Oh my gosh! This is incredible!!
Early this week I came down with a cold, an din my awake time I started a superflat map in Minecraft to start building a replica of the NES LOZ overworld in player scale. This was done by treating each block on the NES map as a 2 x 2 grid in Minecraft.
Side scrollers do not translate well to 3D map form, and games like most RPGs, Zelda II, etc would be little more than replica pixel art, but this is actually in a scale you can walk around in. It took me maybe 2 days to work on this, of which I did some cheating using Industrial craft's mining laser, and a lot of the land masses are hollow. In retrospect it'd have gone faster if I started one later above ground, to avoid the need to dig up and replace the ground layer.
Now that the overworld is done I will go along the edges of mountains and such and make them look nicer. I plan to do all the caves, and am almost done with the first dungeon- which is actually underground. HOWEVER... digging out each individual room is rather time-consuming, so after I finish the last 2 rooms of dungeon 1, I will build the rest above ground and use Industrial Craft's teleporter pads to link them to their entrances. I do have space to put them all underground, but it's taken me as long to almost finish dungeon 1 as it has to build the overworld. If I do them above ground it'd take me a day to get all the dungeons finished.
I may release this map once I'm done, though I'll have to pack a few mods in with it since I use blocks from mods, and one mod had some slight alterations made for needed custom blocks.

Fry: "It was bound to be somewhere!"
I've mostly finished dungeon 2. It took about an hour building it above ground.

The power mechanics for each teleport. Generators fuel the batteries and redstone links the button up. The underground pad has a door leading to it.

With almost a year in hiatus, I picked this one back up again- using mods and such to give the map more life. It will be totally finished in the next few days.
I've never played Minecraft, but that looks like a lot of work. Pretty amazing!
