    Directv dropping G4

Was watching AOTS on Thursday when Kevin made the special announcement about the failed negotiations between Directv and Comcast and that Directv was planning on removing G4 from their channel lineup starting on Monday, Nov. 1. I looked it up and, sure enough, it looks like this is for real and that this is going to happen. Kinda bummed me out. I mean, sure, G4 has only two shows I really watch and most of it's just reruns of shows the network picked up cheap and shows half the time, but still it's nice to know that it's there whenever the shows you like are on. I always like watching AOTS while eating dinner, kinda relaxes me and gets me ready for the evening.
Was wondering what all of you thought about this. Also, if this really does happen Monday, this'll be my first experience of a channel that I actually watch being taken off the lineup during a contract dispute with satellite companies. I can already tell, it stinks. Just wondering if anybody out there can help me shed a little light on the subject if it's happened in the past with a channel they like. How long do these contract disputes typically last? I read that Directv took off Versus for nine months, and now it's back on like nothing happened. Is that what's likely to happen with G4? It'll be off for a period of time, someone caves, and then everything'll be back to normal? Has there ever been a case where a channel's been permanently removed from a lineup because of a dispute? I kinda doubt it. I even hear that in a lot of cases a deal gets done last minute and nothing happens. Both sides try to make the other the villain to the public, but I'm guessing both really want to be in business with the other and that it's all a waiting game to see who blinks first and then everything'll be back to normal. I know I've got a lot of questions but, like I said, this is the first time this has happened with a channel that I actually watch. So, if anybody could comment and fill me in on what I should expect in the future I'd really appreciate it. Or if you'd like to comment on this in general, that'd be cool too. Thanks!

there is a lot of depends on. I know Dish network, dropped all Disney based HD channels a few months back. I don't remember the exact dispute but I understand the position of Dish.

As to full channels lots, we used to have Kung-fu channel and the related but they dropped them a few years ago. It was nice to see some of the older Kungfu movies etc, (monster etc were in the package) I was somewhat upset but I just shrugged my shoulders. I will say those channels had some really nice HD.

I know this was a DirecTV topic, but I had read somewhere that DishNetwork had some kind of lawsuit against Disney or ABC or something like that, which is why the HD programming got dropped. Can anyone elaborate on this any further?

Disney wanted extra money for their HD programming, Dishnetwork offers HD free (new subscribers).

Now the lawsuit, Disney sued Dish because they weren't paying Disney for these HD broadcasts.

Oh man this is one of the funniest things I've heard all year! The man in charge of G4 used to work for DirecTV, and now they're getting rid of his handiwork. Brilliant! I guess this is what happens when they change a network over to something that it just shouldn't be

I liked G4 better way back in the day when it was ZDTV (before it became TechTV even).

Looks like it was a smart move of Olivia Munn to take that job on the Daily Show.

Well, Day 1, and sure enough G4 was pulled from Directv's lineup. I find myself of conflicting emotions about this. On one hand, I'm with everyone on the whole "G4 only has two shows worth watching", you know the whole "Cops/Cheaters" argument. But still, I'll miss the two shows I did watch, at least for the time being. However long it takes for Directv and Comcast to stop playing their little game. I mean, the shows they have on there:

Ninja Warrior: Was cool the first few seasons you watched it, but then they did the same thing over and over and got kinda old.
International Sexy Ladies Show/That's Tough/shows like that: Whenever G4 had a show like this on, all I kept thinking was how they should be on Spike.
X-Play: Used to watch it all the time when it was strictly a review show, reviewing five games a show. They'd goof around all the time and make fun of the games. Then they switched the format and tried to be serious journalists about games, with interviews and cut the reviews to only two a show. As soon as they did that I stopped watching.
Web Soup: I liked this show. Just harmless fun.
Attack of the Show: Man, last week gave us a double whammy. First you heard about Olivia and Timberlake and that just cemented the feeling that she was just using AOTS as a stepping stone for her Hollywood career and she's turned herself into a human casting couch. Then, Kevin's announcement on Thursday. Still, watching AOTS was a daily thing for me and I'll miss it for the time being.

