    DC Comics character coming out

I saw on the news that DC announced one of the iconic characters is coming out.

Any guesses on who is it going to be?

I saw the rumors a couple days ago on Bleeding Cool. It's kind of hard to imagine. They say it's a high profile character. With that build up, you don't think they'd wimp out and make it Matter Eater Lad or something. But I can't imagine them actually making it someone really huge like Batman, Superman, Aquaman, Green Lantern, etc. Even narrowing it down that way it seems wide open.

Yeah - I'd be really surprised if it was one of the big name characters. I saw an article that cited Twitter as having Aquaman or Wonder Woman as guessed by fans.

The article also said they were reintroducing the character - which makes me wonder if it's more along the lines of Captain Marvel (Shazam).

I'm interested to see how it'll play out. I remember the outcry when Marvel modeled the Ultimates Nick Fury after Samuel L Jackson. And that breathed new life into an otherwise stale character.

I think the question is: why is this thread in The Tar Swamp?

Do you mean this thread? If so, that's incorrect. We checked the mod record, and it hasn't moved.

    Good question.

I'm going to move it out into the Other Discussion forum. It should be fine out there as long as it doesn't get into the politics or religion behind it.

My bad - I thought Tar Swamp was for more mature conversations. If this is the more appropriate forum, thanks for the move.

I'll ask all participants to please respect each other's opinions and viewpoints - and to stay on topic.

Let's be honest though, the topic alone deals with an issue that some people accept while others don't.

The problem is that the moment ANY ONE disagrees with this it's just gonna snowball and *they* end up looking like an instigator.

I dunno, IMO with the rules of the board I just don't know how you can really have any sort of *legitimate* conversation with-out stepping on some one's toes for the most part.

There's things and opinions that I'd like to share, but I just don't have the floor in this environment to voice them.

So again, I just don't know where you can go with some thing like this other then the little jokes being thrown around, but even that can get dicey......

I think Wonder Woman would be too obvious as a marketing gimmick. Superman is bound to Lois Lane too much, I don't think they could make such a change to a part of American culture like that and get away with it. No doubt it'd be someone like a Green Lantern, a character that's had multiple faces over the years and one they could "change" without stepping on the status quo too much.

Batman. He and Robin have had many adventures over the years! I mean, seriously, everyone already suspects them. They're where "The Ambiguously Gay Duo" from Saturday Night Live came from.

given the reactions I've seen over the years...

My first thought is a page from the Batwoman playbook- someone new in the role, rather than retconning a character's sexuality. Kathy Kane's time as Batwoman was no longer in continuity when Kate was first introduced but I do think this sort of thing goes down smoother with a new face.

Or an existing gay character... I don't know if Terry Berg as Green Lantern will happen at this point- he hasn't shown up since the Sinestro Corps War.

And lastly, perhaps an existing character who has no dating history. Offhand, the best example I can think of is the original Anarky. I did get the impression his monthly book had a female character who would've eventually been some sort of love interest but of what's been published, the character certainly could pass for a closet case.

I don't know why but I could see some of the bad boys of DC-universe making good, believable gay characters - like Lex Luthor and Joker. Maybe it's because the way I see them both is that they have their own path in life that they follow and they both seem to be open and honest to themselves about what they want in life. Heroes on the other hand have lots of secrets and many hide their true identities from even people close to them.

Comics Cliffhanger as Unnamed DC Superhero to Come Out of Closet

    ABC News’ Jason Volack reports:

For the first time, a major comic book character won’t be ambiguously gay anymore.

DC Comics, whose portfolio includes such iconic characters as Batman and Robin, Superman, and Wonder Woman, plans next month to reintroduce one of its major superheroes as openly gay. Just not yet.

“One of the major iconic DC characters will reveal that he is gay in a storyline in June,” Courtney Simmons, DC Entertainment’s senior vice president of publicity, confirmed to ABC News.

So which one is it? The folks at DC Comics aren’t saying, but they do say it’s the latest effort to make sure their comics keep up with the times.

Last September, DC Comics relaunched its entire line of comic books to feature an updated look and a new lineup of LGBT superheroes: including Voodoo, an African American bisexual woman and Batwoman, an open lesbian.

Batwoman garnered DC comics an Outstanding Comic Book award from GLAAD, an advocacy and watchdog organization for LGBT issues.

“DC and (archrival) Marvel are recognizing that there is an LGBT audience that has been reading their comics for years,” said Matt Kane, associate director of entertainment and media for GLAAD. “When creating these fictional worlds it’s important to show the full diversity.”

Aside from making good business sense, Kane said younger readers are perfectly comfortable with gay characters and expect to see their peers represented.

Although DC’s Comics’ plan to plans to reintroduce a major character as gay is new, gay characters in comic books are not.

Marvel Comic’s Northstar was revealed to be in a gay relationship back in 2009. Archie Comics introduced a gay character in 2010, and there was a gay wedding in Riverdale in 2011.

Rumors are swirling that Northstar too is expected to tie the knot to his boyfriend Kyle.

“They are recognizing how the world is evolving,” said Kane.

Which one though? Tim Drake and Superboy have always had this intense Bromance that if you wanted to read into it, hinted at more. Damien Wayne reminds be of Stewie Griffin and he's just about at that age.

But my understanding is it's a character that hasn't yet appeared and they did confirm it's a male. I'm thinking maybe Ryan Choi but I honestly am not that familiar with that character, so I don't know if he's established as having a girlfriend already. Another one a lot of people suggest is Earth 2's Green Lantern.

Well, I don't know which character they might make gay. There have been speculations about most major comic characters for years. I mean, the whole dual identity thing could be seen as a metaphor for being in the closet, and a lot of superheroes fit that bill.
