Is everybody really certain that it's the same butt-stamp on all of the original figures, as well as the later figures? I'm having a hard time believing it.

This thread is more than 60 pages long... I think it's not an incredibly out of the blue question to see a "memory-refreshing" post on how you spot one.

Using keywords with a thread Search will find it.
Like "identify" or "custom" or similar keywords... search by posts... that info will turn up.
That's the point of the Search feature.
    It's very versatile.

    Please use it, folks!
Let's respect the discussion and posts made before hand.
There's lot of great info already here.

Well I'm not trying to be jerk at all. But there's a big difference between the paint job on a custom and an original. Look at the hair line. I would think youd be able to tell around there. And also by the jonts.

this is how i identify it:

    1. brown hair is, in a way, sort of green? pherhaps like rio blast's brown
    2. brown hair is lighther than shorts
    3. black belt and boots are not completely shiny

    See:

    CUSTOM:

    ORIGINAL:

I think the difference is eye popping right?

Great answer, however I think he/she was asking how to tell the difference between a knock off savage/wb he-man and a real savage/wb not the difference in he-man to wb/savage h-man.

Usually with the customs I have seen if you check the inside of the crotch section it will be the original color if its a custom as they seem to be cast in the color they are. A painted one will be different on the inside as opposed to the outside. If you are still unsure you could scratch the bottom of the boot to make sure it was not painted also. Hope that helps.

You'd think after all this time we'd have this done and over with lol. When I started this thread all these years ago I thought I'd have an answer within a couple weeks but, this discussion has been going on for YEARS! now and we have no answer, I hope we get it soon. My gram is expectin her new books of Mattel toys soon, I will give you the info as soon as I talk to her. I'm taking a trip this weekend for her to see my son and daughter so, I will let you know what she has found then
Who would win in a fight between He-Man and Wonderbread He-Man?

I'm surprised that no one yet has tried to "fake" the solution about Savage He-Man in a convincing manner. I mean, let's say somebody shows a mail-in box or the mentioned cardback for the figure and pretends it to be the real deal - how could we know that it ain't a custom?

Precisely, but more to the point; if we can identify the characteristics of Savage He-Man, then we can determine a window of production, thus narrowing down our search.

Does anyone in any of your towns have a WonderBread/Hostess store?I do in my town,I'll go there and talk to anyone thats been working there for 20+years if any(doubt it though, but wishful thinking at best)and have them read the Toyfare article and see if they have any records of the promotion from the days of way back.Who knows, maybe they still might have something tucked away somewhere.Wish me luck.

What a great figure. I wont bother you guys with my childhood-love-for-"Mail-Away"-He-Man story, though I will put my two cents in with hopes of just adding a little more info. I DO remember this figure as a child. A friend of mine brought it to kindergarten class and we played with it for months. I have no idea what weapons it came with, as he had it dressed as a "right color" Faker, with the orange armor and sword, tossing the blue one out I guess. This is funny now, 'cause it never occurred to us that Faker didn't wear Skeletor's armor either, but we were kids, whatever, he had to be EVIL. My point is I guess, I at least have a time frame for this figure being purchased/given to Barry (my friend). The year was 1985, and we were also playing with Centurion figures, though I don't know if that show was airing yet. And the figure was brand new. He was into M.A.S.K. at the time and really only got He-Man figures because I liked them, so I don't think we would have had it hidden and just pulled it out one day, especially sense he bragged about it sooo much. So anyway, there you have it.

Also, I think it would be a neat idea to collect/give detailed pictures of the figure, so others can collectively study them. I myself have noticed his sharp sculpt, but I have a few early He-Man figures with sharper sculpts, also I noticed my WBHM has a belly button, and none of my reg He-Mans do, though I have a Man-At-Arms (as an early figure example) with the belly button. I just don't own enough figures to get into detailed comparisons like that. A few friends got together and noticed that both soft and hard headed Man-At-Arms come with and without the belly button, does anybody know if that can give any info about the manufacturer? Anyways, THANKS for your time guys! Please feel free to ask for pics of ANY figure. I'd love to help out. Here are some pics.

    cheers!
    Stephen

If they made an official origin for WB HM , what would it be ?

Would he be just another evil clone , like Faker or would he be a good guy ?

    Powerless He-Man

Maybe this is just the version of He-Man that was handed his but by Mer-Man when he ganked his strength armor in "Battle in the Clouds." Well, that's what's in my head and you can't take it out.

Try to squeeze some meaning out of that

    Jawbridge,
Where'd you get that image? I checked in the mini-comic "Battle in the Clouds" and that image doesn't exist. There is one similar with Mer-Man holding a boulder over He-Man's head and another one holding his chest armor but in both images He-Man has blond hair and maroon trunks and boots.

Nice observation.... I have four other He-Man versions (Taiwan '81 & '82, Mexico '81, Malaysia '81) None of them have belly buttons but my WB He-Man does.

I posted a difference in pelvic molds a while back as well:

    Original He-Man

    WB He-Man
    http://i141.photobucket.com/albums/r...d/DSC02710.jpg

If you look closely you can notice quite a difference in the detailing of the mold.

hahahaha, the comic picture was meant as a joke, sorry, yes so are the boots, very fake
The earlier comics were long since ignored by the time this variant supposedly came out, but if he needs a place in the bigger picture, why not. Sorry for the confusion friend.

Here is the crotch of my Powerless He-Man, doesn't seem to match yours, hope mine's not a fake , I'm always convinced that these are though, so...
