Star Trek fan film (staring George Takei!)

    Hey guys,

I am currently working on a "classic" Star Trek fan film right now, that has George Takei in it playing Sulu! This is a film that was shot way back in 1986, but was never finished. The film is called "YORKTOWN: A TIME TO HEAL". Principal photography was about 85% completed on the film, but due to FX limitations in the 80s, the film was shelved and never finished. I am now working with the original producer of the film (Stan Woo) on finishing the project. I am currently serving as the supervising producer on the film.

Also on board with us is Andrew Probert (Star Trek, Back to the Future). Andrew designed the USS Enterprise for the TOS movies, as well as Picard's Enterprise for Star Trek: TNG. He is designing brand new ships for the film that have never been seen before in Star Trek. We have been filming new scenes to complete the film (such as new scenes with the Klingons), and new CGI FX for all of the starships (designed by Roland Baron.)

We are aiming to have the film finished for January of 2012. We are also discussing the possibility of doing an online "prequel comic" set a year before the film, so if any Star Trek fans at He-Man.org want to contribute on a fan comic, drop me a line!

Here are some pictures from the film, as well as some shots of Roland's CGI model of the USS Yorktown:

The USS Yorktown (CGI model: circa 2011)

James Shigeta (Admiral Nogura) on the Starbase 7 set.

    Klingon K-Fighter

Here is the plot summary for the film: "Having escaped capture by the Klingons, a damaged Starfleet reconnaissance probe crashes undetected on the planet Pahl III. Hikaru Sulu, serving as first officer on the retrofitted USS Yorktown, is sent by Admiral Nogura on a secret mission to help locate the missing spy drone. In order to prevent a catastrophic war from igniting with the Klingons, the USS Yorktown (under the command of Captain Bradley Frame) races against time to quickly find the lost drone, with orders to conceal its existence. At the same time, the clandestine terrorist group S.H.A.R.K. stumbles upon the derelict drone's location, with the intent of utilizing it for their own nefarious means."

Here are a few more pictures of the star ships designs done for the film. All ships were designed for the production by Andrew Probert.

Very cool indeed. How did you land such a gig? If you can tell us of course. A fan comic would be cool as well.
Currently taking commissions to pay my way to Power-Con. If you are interested PM me.

I read about the project way back in 1987 in issue #119 of Starlog. The article was about a bunch of young filmmakers who managed to get George Takei to act in their film. They also were able to get Andrew Probert to create new designs for the starships that appear in the film (Andrew is the man who redesigned the Enterprise for the original movies). Much of the filming was finished, but the FX were never finished, and the fan film was shelved for over 20 years.

I was very curious to discover what happened to the film. I went online to search, but couldn't find much info. I decided to start up a Facebook group, and began posting pictures of what I could find from the project. It wasn't long before people involved with the project started contacting me. I was able to track down Stan Woo (the producer), and we began to talk about finishing his film. I put together a team of film-makers from Toronto to finish filming the missing scenes, and recruited an FX specialist named Roland Baron to do the CGI work. Andrew Probert cam back onboard the project to help get it finished, and is polishing up his original designs for the CGI treatment.

To date, Roland has finished work on the openning FX shots (of the Yorktown being attacked), and we have filmed some Klingon "viewscreen" shots. The spaceship and planet FX work are on par with what you would see on an episode of Star Trek: Enterprise. We still need to film some "bridge" shots, and are debating weather we will do this with green screen, or on an a replica TOS bridge set in Las Vegas.

As for the prequel comic idea, I am currently working on some ideas. We were thinking that it might be cool to do a comic similar to the Filmation cartoon (which might be easier to do as a comic, due to the "stock shot" style of the Filmation cartoons). Or we might go with a more modern approach. We would end up posting the comic on the same site that the movie will be posted on, so it will get a lot of views. If any artists from He-Man.org are interested in helping out with putting together a fan-made comic, feel free to drop me a line.

The CGI model on first two pics looks AMAZING!
On third pic it looks bit too shiny... kinda giving it a plastic look.

Yeah, it's because he was attempting to have the green planet reflect light on the hull. I know he wasn't happiest with that one, and he is still working on the effect. Even so, I thought it was worth posting.

How would the fan comic be done? Would it be a prequel or a bunch of fan created short stories?

It would be a prequel comic leading up to the fan film. The comic will be called "A Time to Die." It would take place a year before the events of the film, and focus on a character named Lt Jeffrey Pond, who's girlfriend dies in a terrorist attack attack on the USS Yorktown. Part of the story would focus on their relationship. We see the aftermath of the attack on the Yorktown at the start of the film, when we see the ship drifting helplessly in space as the secondary hull explodes. The comic would lead up to the actual attack on the ship, and deal with the aftermath of the girlfriend's death, and Sulu's temporary transfer to the ship.

When would you want the comic done? I am kind of interested but have a lot on my plate at the moment.
