The title is at the moment misleading, i am sorry, but i can only show the pencils for now, but i have to start somewhere, right?
This was inspired by my clicking through the cardbacks and i got stuck on Clawful, i always liked this one, and then i got the idea of painting this sequence in oil, and a story popped into my head of why Teela is holding the powersword. That in mind i picked a canvas, sadly not in that widescreen format, so i have a little bit above and below the original illustration to play with. I began with clawful, because i am very intelligent and drew him first, and of course so big, Teela would not fit on the canvas. So i used my eraser to make him vanish and i began with Teela. Much better, added some tree stuff and plant, and went on to draw clawfuls half. It is not that easy to have a nice drawing on canvas... but i hope you enjoy it, in the end it won't be visible anymore, so no hardcore rendering needed.
This canvas i will put in my sight, so i will be reminded everytime "there is one thing you need to finish"... well, i hope i can get to it sooner than later.
If it goes well, i surely will paint more.

Yeah, for now maybe. I will put some color on it in a few Minutes and hopefully don't turn it from a "Clawful Cardback" in an "Aweful Cardback
(damn, no Clawful smiley, BAAAEEEEENAAAAAAA! (sorry, my wrath of Khan moment))
I can't wait to see the finished project! Big Clawful fan here.

Cool, then i hope you won't be disappointed.
Now this is the color mood this thing will be set in. The goal is to achieve a Frazetta or old Boxart style, that is mainly why it is so dark. The paintings back then were pretty dark as well. And i put some background in there.
Let's start this painting. One or two photos might be uploaded tomorrow i guess. Depends of how horrible it may look (yeah i am a fountain of confidence).
Some steps and a detail view.
Looking good, man. I already dig the background detail.
Thank you very much!
Here is another step. 10 hours of work... looks like nothing. I corrected the horizontline, it was set to high, looking sharp at the original and saw my mistake. Water got a revamp too.
Let me know what you think.
A little more and i can finish the background today... and let it dry over night.
Thanks Jafari, it will be finished soon, well sooner than i thought i even start on this thing. Guess within the week.
Here are some Detailviews for you who are interested. Not finished stuff, but now that it is daylight and a little dry from resting over the night, The color breaks though and some stuff is visible that was not in a fresh wet/moist painted state.
And thanks to Jukka for pointing out the name of the original artist.
Hope you like it.
Coming up awesome, dude. Love the vintage feel you're giving to your painting.
Thanks, glad you like it.
Another little step, worked on the left sides foliage and the blue shine in the middle, oh and the trees, but they still need work.
At the moment i am happy how it turns out, hope i manage to keep it that way. The most difficult part is still to come, the water, ripples splashes and waves... because i want it to have action, or at least imply that the move, so the water needs action.
And the last two step photos of the day. The canvas is too wet in the part i want to work in.
Hope you like the progress.
Thanks, yeah i am looking too, because it takes longer than i hoped, but expected it. But i think by the end of the week it is finished.
Here is the latest from the day, photo taken tonight, i am curious to see how it looks tomorrow in daylight (the painting, not the photo ).
I call it Jungle Boogie, because it is sooo much green and purplelish stuff there...
Half way through i would say... but i could be wrong.
Still something to do on the shoreline and a bit behind Teela, or maybe i leave it ominous black/green.
Then the work on making those character pop in that scene. Will be interesting. More stuff is planned and some sketches are done.
Hope you like it.
After a few days, the plants are almost finished and i began painting Clawful.
Really liking the final look of the background, man. Well done!
Whoa... this looks GREAT!!!!! love the detailing too. Great job!

Thanks guys. Very pleased you like what i did so far. Now it is getting interesting for me, fleshing out the forms of the characters. Had to wait a few days for some parts to dry so i can work on it. Still a lot to do.
Another little update.
simply amazin', can't wait to see it finished... really like the detailing and the colors...
looking good. I was always a fan of the original artwork.
