Thank you for this wonderful thread, Rockinhard! It's been a pleasure to read through.
Classics TGR figures should be Filmation-based, but they NEED MORE COWBELL!

BRAVO! Wow, what a countdown...That was quite a fun ride! It's just my luck that my work schedule kept me away from the home stretch but I'll finish up my thoughts on the final 16 soon. (I left off at Gygor!)

This topic was so much fun that I was also inspired to try out my own ranked list. I quickly found out that it's not an easy thing to do! MOTUC has so many cool figures and I came up with so many conflicts between childhood favorites and figures that were just incredibly well done. Of course, just as I finally had a 95% completed list, my computer went into an automatic update before I could save...Aargh!!

RockinHard, you deserve much praise for putting together this wonderful list and reminding us why we enjoy this collection so much. I definitely look forward to any new lists you make!

(Now, where'd I put those notes for Gygor?!)

Amazing countdown! Followed it from the beginning, checking in almost every day. I didn't comment simply b/c I'm new to the line and I've only opened a few figs. It's clear this thread was therapeutic for you, and it clearly had a positive impact on the forum as a whole. Pure awesomeness, thanks for the ride!

Ok, I promised myself that I'd catch up...

Gygor was one of the last beasts that I picked up. I just didn't know where he came from or where he belonged in the MOTU universe. I didn't think a giant yellow ape was something that I wanted to have in my collection but after seeing how nice the Shadow Beast was, I had a feeling that Gygor wouldn't disappoint. Like you said, the ferocious face sculpt is very well done and him ripping Vykron in half made him a lot more interesting, heheh!

Skeletor! What can you say about this guy? He's iconic and transcends MOTU as one of the best villains ever created. Even when the Evil Horde and the Snake Men came about, Skeletor was always the #1 bad guy to me. So many of my childhood toy battles involved him so it was only fitting that decades later, he would be the very first MOTUC figure that I bought. It felt nice to hold a packaged MOTU toy in my hands once again. This figure is a great update of his vintage design and I agree the new Havoc Staff is perfect. When I ripped him out of the plastic Despondos that had contained him, it was almost like being reunited with an old friend. Well, an evil friend that destroyed my WWE Arena, heheh!

Scareglow was one of my top wants as a kid. I was pretty much done with MOTU when he was released but I had one of those classic William George posters and Scareglow looked so neat in it. To this day, I have never seen this figure in person. So of course, he was one of those bucket list MOTUC figures that I had to have as soon as I started expanding my collection. Fortunately, I jumped on a great deal and I'm glad to have him. He looks so neat and I love how bright his glow-in-the-dark bones and weapons can get...Zodak's tattoos can barely be seen in comparison. At night, Scareglow is the last thing I see in my display area when the lights go out and it's great!

Kobra Khan was always a fun figure because he'd spit water on everything! I'd run around the house, spraying that venomous mist all over the place until he ran out and needed refilling. His MOTUC update looks great and I like the extra head they gave him. I don't mind that open-mouth look on him, it reminds me of his old action feature!

Ram Man is simply awesome! I had the old vintage toy and he never looked right; He didn't look like himself from either the cardback, mini-comics, or Filmation art. He could barely move and if the springs in his legs gave out, he was done. My poor Ram Man was eventually overrun by the Evil Warriors. This new version, however, looks like he can plow right through anybody! I love the bulkiness of him as well as the phenomenal sculpt and character in his face. If anything, the extra head isn't so great but only because there's no neck for it. Otherwise, I'm very happy to finally have the definitive Ram Man!

Trap Jaw is a must-have villain. He was one of the main figures that made me buy more than the Original Eight because the Evil Warriors didn't feel right without him. I like all the cool details and crazy-looking face. I also wish his extra accessories would clip on his belt a bit tighter, they always fall off when I move him around. It reminds me of how easily I lost all his vintage accessories, heheh!

I didn't know much about Bow until last year but I knew that he was She-Ra's companion so I had to get him. The way they tweaked his design is one of the best updates in the line. The only thing that bugs me is that his quiver of arrows always seems to get on his chin and looks like it's choking him. Other than that, he looks cool and I have him relaxing with the Great Rebellion ladies, sporting his Errol Flynn Filmation moustache!

Rattlor was another favorite childhood figure of mine and I'm glad to see this one as a near-perfect update of his vintage look. I like how they recreated his neat action feature with the neck extension and only wish his rattling was louder. He may seem plain to some without his 200X General armor but I was impressed with all the detail in his sculpt and paint deco. Fortunately, the armor will be coming along soon but I think I'll keep him in his original vintage glory!

I never had Fisto but remember having fun playing with a friend's whenever he'd bring his collection over. His action feature was simple but awesome; He punches you with a giant metal fist! Nothing fancy but it got the job done. Sadly, Fisto, Jitsu, and a few others would go back to their home at the end of the day and so, I only remember them as wandering warriors that rarely showed up. This new MOTUC version, though, blows away the vintage figure with all the detailed sculpting and extra accessories. There's a great, rugged quality to his face sculpt and I'm happy to see this wandering warrior finally come home to my collection!

