My 2013 State Fair Vegetable entries

I started this thread for my 2013 State Fair vegetable entries because I know several of you like to keep up with entries and results each year. Weather played a big factor in the number of categories I entered, which is down from previous years due to sporadic weather changes.

Well, I entered my veggies in 17 categories today and will find out the results on Thursday, August 15th. I will keep updating this thread with new info and pictures, so be sure to check back often.

Below is a full list of what I entered this year as well as 10 pictures (since that is the limit).

    ~Best Collection of Vegetables

    ~Best Collection of Beans

    ~Green Beans, Flat type

    ~Wax Beans

    ~Lima Beans

~Best of 3 Types of Beans

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------

Wow!! I'd buy all of that!!

Those green peppers look really REALLY good.

I wonder if the radiation from the Japanese nuclear plant has had an affect on the weather this year. It has been unusual all over the continent . There have been a few articles about that.

Thanks Rep. Indeed we have had lots of good dinners (i.e. stuffed peppers, vegetable stir-fry, ratatouille, etc.).

Thanks! Red Okra tastes just like green okra. It's just a different color.

    Thanks for the best wishes!

I grew up on a large fruit and vegetable farm that supplied fresh produce to Kroger and IGA as well as going to 3 farmer's markets on a weekly basis. I might not know a lot or have many talents, but I do know hot to grow things. So, feel free to PM me anytime. I would be more than happy to help.

Those are good-looking. Most of my vegetables haven't produced much. Lots of rain, late planting, rotten little squirrels and lack of honeybees have all conspired to keep me vegetable-less despite all the work I did on the garden.

    STATE FAIR RESULTS:

Let me start by saying that I didn't have as good a year in the garden as I had hoped due to some crazy weather and lack of motivation. I had even made up my mind several months ago to NOT enter the state fair this year, but I changed my mind just 1 week ago. With that said, I earned 9 ribbons in the Fruit/Vegetable Department so I am happy with that.

My wife also entered the state fair for the first time this year and ended up with 3 ribbons herself in culinary/canning, so I am very proud of her.

    My Ribbons:

    ~Wax Beans = 1st place
    ~Red Okra = 2nd place
    ~Green Beans, Flat type = 4th place
    ~Best of 3 Types of Beans = 4th place
    ~Best Collection of Beans = 5th place
    ~Brussels Sprout = 4th place
    ~Cucumbers, Pickle type = 4th place
    ~Largest Dried Gourd = 5th place
~Best Large Display of Vegetables = 5th place

    My Wife's Ribbons:

    ~Chutney (Green Tomato) = 2nd place
    ~Collection of 6 Types of Pickles/ Relish = 2nd place
~Any Other Candy made with Honey = 3rd place

**I also want to say that Gardening and Entering the State Fair is a very important hobby and part of my life. I appreciate and want to thank everyone that took a moment out of their day to comment. It is VERY much appreciated!

Thanks for the kindness. Sorry to hear of your weather-related garden troubles, which is always a bummer. Better luck in Louisiana?

Thanks for the kind words. My garden is winding down for the year, but if you give me a list of what veggies you like I might deliver you some next year

They look amazing! Displays and all. Never heard of red okra. Nice bean selection. Everything really shows the time and effort you put in the garden this year.

Thanks so much. This is my first year growing red okra. It tastes just like green okra, but has more eye appeal.
