I think the gay thing was supposed to be more tongue in cheek but that didn't translate to the printed word well. Or that it was a possible outcome over time.
I just think they could have transitioned better. I think legacy style characters are a great way to reboot characters for newer audiences, without totally ruining the previous history of the universe. And when needed you can bring in the older character to appease older fans. Comics are in a huge rock and hard place right now with older readers and trying to get newer ones. Comics in this case mostly being superhero books.