Alright, I feel a little better now that I'm more caught up...Next up, the Top Ten!

The coolest aspect of this figure is that we can pretty much have a 200x version or a vintage version of Fisto in one. I stick to the vintage version, but the other is likewise very cool. The detailed armor, head sculpts, 200x sword, and the 200x belt are almost perfectly executed. Still, what makes Fisto, well, Fisto, is the figure’s fist – and that is my favorite part of the figure. If there is any critique of the figure to be made, it would be that the head (along with Jitsu’s) is a little on the narrow side. Nevertheless, Fisto is a fantastic figure.

    Fist-pump, baby!
I like Fisto, I just can't get past the flat silver ab / bare chest combo, and the holder for the sword I could care less about.

The updated face sculpt is magnificent. It’s one of the best updates in the line. The buck and tail are also well sculpted and painted (and I prefer this tail over the wobbly/jiggly vintage one). The extra head and 200x weapon, while cool, seem more like a waste because they don’t look right on the vintage design. And that vintage design is the way to go – it looks outstanding, causing Whiplash to maintain his “vintage” style while also evoking a more menacing, detailed figure.

    Whip it good!
Looks alright, I have really no interest in him.

Beast Man is a bit of an underrated figure. I remember having Stratos, He-Man, Skeletor at the beginning of the line and easily thinking Beast Man was the best of the four. The figure looks like it was lifted off the cardback; gone is that goofy-looking expression, now replaced with ferocity and some intimidating, detailed armor. The “beast buck” was first utilized here and is spot-on. THIS is Beast Man.

    Simply beastly.
    I love Beast Man's sculpt.

Catra is the single reason why I started to collect every figure in the MOTUC line. Until this figure was unveiled, I only wanted the vintage ones. But Catra was and is AWESOME. It has easily become one of my personal favorites in the line. The figure has a sexy-bad look, with or without mask, and is just an overall great sculpt. The accessories are in the wrong color, so mine sports the red Beast Man whip, which seems to fit much better. I love Catra.

    Meow, baby.
Catra looks really nice, almost passed on her, I watched reviews, and finally decided CM last year to pop on her.... now....

I still remain blown away by Man-at-Arms. I thought the vintage figure was a little boring and always wanted the mustached head. With this figure, we get the cardback head AND the mustached head, and both look great. The mace looks good, and the armor remains some of the most detailed armor in the line, with the genius inclusion of the arsenal holder on the back and weapons specifically for it pushes the figure into awesome territory.

    Bringing mustache back.
I like him, I prefer the Vintage colors, but I really prefer the Filmation look the most....

Most people probably wouldn’t place him in the top 10, but there is little doubt that some serious love went into this figure. So many newly and nicely sculpted parts, great paint job, two heads, removable missiles and jet pack, removeable/adjustable visor – this figure is fantastic and upgrades that vintage figure marvelously, seriously adding a lot to like and admire. The only misstep perhaps would be that the jet pack causes the figure to be a little top-heavy and makes Flipshot a bit hard to stand in certain poses, but otherwise, this figure is a knockout.

    Val K. goes into space!
No, interest in NA at all, but he does look decent.

Battle Cat has one of the best sculpts in the line. From the fierce head sculpt and amazingly detailed jaw/mouth to the bottom of the paws, Battle Cat is a marvel. The vintage Battle Cat was nothing more than a block of static plastic. Even as a child, the lack of articulation annoyed me, but now that is more than made up for: this Classics version is chock full of articulation. The hinged jaw just sends make it all the better, too. Though sometimes a standard figure’s weight while mounted on Battle Cat can make it give a little too much, it is nonetheless a triumph and is the definitive Battle Cat figure.

Now he's a ferocious fighting tiger!
I like BC, but when compared to the other figures, he's lower on my list.

Nothing like Granamyr has been produced in this line. This thing is awesome. It’s huge, it’s articulated, is a long-requested character finally come to fruition, pretty darn good sculpt (particularly the face/head) and is just plain bad-ass. Though there have been some reports of quality control issues, there are no problems/issues with mine. I can even get mine to stand. It is a fantastic, awe-inducing figure.

    Grumpy old dragon?
I love Granamyr, great sculpt, and mine had no issues going together, or coming back apart.

The figure basically set the standard for the females in the line, and the figure’s face sculpt/paint job remains one of the best alongside Catra, Adora, and Netossa. What really makes this figure special aside from having two heads, the staff, the sword, and shield is the details and overall update. This is the version of Teela I always wanted as a child and now adult. The vintage version looks almost silly with the lack of details and its facial expression, while the 200x version just got the essence of Teela wrong (making her an overly-detailed teenager). This version shows Teela as mature, warrior-like, and a little on the sexy side. It’s a cross between FILMation, the cardback art, and the vintage figure, taking the best elements from all three. Though her waist is difficult to move articulation-wise, it’s of little consequence when the figure is one of the best updates of the line. I love the figure.

