Actors you just can't like (and you dont know why)

There are some actors that when I see them in movies, I have this knee jerk reaction of rolling my eyes and thinking why did they have to cast this person? Sometimes I don't know why I don't like them. Typically if I do not enjoy an actor or actress, its because of their trashy personal lives (Lindsay Lohan, Paris Hilton), and how people who seem to like their films blindly obsess over them (Nick Cage, Edward Norton, Paris Hilton) or talk them up as if they are the best on the planet, and it seems like who they are becomes more important than their body of work. So its easy to dismiss them.

Take James Franco for instance. He is handsome, has an impressive resume of movies I've rather enjoyed, has won a few awards, and as far as trashy celebrity antics, is involved in none. In fact, the few things I know of him (going back to school after already having a successful movie career, teaching classes, being non combative about gay rumors, choosing gay roles without discrimination) he seems like a really down to earth guy. He was probably one of the better things about the Raimi Spider-Man films, and yet when I see him in a movie, I groan. I often feel like when he delivers a line, he does so in a monotone way that is just off, and his facial expressions often don't seem to match the level of intensity required in his performance. There is just something about him I don't get.

Edward Norton is another one. While I've enjoyed several films with him, I do not seek out films that he stars in, and really don't think he is that interesting or talented. He is just there taking up space in a role that any other actor could have filled. I have no reason to dislike him, but yet, I just can't enjoy him.

When I dislike something, I have a good reason (Paris Hilton), and in the case of these actors, I simply do not. So if you like/dislike James or Ed, discuss why and maybe I might change my tune and see the qualities you see. Maybe you disliked them until 1 role changed your mind.

Shia LaBeouf. I hate that guy. I think it's because no matter what I see him in, he's playing the exact same character, just in a different setting. Indiana Jones, Transformers, some Disney show he used to be on. Always the same annoying punk kid. If he showed some acting range, maybe I would give him a chance. Maybe.

I used to really like Kate Beckinsale, until I saw her in an interview. She came across as.. not very intelligent, and very boring. Perhaps I judge her unfairly, but I haven't been able to enjoy her work as much since. On the flip side, every time I see Alyson Hannigan do an interview, I love her more and more. That girl is awesome.

And I agree with Sky Breaker. There are some people (Paris Hilton) who have no reason to be in any spotlight.

Ryan Reynolds, Adam Sandler, and Jennifer Aniston. There is something about Ryan Reynolds that comes off as being fake to me. He tries to be to likeable and it doesn't work (plus he botched Green Lantern). Adam just isn't funny to me. All his movies and characters are pretty much the same and his comedy is predictable/lame. Jennifer Aniston is just plain annoying, her movies are horrible. It's like she is over the top with her sexuality. Since Angelina took Brad she wants to be naked and show everyone her fake body and man face. Angie will always be more beautiful and a better actress, give it up already.

Kristen Stewart. But I know why I don't like her. She is a lousy actress, and always look nauseous.

I realize I don't like matthew mcconaghey either nor Tom Cruise. Over the top usually equals overacting to me. They are oversold and they underdeliver to me. Funny...just saw Top Gun the other day, and I see Tom's appeal...then.

I have to agree with you on Reynolds, Sandler and Aniston. I feel the same way. Sandler is moronic, without being charming in the least. Reynolds is much more interesting off camera than he is on, but I still dont like him. Thankfully I've never seen an Aniston movie other than Office Space, and I never will.

I actually like Shia, but only because I think he is so awkwardly cute. However I will agree with you that he is severely type cast, and his characters are exactly the same. Let's not get into the debacle that was Bayformers. Awful films. Still, Shia is probably a very nice guy off screen. He does have a very charming, interesting story of what his family did to make money before he was famous.

Adam Sandler. His movies just look bad. Good musical skills but his acting is bad

    and

Rob Schneider. His movies looks bad. He was ok in Stallone's Judge Dredd

    and

Will Farrell. I can tolerate him in small doeses say say "semi pro" and "Talladega Nights" & "blades of glory" but eveything else it just looks like he's over doing it. i.e. overly campy.

I think the problem with Adam and Rob is just that they to hard to make a clean wholesome movie. I shouldn't be blaming them I should be blaming the plot of the movie.

You've never seen Leprechaun? It's not the greatest horror film but it is a cool cult classic. If you haven't seen it, it's worth a watch for Warwick Davis alone.

Shia better stop hanging around with Marilyn Manson before he reaches the point of no return!!

I've never been too impressed with Shia on screen, however, he does seem like a cool person in real life.

Kevin James gets that reaction from me. Fortunately he's never in movies I wanted to see in the first place.

Also Ashton Kutcher. The hell he's Steve Jobs!

I typically know why I don't like actors. For example people think I don't like comedies because I don't follow comedian the problem is most of them are very schtickish. For example Will Farrel at some point in a movie he is the star in is going to end up naked or just about and run around. He also tends to play characters who are really good at something despite the fact that a guy like Will Farrell would never be good at that particular thing, then some how has a falling out. Adam Sandler tends to play a jerk type character or one who has some kind of anger problem.

This isn't really something new though it's gone on for years, many comedians are actually funnier when they do their stand up bits but even that can be very routine.

The other issue is I have learned just not to follow someone's career. They aren't always going to make a movie you like, or you don't realize they may not have done a role as well as you think they did. Or the other end you start noticing they things they do that reminds you it's the actor and not the character.

Now there is also the other issue I have, and I will use Denzel Washington as the example of this. He is a capable actor, but man does he pick some boring roles. This was one of the reasons I did want to see the Book of Eli was because it didn't look like his typical generic movie. But again I know my problem with him.

