I'm going by the 90s versions, because that's the era I love.

    1)Storm
    2) Rogue
    3)Iceman
    4)Gambit
    5) Colossus

90s Rogue was AWESOME before they ruined her for the movies. I hate that they got rid of Ms. Marvel's powers. Her entire personality changed, and I don't care for the character in Evolution or Wolverine and the X-Men.

Honorable mentions to Cyclops, Jean & Wolverine. The entire 90s cast was awesome.

One of my least favorite X-Men is actually the Professor. His character always put me to sleep, and I liked it when he faded into the background. Again, I didn't like the prominent role he had in the movies.

I went with the mid-70s to mid-80s X-Men, which are my favorites. =)

Cyke, Wolverine, Kitty, Colossus, and Storm, in that order.

Phoenix Force impersonating Jean, Jean, Nightcrawler, Banshee, and Cannonball (though Sam wasn't officially an X-Man 'til after the 80s, he's my favorite of the New Mutants) round out my top ten.

    My top five:

    1) CYCLOPS - my absolute favorite. He's also one of my favorite Marvel characters in general. He's the first superhero I ever related to because of eye problems (ironically, for being Marvel's "every-man", I can't relate to Spidey at all).

    2) ICEMAN - I knew him from way back, watching Spidey and His Amazing Friends. Once I got into X-Men in '97 or there about, It was nice to see a character I already knew on the team (I didn't know he was an X-Man when watchin Spider-Friends as a kid).

    3) WOLVERINE - He's over-exposed, over-used and just generaly a camera hog. But when used right, he's a good character, and I do like him. Just wish he wouldn't always steal spot light from the others.

    4) ROGUE - She is a very interesting character. I like her spunk in the 90's series, but I also like her goth version in EVOLUTION. Her default power is really interesting, so it's nice that Marvel is doing more with it now that she no longer has the Ms. Marvel powers.

    5) SURGE - She's one of the many, newer characters. I don't really know all that much about her, but there is something about the character that really appeals to me. I find myself liking her for some reason.

Oh and, BTW, I'm not sure Phoenix Force Impersonating Jean exists anymore. I think it was retconed so that it was now Jean herself all the time.
Fictional characters are just that. Fictional. They have no personality or free will of their own.
Writers and editors mold them to their own wants and needs.
All we as the audience and fans can do is pick and choose our favorite interpretation and ignore the rest.

Very tough choice to narrow it down to 5. My response is also very heavily based on the cartoon and video games of the late 80s-early 90s era.

    1) Colossus
    2) Rogue
    3) Wolverine
    4) Gambit
    5) Cyclops

    Nightcrawler - loved his personality
    Wolverine - duh
Iceman - like his personality, but really dig his powers.
Emma Frost - I love the bad guys-turned-good. Plus..ya know..eye candy. And ultra self confident and strong willed. I always find that hot.
Psylock - kind of the same thing, but she was one of the very first Marvel Universe cards I ever got (before even buying comics), so there's a soft spot there.

    Honorable Mention:
Magneto - He's still a good guy for now, right? I totally geeked out when I heard he joined them, and I would have voted for him if he were on here. Same deal as Emma. Someone as brilliant, formidable, and charismatic as himself joining the good-guy's side is awesome. Hopefully it lasts a while before the inevitable pressing of the character reset button.

Angel: I chose Angel because he was an absolutely beautiful, well meaning mutant, who took the ultimate fall and later found redemption. The character of Angel went full circle. While I personally don't have am obsessive 'human with wings' fetish like some nerds (you know the type), but Angel stuck with me

Cyclops: Leader of the X-Men, simple but memorable power, and smoking hot. Scott Summers is the kind of straight laced soldier boy I think we all dream about. I loved the mid 90s X-Men comics that had Scott strutting his stuff. I enjoyed the more clever applications of his ability that smarter writers were able to bring to the table. Cyclops is the undisputed leader of the X-Men. Wolverine doesn't hold a candle to him in any alternate tale.

Nightcrawler: How could you not love this guy? Everything about Kurt from his powers to his personality come together perfectly. He is an awesome character. I absolutely loved every incarnation of this character. The generally happy-go-lucky original. The more vicious AOA version. The sheltered, repentful movie version.

White Queen: Emma Frost. She is one of the coolest psychic hotties in the Marvel universe. She is sexy, classy, and cool. Im not much for chicks in lingerie for the sake of t & A, but I accept with Emma, and I love it, although I do prefer her more conservative fashion choices.

Colossus: Big Ruskie. Steel skin. Super ripped. Hot. I never cared to invest much time into the character, it stopped at the visual for me. That was enough. I remember I loved his costume rework for Age of Apocalypse. I wanted my own Colossus as a bodyguard.

The pre-Mutant Massacre line up was my favorite so it crushed me when Shadowcat, Colossus and Nightcrawler were laid up. Aside from those 3 I also chose Wolverine and Rogue. For me honorable mentions would be

    Storm, Psylocke, and Longshot
