    Burst light electricity from TV?

We have an older, hand-me-down TV. It's from the late 90s and has never given us any problems. Recently, however, something very strange has happened.

A quick burst of light, accompanied by a loud "POP" has emanated from the TV a few minutes after turning it off. This has happened twice now, about a month apart. If it's happened before, I've never noticed it. What's odd is that the TV seems fine after this -- no whining, no static, nothing.

Any thoughts? Anyone else experience this before?

Possibly something is loose in there, but I really don't know TVs that well. It sure sounds like something may need some attention to me.

I thought that was a death rattle, Until you mention it was alright after the sound. Dave probably right, something is loose in the TV. I think you should check it out immediately or there will be a short circuit.

have you had power outages or used generators? These types of things can cause havoc with electronics . we lost a TV due to a generator.

On a related note for weird TV issues... 2 days after my grandfather died, we turned on my grandmothers new widescreen TV. The image looked like this

it only happened once for one hour or so, and never happened again... what could cause that?

not to hijack the thread, but this reminded me of that

I don't know if that's good advice, an unplugged tv carries enough charge to a kill a man. Be careful.

Problem is, it's going to cost more for a TV repair man to look at an older set than it'd cost to go and buy a new LCD TV. It's a matter of parts and labor. The CRT is a dinosaur now. I can no longer even find them new in stores around here.