Like the channel or not, I keep hearing about how G4 has been growing so much in the last few years in the coveted young male demo. Trust me, Directv doesn't really want to lose that. And, growing or not, G4's still a fledgling network in the young stages of being in existance. Why do you think the kill all that time filling their schedule up with Cops and Cheaters and all those other shows the network picked up cheap? Because they just can't afford to make any original programming, not like they want to, only a scarce handful of those shows. They've already had to scale back on AOTS being on four days a week and X-Play a couple times a week. They don't want the ratings hit that not being on Directv would give them. That'd be a huge dent in their ratings. Both sides want the other in this and, no doubt, they'll come to some sort of an agreement. Only question is when. Anybody who says they're going to switch satellite carriers in protest over this is an idiot. Any thoughts?

I don't really care for G4 myself. It used to be good gaming stuff, but now it's almost like a merge between SpikeTV and geeks, but trendy geeks. Lots of annoying people, T&A girls hosting shows and so I can't take them seriously when they talk about games, and a flagship show that features a stripper pole as a centerpiece. Just not a station I can give any serious credit to anymore.

And I guess I realize it makes me sound bad, since my arguments revolve around not wanting hot chicks involved in geeky stuff (Hey, you all know I'm a curmudeon), but these girls (I don't even know their names) aren't just like "I'm a girl, but I'm doing this seriously and am into this." They're like, "I'm a girl! Look at my mammeries!" *wiggle* In fact, that has happened essentially... we've all seen the "So lifelike" gif float around But I ams what I am.

If I told you, and you didn’t know any better, you probably wouldn’t believe that station used to be the premiere station for gaming coverage. You’ll probably also wonder if they were a station for gaming coverage why do they only show reruns of Cops and Cheaters, as well as a few other international shows nobody cares about. Well, it’s a story that goes back a long time, but I have no problem telling you it. It’s a sad story with a very sad ending, but just like with Halo Reach, even though you know how it ends from the beginning, it’s still a story you want to hear.

That is most likely just them spinning very tiny numbers. Last year Attack of the Show only averaged 100,000 viewers, pretty low.

The channel really didn't have much of a focus these days. Directv will see no significant negative impact from dropping the channel.

    Can't believe they dropped G4.

I'm not "too cool" for it. It was a decent channel to flip on in between Tivo'd shows.

I DirectTV dropping G4 is doesn't seem much of a loss to me. I've never liked the channel much, initially because they dismantled TechTV to expand their market (though I do find it funny that one of the channel's last surviving video game shows, X-Play, is one of TechTV's former shows {though it's been modified}).

I did try and give some of G4's video game programming a chance, but when a reviewer regularly complained because you have to read in a video game (rather than listen to everything) it's kind of hard to take them seriously.

Not sure how that number is figured, but I would assume that's on average. I think AotS is a show that most people don't tune into every day. I would figure between youtube and the infrequent more once a week types the number of people who 'watch' the show is higher. Also the whole daily repeat thing might skew the numbers (like I said depending on how those numbers were obtained).

If Dishnetwork dropped g4 it would hardly effect my viewing, I typically only watch AotS when channel surfing or something is going to be on there I want to check out. For example I may check out their reviews on a product I am looking to pick up, but I file it under this is more of every person review. They aren't tech specialists, but they are definitely better then anonymous user 37's every person review. Granted in both situations money may have exchanged.

I wish companies like this (Dish, Directv etc) were putting out packages where I could choose the channels I got, but that is an aside nothing more.

