    Long Halloween
    Dark victory
    Hush
    Year 1
    Year 100
    Death in the family
    Dark knight returns
    Robin hero reborn

The Knightfall and No Man's Land sagas are hugely important, continuity-wise, and make for great stories. Arkham Asylum: A Serious House is a classic, as is Killing Joke, as BJH mentioned.

If you're interested in Elseworlds stories, Gotham by Gaslight and Thrillkiller are both pretty neat.

    Yes

I do NOT like Batman at all, one of my least fave characters in comicdom

But I would say Court of Owls is a must read

i don't have many batbooks, but i like most of the ones i own. in addition to some of the ones already listed, i'll add:

bruce wayne: murderer? / bruce wayne: fugitive - bruce wayne is accused of killing a lady friend. he breaks out of prison, decides to become batman 24/7, and looks for the real killer.

war drums / war games / war crimes - a large gang war breaks out, while stephanie brown, aka the spoiler, becomes the newest robin.

robin: year one / batgirl: year one - unrelated stories, but by the same team. these are a lot more light-hearted than your batman: year one or the long halloween or any other retelling of batman's early days.

Hush is amazing... maybe my favorite. Killing Joke is a lil disturbing!

by "Court of Owls" I do actually mean both "The Court of Owls" and "City of Owls" trades as it is a complete story. (unless of course there is a collection which has ALL of them in which case you should get that)