OH my list could be very long...but I'll narrow it down

Adam Sandler. The only movie I have liked was the wedding singer. And I agree with Wyldman that he tends to play a jerk type of guy and its kinda annoying. I mean how many more bad movies can you make like that?

Jennifer Aniston Her only claim to fame is that she got dumped by Brad Pitt. Okay, so what. Who hasn't been dumped at one time or another? And why do people keep focusing on her life? She isn't a good actress. She isn't overly pretty. She is average.

Tiny Fay. She is like nail son a chalkboard to me. I can't stand that woman. I dont find her funny. I find her annoying. Just like that red haired comedian..chick who thinks she is funny but is insulting and whose name I can't think of but she is like a D celebrity.

Kathy Griffin. I sometimes wish I had more control over the things I did and didn't remember, she is one of them there is absolutely no reason for me to know her name yet your simple description I knew who you were talking about.

Amy Poehler hands down. No talent, not funny, cringe worthy.

Also not an actor but a dude I'd still like to punch in the face: Guy Fieri.

Scarlett Johansen. Joss Whedon was able to get a facial expression out of her in 'Avengers', but she was a better actress before the media declared her a 'great actress'. Now, she just seems like a zombie in her roles, and her portraying Natasha Romanov with that valley girl accent makes me dry heave. This category includes all the hot 'actresses' whose chests have more personality than they do.

Also, the small but loud minority of actors/actresses who jump on the political fad of the moment and start lecturing anyone foolish enough to listen about all the important things they think they know, because the played a scientist/doctor/lawyer/etc. in their last role, so that makes them an expert. They seem to forget they get payed to play make-believe for a living, and I have a hard time watching them in a role when I know they're a ******* in real life.

Not actors but other famous people:

Josh Koscheck, arrogant jerk. Can't stand him.

Ditto for Tito Ortiz. His book displayed what a disgusting life he's lead. Full of himself.

Mariah Carey also gets on my nerves. She comes off plastic and fake. I saw that terrible Christmas video she made with Justin Beiber where she's standing around like a Christmas dressed hooker and Bieber picks her up in his sleigh. The metaphor to prostitutes getting picked up disgusted me.

Forest Whittiker....he's a great actor but there is just something about him. I think it's the eyes. Also Uma Thurman and I have no good reason, just don't like her.

Any of the major Twilight actors. Anytime their cast in a movie it's predicated around getting the Twilight demographic. And they are all just awful actors.

Tom Cruise. Can be interesting, but most of the time plays the same self-fellating, smirking superman.

Brad Pitt. I liked Moneyball but he always seems to be fidgeting and sucking on things

Ashton Kutcher. Just bad, absolutely no redeeming value.

Nic Cage. Tries hard to be an actor, he jsut doesn't realise how bad he is at it.

Julia Roberts. I don't get the appeal.

Channing Tatum. Zero charisma or acting range.

    There's way too many list.

I'm in the "love Tina Fey and Kathy Griffin's" camp. But I also like Margaret Cho and Joan Rivers' earlier stuff.

I agree with Shia LaBeouf, Kristen Stewart, and Amy Poehler. With all the other ladies I love, you think Amy would be another I like... but nope. Doesn't make me laugh.

Will Farrell, Sara Silverman, and Tom Cruise.

I also usually really dislike Julia Roberts. I think the only movie I liked with her in it was Ocean's 11.

Sad to see all the Amy Poehler hate! I LOVE Parks & Recreation - one of my favorite shows that is still airing new episodes. I use to like Tina Fey but her show has gotten very stale. As for Kathy Griffin, her comedy is very specific (making fun of celebrities), so if you aren't in her niche I'd see why she wouldn't bring the laughs.

Shia LaBeouf is one of my favorite actors of all time so...

Brian Austin Green - I have an aversion to anything he's in. If I liked it before he became a part of it then I'll just stop tuning in. He's the only actor I have active disgust for and I feel a bit bad about it. However, it is what it is.

this is one of the reasons I try to stay out celebrities lives. I am not a fan of people using their celebrity to promote something unless it's subtle. I have known too many people who supported something only because a celebrity they liked did. It is good they are people and do support things and have beliefs etc, but it's a fine line they walk because anyone who supports a cause wants people to be aware of it but someone who truly supports the cause wants people who actually support that cause not a person who supports that cause.

That or you find out that the person is just doing it to come off as more likeable and doesn't really care when you really start digging.

I also think you Scarlett Johansen example is appropriate for many people on this list. The problem in the entertainment industry is when you break through the people who pay the artist say do it like you did when people started liking you. Then they end up with a problem like Jim Carrey or many other actors who try to break out of it and people were upset that they didn't do their normal thing. A good example of this is Stranger Than Fiction a great movie that stars Will Farrell but most people didn't like it because he wasn't playing his Will Farrell character so they didn't like it and his next movies were the same thing he had done before. But what ends up happening is people get tired of it and the actor becomes a has been because the executives and the entertainees didn't let them develop into a broader range.

And an actor I never got into that people seem to love and you are probably going to hear me say one of the harshest things I have ever said. Angelina Jolie looks like a blow up doll, and I never understood the appeal of her. She isn't bad in anything I have seen her in, but she isn't as great as people make her out to be either. I think it's a case of people are blinded by their attraction to her.

I agree with many of the ones above - especially Adam Sandler, Rob Schneider and Channing Tatum! But I truly cannot stand Seth Rogan, Reese Witherspoon (mostly because I know someone who worked for a popular daytime talk show who said that Reese and Julia Roberts were the biggest witches that she ever met!) and most of all - Zooey Deschanel. I just cannot stand that woman!!!