I was reading an article about how one of the reasons Directv pulled G4 was that they were one of their lowest rated networks, even though G4 keeps talking about all the growth they've had over the years. The article went on to say that out of the 77 networks that the Nielsen ratings follows G4 ranked 60th, and in the coveted young male demographic, G4 ranked 47th. Not too impressive. They keep saying that G4 is the #1 podcasted network, and that's part of the problem. Some of their tech-savy viewers prefer to watch the two shows they care about on their computers or whatever instead of TV. In other words, they watch where Nielsen ratings can't be counted. That'll put a dent in your ratings everytime.
A part of me, the TechTV part, wants to see this as the first step to the demise of G4. Like a bug struggling to get out of the toilet bowl. You get sick pleasure watching it for awhile, but you inevidably flush. TheShadow, you posted something about how AOTS had 100,000 viewers. Where did you find that information? For that matter, does anybody out there know where you can look up G4's ratings on a consistent basis? I'd like to be able to see how this Directv thing impacts their ratings. Basically, I want a site where I can keep checking in to see this bug struggle in the bowl.

AOTS was getting less and less watchable , the jokes sucked and they cancelled Fridays show for reruns of that weeks show
and one bad thing was they killed X-play ,
now its time for someone else to step up to the challenge and do a real tech show / channel

Exactly, AnnnaMot. By now, everybody and their dog should have heard all the complaints from everyone calling for the old TechTV shows. I'm sure everyone in the industry has heard them too. Right now, now that G4 is vulnerable, is the time for Directv or someone else in the cable industry to harness the need for the old TechTV and create a new cable network exactly like it, with no SpikeTV shows on it whatsoever. Wall-to-wall tech, video games, comics, movies, etc. If that happened now, G4 would be a defunct channel in no time. Put them right out of business. Make it happen! Somebody. Anybody.

Bingo! Leo Laporte's TWIT podcast network gets 600,000 unique listeners and 4.6 million downloads each month so the G4 online content, in theory, could be doing very well.

You will have a hard time doing that. It was being reported back in 2009, but I haven't seen any information on G4 in quite some time. They may have stopped paying Nielsen to poll their numbers.

A week in May (2009) has G4 with an average of 125,000 viewers in prime time and a mere average of 78,000 viewers on an average complete day.

It would have been cool to see the original incarnation of the channel before the merger with all of those different video game related series.

I only discovered G4 within the past 2 or 3 years. My wife and I have had comcast digital cable since we moved in together a little over 5 years ago (prior to that, when I still lived with my parents, we only had basic cable with no digital box at the time, so I don't think we even got the original station back then). And it was a gradual process for me to "venture" into the higher numbered channels outside of the comfort zone of the same stations that I was getting back when I lived with my parents.

Honestly, I don't watch the channel itself all that much. I do check the On-Demand G4 content when the new stuff comes in each week, and if there is a preview, review, etc. of a game (or a few games) that I am interested in when the new content comes in, I will check it out. But rarely do I tune in to the actual station for the full programming. The only times I have done so was when they were having MOTUC reveals on the show. And I've maybe stopped on a show or two here or there if I happen to be flipping channels, but even then I rarely stay on the station.

Well I used to watch G4 a lot. Always watched AOTS. But since Olivia left. 1, I still don't know why they keep showing her. And 2, The show has been unwatchable since she has left. Kevin is boring without Olivia. It's actually a lot better show when they have Chris Hardwick or Blair Herter and Allison Haslip on it. As for the rest of the shows. Who needs to watch hours of Cops? The only show they have that's also great to watch is Ninja Warrior. But they only have new episodes after they air it in Japan.

If there's one show that need to be put to pasture, it has to be 'Cops'! The precursor to 'reality shows', and proof that Fox is still scared to try something new on Saturday nights.

I was never a fan of the original G4, most likely because I don't care about video games. ZDTV / TechTV, however, was fantastic.

Because of this thread, I was reminiscing and looked Leo LaPorte. I found his new podcasts and tons more on Twit.tv. Is that owned by G4? I haven't watched that channel since the merge. I used to watch several shows on TechTV. I miss them. Cat Schwartz was hot. Since I'm a loyal cable customer, DirectTV dropping them doesn't effect me at all.

I did find a show that sounds interesting on G4 that I just set up my DVR to record a couple episodes for me to check out. Has anyone watched "It's Effin' Science?" (God, I hope that's not edited vulgarity on the boards since that's the name of the show )
