This is an....interesting...bit of news. I'm trying not to rush to judgment - I agree with SCB that Affleck has more than proven his creative chops, but he's never been a very solid on-screen performer, IMO. He's passable, but this does seem like '90s casting logic more than anything.

That said - I've liked the last few Batman/Superman decisions WB has made, so we'll see how it goes. It's foolish to over-react right now, based on the announcement. However, it's just not a choice that fills me with a lot of excitement.

While I will always wait and see, I agree he can pull off Wayne but not really Batman. Most roles I have seen in him if not all he is always a second away from cracking a smile and when Batman your jaw line is very important. This was my problem with him as Daredevil, every time he said something serious in the costume I thought he was going to break into a smile and say just messing with you.

ANYONE could have followed Heath Ledgers joker. Terribly boring iteration of that character IMHO. and if he hadn't died, would people have cared about it so much? Joker done right for it's time is Cesar Romero, and Mark Hamil...

I feel pretty much the same.
I see Ben Affleck as an actor in the same way I see Keanue Reeves; their movies are entertaining but I never found their performances solid. I liked his Daredevil (more than the 1st Spider-Man at the time), but Batman is a whole different animal.
It is pretty much the same kind of casting call as Ryan Reynolds as Green Lantern.

Probably Ryan Gosling would have suited as a better (longer term) choice; but it seems that they want to go with the "Dark Knight Returns" route with a more mature Batman. Also, it seems that WB wants to match Affleck's well known name and certain star power as when Robert Downey Jr was cast for Iron Man.

I think this is good. I admire Affleck as an actor. Physically, too, I think he’s (almost) perfect. Also, he’s a bloody good director himself, so hopefully this means he’ll one day be directing either a solo Batman film or the Justice League movie. I hope they finally give Batman more of a grey costume. I think it’s about time.

Also, this all but ensures a thriving DC cinematic universe. I mean, this film alone will make at least a billion. Fun times are ahead.

I'd like to keep my hopes high and Affleck turns out to be a great Batman as Daniel Craig turned up to be an excellent James Bond

There is a better chance Val gets cast as Wonder Woman than that petition doing anything...

Hmmm. I am not a fan of Affleck, nor am I a fan of this casting call. Time will tell.

Im not a fan of this casting choice. I like Ben Affleck as an actor and I even enjoyed Daredevil (Unrated/R rated version) but as Batman I think he'll just be another Clooney in the suit.

Wow, I didn't see this coming. I didn't think Affleck was looking to play another comic book character, particularly now that he was getting more acclaim for directing. Even more surprised that there were no rumors (that I could see) about this either. I'm now most interested in seeing who plays Lex Luthor. I'd really love it if they got Brian Cranston. Is it wrong that I still want Mark Strong to return as Sinestro (the ONLY thing to return from the GL movie)?

So...will Affleck be the first actor to be both "Superman" and Batman? He played George Reeves playing Superman in Hollywoodland several years back (with Ma Kent herself Diane Lane and possibly shoe-in for the Joker Adrian Brody). He at least wore the Superman costume anyway.

poor shredder, still alone on this, huh?

just messnig with you.. and just in case you didn't know.. the buzz on ledgers performance was also out before he died. true when he died was even more.. but seriously his performance was just incredible.

are you just stuck in the campy times of the joker?

as for the ben being cast as the new batman.. i was at a SAY WHAT? but with the bad buzz on him now with geek mania, guess we'll have to wait and see.

btw.. when that Frasier actor was cast for X-3 beast .. i was soooo... but then i saw his performance and he was great.. maybe too because i didn't see his face at all?! but i liked him as beast

I KIND of agree with him.. I think Ledger did a fine job... for THAT interpretation of Joker... but I don't see it as the Be ALL and END All version. Same with Mark Hamill. They were both good with their interpretation... but honestly... I LIKE a campy joker. I though Jack Nicholson was FANTASTIC in that role. He's still my favorite version. Scary... sadistic and really just plain off his rocker. at any given time you don't know if he's gonna hand you a gun, or shoot you in the face... whatever he fits his whim at the moment.

Modern jokers are just... plain.. evil. They aren't that 'crazy' anymore. And a joker who isn't crazy just isn't the joker for me...

I was actually the opposite when it was announced. I knew makeup and CGI were going to be doing the lion share of that role ANYway... and honestly, Frasier spouting off shakespear, philosophy and $5 words just seemed PERFECT to me. And His performance was my favorite thing about that show

Completely disagree. Romero is a freaking joke. Hamil was not that great in the original series. Not because his voice did not fit, but because he was too tamed. It was not until I heard his performance in the Batman Beyond movie and then in the Arkham games that I actually liked him as Joker. I personally though John Dimmagio in Under the Red Hood and the guy who did it in The Dark Knight Returns were better Jokers.

ANd Ledger's Joker is pure gold. It does not matter if he died or not, he was finally Joker down right in live action form.
Can someone PM me the US number for Matty? I want to talk to someone who might has a clue of what is going on.

I think Ben Affleck will look like Ben Affleck dressed up as Batman and not Batman himself. That's the reason why they didn't use someone like Robert Redford in Superman, the movie.

To be fair most od the previous batman actors have been well known actors. That is nothing new. What is weird for me is pairing up that casting of batman with the current superman who isnt as well known an actor. It makes superman feel lesser somehow then or mismatched.

amusingly, it's not that ben affleck is being cast as batman that should worry people. guy is a long time closet comic book nerd, and a batman fan in particular.

what should worry people is that David Goyer is still involved.
