..those original swords are awesome!!!
That is all I know.![]()
I am curious about this as an avid MOTU buyer, and I want to make sure my stuff is authentic. However, some of the swords I have gotten recently from sellers are flimsy and oily plastic, which isn't what I remember from my childhood or compare to the original swords I DO have.
Has anyone seen or heard of this rip-off before? Again , I prefer all original parts and accessories.
Also, is there any way to tell a knock-off other than the look of it? (I'm guessing if it was re-cast from an original, it would STILL say Taiwan or whatever on the back of the sword).

I've never heard of (or seen) repro swords. I do see rubik's puzzle ripoffs to the point where it's hard to find real ones on Ebay.
I don't think there would be enough money in it for someone to manufacture repros of $5 swords. If you were going to
reproduce something, it would make more sense to choose something expensive (ie. scareglow's weapon).
The commemorative line produced in 2001 or whatever did come with repro weapons. But most of those seem to have stayed MOC.

... except for the unscrupulous Ebayers who try to pass off the carded figures as "original" to unwitting buyers.
I've opened a couple of the Commemorative Series figures, and the weapons are a little bit softer and they do seem to have a slight oily sheen to them. I'm guessing these may be the swords you're coming across.

There is indeed repro's of scare glows weapon. I have seen them side by side with originals. They look basically identical. Apparently the only real way to tell them apart is to weigh them haha. So I wouldn't doubt if people repro scare glows weapon that they would also do power swords. Complete He Man and Skeletor figures still fetch decent enough money.
Sure, but when somebody sells knockoffs of something in the modern era, it's usually pretty obvious.
For starters, they typically have them in large quantities. Somebody who is selling fake Nintendo plushes doesn't just have one plush, they typically have an army of them on Ebay.
Also, if it is profitable enough for one person to do it, you will usually find others doing it as well. It becomes a bit of an epidemic.
Most of the fakes on Ebay seem to come from Hong Kong.
That would be a bummer. Drop a hundred bucks or so on a carded figure and get a repro in the mail. Yikes![]()
