The Wraith remake!!!

Peter Verhoeven(?) is coming to Finland at the end of this month to a sci-fi fest. If I have the chance I'll ask him what's his opinion about this remake. They're showing the original robocop in a theater and P. Verhoeven(?) will be at the screening. Can life get more awesome than that?

I always try to remain as open-minded as possible whenever remakes and reboots are concerned. Robocop is no exception. However, and I have to say this, I’m finding it really hard here. Every picture that has popped up so far has left me feeling empty. The suit looks beyond bland and generic, and now this.

When I first heard he’ll have his own motorcycle I was genuinely excited by the prospect. Like the suit pictures, though, this is just leaving me cold. I was expecting something more robotic, something that maybe he would have to “plug into”. This just looks like a motorcycle that looks a little more hi-tech than the norm.

Not impressed so far.

I doubt any major changes are afoot. They're already shooting the film and they have been for quite a while. Doing some more reading, the reason they've given is for more time to be devoted to visual effects.

A little bit out of topic, but....does anyone knows what is the year in the original RoboCop?
I always recall the arcade beginning with a prologue: "Detroit 1990..."; which is hilarious for me. In the same way as "Transformers: the Movie" is in 2005

This is a wee-bit off-topic but I thought this might fit into this thread:

Last night I had the awesome joy of seeing Robocop - Director's cut and Paul Verhoeven live at a movie theater (and his autograph on my Robo-DVD). He talked long about the movie and his movies in general and touched the subject of remakes too. If I interpreted what he said correctly he was not all that fond of the Total Recall remake and did not have high hopes for the Robocop re-make either. About Total Recall he said in an interview during his visit that they made it too serious and even though Colin Farrel is a good actor, the audience just did not come to care wether his character lives or dies.

About Robocop he said that when he was filming the movie he had so many visions he wanted to turn into reality but because of the very limited budget they had to choose locations that were doable with the budget at hand. In the end that influenced heavily on what the movie became like and he pondered that if he had had the chance to make his visions into reality, Robocop would not be the masterpiece it is. Having limitation forced them to use their imagination and use what was available.

I could see that being a challenge for today's movie-makers. With the current technology so much is doable and maybe it can sometimes turn against itself in making movies seem generic and to not stand out from one another. I do hope the Robo-remake is awesome, but last night I realized once again what a masterpiece the original one is. There's so much magic in it and such magic is not easily replicated.

This sounds like Superman Returns, Conan, Total Recall & Judge Dredd all over again. Not interested in these types of re-makes or whatever you want to call them ~ especially when most follow the same boring path i.e. darker overtones, direct-to-DVD type of feel, generic acting, sub-par plot, relying on CGI/Special Effects rather than what PV talked about above in Heidi's post.

Certainly not 'sour grapes' on my behalf and i certainly don't wanna judge it before we know more but this sounds like one i could skip unfortunately. I enjoyed the original and i think i'll stick with that one.

The new Dredd movie is not a remake of Stallone's Judge Dredd. It's actually the more comic accurate version of the character and tone of the series. It's also very well received by most who have seen it, despite it not performing at the box office.

I'll second that. The new Judge Dredd was a really good movie and I highly recommend it for anyone who likes futuristic cop movies. Urban is the character incarnate. Seriously, he never smiles.

Getting back to Robo, on the special edition unedited DVD, the really gory one, they show the early concept design for Robocop and he looks pretty damn close to Judge Dredd. It's a good thing they changed his design or Orion might have had a lawsuit on their hands.