    Warrior, Goddess, Oh yeah!
Beautiful figure....and a great toy too , although I had to add some back to her, by heating her skirt up, and fluffing it, now she's the total package. My favorite Female too.

This thing is perfect. Yes, perfect. No stickers, has amazing details, utilizes working action features, includes an awesome rotating stand, and the figures (aside from caped figures) fit easily in the cockpit. It is without question that time and love when into the sculpt of this, and that includes the amazing, beautiful boxart as well. It’s hard to grasp how much care went into creating this vehicle until holding and actually studying and gazing over it. It absolutely baffles me when fans say they don’t want or collect vehicles when we are given something so amazing and essential to the line as this. I hope we at least get a Battle Ram, which is the most essential in most minds, so that we can have at least two vehicles and some Sky Sleds instead of just one lonely vehicle, but I’m sure many of us would never object to a Horsemen-sculpted Roton, Landshark, Talon Fighter, Attak Trak, Road Ripper, or Dragon Walker. Never.

    The coolest soaring bucket ever!
It's OK, but I have no interest in it, I want Attack Trak.

My favorite figure as a child, my favorite figure now, Mer-Man literally looks like it was pulled off the classic cardback of the vintage toy. I always wondered over and over why Mattel made the “cat-head” version of Mer-Man over what was seen in the cartoon, or even better, on back of that vintage toy package. The Four Horsemen did right, and we finally have that cardback version, the one I and many wanted as a child, which is a dream come true. And man, does it look awesome. That head sculpt with that extra neck sculpting to look like gills just makes it all the more perfect. The armor and both the corn-cob sword and the trident are excellently sculpted and detailed. Meanwhile, we also have the option to pop on the vintage head for a quasi-vintage figure. I also can’t help but to mention the cool and welcome Toys R Us variant in blue, utilizing the same sculpt but in mini-comic colors and a two-tone sword, even if it does fall short of the awesomeness and long-sought after cardback version. Mer-Man is my favorite character, and definitely my favorite MOTUC figure.

Not a better water-sucker in the galaxy.
Mer-Man is OK, I don't like the 3 fingered hands, or the fact he's waving HI! all the time. And I'd prefer a Filmation head to either one we got....but I still like him.

Great work. I also love all the photos... AND: Mer Man was also the figure that sucked me in the classics line.
I knew I had to buy my favorites (Scare Glow, Trap Jaw and Skeletor), but as you said - this figure looks like it stepped out of the vintage artwork and finally looks like it always should have and I couldn`t resist... now I got a huge collection of Masters Figures... again (I sold my nearly complete vintage collection 5 years ago)...

what about such a great (really great) thread about vintage figures? I would love it

Thanks, and ha, I'd actually have to own the vintage figures. I sold mine off years ago. Classics is the only toy line I own/collect. That's plenty.

I know this thread lead me to buy a few great looking figures I didn't even know existed before (BG Evil Lyn for one, and now I want a Webstor), so I thought maybe this might be useful to others.

Excellent thread RockinHard! No one will agree with every placement, but you captured a lot of sentiments here. I was glad to see my homeboy Mer-Man at #1 backed up by the flawless, over the top, epic Wind Raider. Took me right back to my earliest memories of MOTU reading Battle in the Clouds!

Teela is almost perfect, just lacking a bit of articulation. I would definitely have put Mer-Man as my number one as well. I think he was just flawlessly executed, with the card back face, the armor with the details and shading, nice muscle shading, great updated "corn sword", etc. Fantastic that you can use either the vintage cat head or the card back head (I always use the card back head). I have the TRU version as well. I had to have both, despite having a small collection.

He's my favorite figure, though not my favorite character, if you know what I mean. For figures I put him at number one. For characters, in the top five, anyway.

    Nicely done, RH.
Just got Ram Man. I'm going to have to say now that Ram Man is my number one favorite figure, with Mer-Man at #2. Ram Man is a tour de force of awesome (and one of the only original second wave designs that I like without reservation).

I'm glad they went with toy colors, too. I think they work better than the original card back colors in this case.
    By the ancients!!!

. . . and Strobo! Just wait until the next one, He-Dad. I may outdo myself on that one. It'll be a while, though.

MOTUC Most Wanted: Skeletor's Robot Knights, Two-Bad, Horde Troopers, Modulok, Sssqueeze, Tung Lashor, Stridor, Night Stalker, the Battle Ram, and a true, alternate head for Wun-Dar (since he's a "different" character)!

HAHAHA Yes!! Mer-Man #1!! Love it!!
He's my #1 as well.... really LOVE the new head, and yes we FINALLY get the Mer-Man shown to us 30 years ago on the card back! That was by biggest dissapointment with MOTU as a kid, was that he did not have the same head shown on the card back. Great fig! Great countdown!
