that being what they are, I was kind of hoping they might get announced at SDCC. I know they've got a lot of other stuff going on this year, but they'd be cool for 2013.
