Picked up the last Swamp Thing issue and was surprised to see your name in there Val. Good job! But why didn't they let you do the whole issue? Did they think you would accidentally break the first nine pages?

Also... is there any way you can steal Gabriel Bautista's All Star Western gig? I'm just not feeling his work. Too subtle... not enough contrast.

that's how they split up the issue. I like what they are doing. If you have a team that is working, you don't break it up. But thank you for the kind words and the support! I really appreciate that.

These are all great pieces, Val. I haven't read much within the regular titles from DC or Marvel over the past few years, so I don't get to see a lot of your work over there. However, I've always enjoyed your stuff elsewhere. I really appreciate how well you seem to be able to adapt your method to the particular artist and story. The pages are extremely vibrant, but still the color never seems to overshadow the original art.

See now that is better. A Venom page with "Venom" in it and nicely colored as well

Oh and the reason I put his name in quotation marks is because to me Venom will only ever be the Symbiote plus Eddie Brock, I do not accept anyone else as Venom and I never will but out of all of the non-Venom's Flash has to be the worst because at least Scorpion kept the mouth full of fangs and the tongue whereas Flash looks so damn generic, hell he looks more like Snake Eyes from G.I. Joe then he does Venom

but then this thread is about the wonderful coloring skills of Val and not about my utter hatred of everything Marvel has been doing for the past few years especially when it comes to Spider-Man and Venom.
Take a look at my attempts at coloring

Wow, these all look incredible, didn't know that we had someone so talented as our Overlord.
Hey, if you want to wallow in the negative, go nuts. Sure, things aren’t absolutely perfect, and people passionate about a property can get all keyed up about things. But I don’t collect toys to be miserable. So I’d rather think about the things that do excite me

I'm not trying to change your mind, of course... but actually Flash does have the mouth full of fangs and tongue pretty regularly in the book. It comes out whenever the symbiote starts to take control. Which is pretty often. It's ending next month, but the series has been really good even after Remender and Moore left. I'll always prefer the Brock Venom of the 90s, but this was an interesting take and a well done story. To me, much more interesting than retreading and rehashing the old stuff.

Yeah, me too! Ed McG is one of my favorites. Love it.

Good work on all this stuff, Val. I enjoy your work, my man.

Slightly off topic, but I never got to ask you about this... is there a story behind why you stopped doing the colors for the Brubaker/Phillips books (Criminal, Incognito, Fatale) a while back? I noticed and thought it was odd and meant to ask you what happened there, but kept forgetting to bring it up.

Ed and Sean wanted to go in another direction. It was a bummer, but this sort of thing happens all the time in comics. Creative teams get changed up, shifted around, etc. I'd still love to work with Ed and Sean again. Those comics were a blast to color and they are both super talented creators.

That is a bummer... obviously you're still doing well and their book is still awesome... but a bummer.
What's odd is I think it was three or four issues in before I noticed the change.
I didn't really notice much of a difference in the colors. In fact, I had sort of assumed you got too busy and they had to replace you and the Dave was doing a pretty good job of matching your tone/style.

yeah, Dave really fit in well. That guy is super talented. He even told me "you're a tough act to follow." To get a compliment from Dave Stewart is awesome enough as it is. Plus, if I'm going to be replaced, it's hard to fuss if I'm being replaced by Dave.
