    Spoiler Tags

Spoiler Tags are great, don't get me wrong, but have you ever tried to have a conversation with them? Its terrible, you end up with a page full of Spoiler tags and people saying "In response to username" then yet another spoiler tag. Page 4 of the Prometheus thread is a good example of this, after that page a mod gave us the ok to not use spoiler tags anymore in that thread.

Two suggestions I would make are:
    1. If the thread is marked as a Spoiler thread in the title then Spoiler Tags don't have to be used in the thread.
    2. When using the 'reply with quote' feature it include the quoted Spoiler tags in the quote.

The first one is a simple change/clarification in rules, while the second one would probably require some site development.

Many thanks in advance for reading and your consideration.

    Matt.

The problem with leaving it in the quote is people don't remove it and then the spoiler is visible.
If folks are going to discuss spoiler info back and forth, sure, it's a little bit harder. But that's the fly in the ointment if ya want to discuss spoilers.

    Thanks for the reply Val.

I didn't mean make the spoiler visible in the quote, I meant leave the spoiler tags in the quote, like below

    Spoiler text
    "It's just a ride."

Mmmm.. it would require a bit of code that strips the spoiler when the Reply is posted. Currently it strips it when the Reply button is clicked. I'll talk to Adam. Maybe it's doable? but no promises! I'm not sure of the limitation in coding, etc.

Yeah like you say, it might very well be a limitation in the code but if doable I think it would be a worth while feature to introduce.
Thanks for looking into it mate

One thing to mention, for the record, is the question of the Newest Posts section - by which I mean that any text that's not tagged as a spoiler will show up in the feed for Newest Posts on the main forum page. So anyone who's being diligent about avoiding spoilers by staying away from certain threads, not clicking through, etc, could still have the topic spoiled for them by the Newest Posts.

I'm sure there's a happy medium, but I think for the time being we do need to keep tags in place, even in 'spoiler' threads. As bizarre as that can make a page to read, it's probably the most fair alternative, for the nonce.

To expand even further, there's an activity stream in each user's profile that not only shows what they've posted, but also what their friends have posted. Any spoilers without tags will show up there as well.

I didn't realize this so thanks for point that out dude. It looks like spoiler tags with in quotes is the best way to go then, so hopefully it will be doable

I find the spoiler tags to be incredibly annoying when they're in a thread marked "Spoilers". I just tried reading a thread where literally every post is hidden in a spoiler tag, so I basically gave up and came here to complain about it.
If I don't want spoilers, I don't read threads marked "spoilers". The title is enough to keep me from reading it.
Of course, people should have the courtesy to use the spoiler tag in threads that aren't marked 'spoiler', if they decide to talk about those special subjects, which is what the spoiler tags should be for. That 'activity stream' is a bit silly and I'd be glad to sacrifice it to get rid of spoiler tags. Just my two cents, lol.

    here's what i don't understand.

there's a comic book thread with spoilers in the title and we are asked to use spoiler tags

ok, i get that there's an activity stream and other ways that someone can see content w/o clicking in the thread. here's what i don't get...

there's another comic book thread* withOUT spoilers in the title and people are not using spoiler tags.

i just wish there was some consistency.

*actually, now that i think about it, i think there are two threads and they are about the same comic book. both have spoilers w/o spoiler tags (even though one is about the comic and the other is about a potential for that character to have another comic book).

if you are there, KNOWING it is a spoiler discussion, why are you making it harder for people to genuinely have a conversation.

Why would I want to have a conversation with a spoiler tag? I'd rather have a conversaton with a fellow org member. Gut to each his/her own. I'm not here to judge

And I think they show up unhidden in the e-mail when you subscribe to the thread.

I agree. Eighty-six the activity stream. That's the major reason for the need for extraneous spoiler tags.

Once something has been released in the US and the thread is marked with "SPOILERS" in its title, it is ok to post spoilers in a post without the tags.
