MASSIVE fertilizer factory explosion in Texas

    http://www.cnn.com/2013/04/18/us/tex...ion/index.html

A few are confirmed dead, but it's expected as many as 70 fatalities. Many homes in the area were destroyed and more were evacuated due to possible risk.

We had a terrorist attack in Boston Monday, yesterday government officials started receiving envelopes laced with Ricin, and tonight a factory explodes causing severe casualties and property damage. It's enough to make someone wonder, and I bet the government and law enforcement will be investigating this factory with a fine-tooth comb to determine if it was an accident, or intentional.

From what I heard on the radio they suspect it was an accident.

Time will tell. In way, I hope that's all it was, because the thought of this being related is scary.

It's a fertilizer plant, and much of the fertilizer that is made is from manure. Manure produces methane, and as we all know from science, methane is highly flammable. I'm betting it was a stupid mistake, something along the lines of a spark or the like.

I'm aware of how many flammable chemicals can be in such a plant, I used to work at one that had enough chemicals stored on hand that a similar accident would probably take out much of Cincinnati. Accident or intentional it's still a massive disaster. The shockwave destroyed houses and there's risks of igniting underground gas mains.

Fertilizer is highly explosive, and accidents are easy enough to have with it but it does make one wonder...

Oh i get that. Like I said, I hope it was an accident, just considering how close it has happened to certain other events...

I would say it was an accident. I heard something about volunteer fire fighters fighting a blaze then had to retreat because of the imminent blast.

It was most likely an accident. Were it an act of terror, the timing would have likely been much different. Setting it off several hours earlier would have meant that children would have been in the nearby school, and I can't see a terrorist passing on that kind of sick opportunity.

Regardless, the blast radius looked like it took out about a third of the town. I certainly hope nothing else gets ignited as some fear could happen.

According to the news, the plant was fined last summer for some pretty serious safety violations... so there you go.

Yeah, fertilizer is some dangerous volatile stuff, terrorist involvement or not. There could easily be plenty spread around by the explosion itself. It certainly qualifies as a major disaster, but at least not the product of a deranged mind in this case. Hopefully nothing else will go up, but with an explosion that big you never know. I am certainly concerned both for residents and emergency workers, to say nothing of the jobs that will be lost.

They're saying the last time this place had an OSHA inspection was in 1985. 1985?! I'm surprised it took this long to explode.

I guess seismologists are saying it was like a magnitude 2 earthquake! Hope you and your family are all right, because it also released some nasty poisonous gas and even that far away may not be totally safe. This reminds me a bit of a massive warehouse explosion that occurred here in Kansas City about twenty years ago. They are still cleaning up from that.
