El Greco 'Master's of the Universe'/Blackstar mini-comic scanlations

So in Greece the Blackstar toy line from Galoob was sold under the name 'Κυρίαρχοι του Σύμπαντος' which translates as 'Masters of the Universe'! Not only did they change some of the toys around with different paint decos (such as Blackstar as a blonde), they also radically re-imagined the story line of the series, bringing it somewhat more in-line with the earlier mini-comic universe of He-Man and the Master's of the Universe.

Over at the Return to Sagar forum, a member from Greece Blackstar76 has helped to provide us with a lot of information regarding this fascinating hybrid toy line:

"There's this greek toy company named el greco. The company wants to take advantage of the commercial success that motu had in other countries. At the time (I mean 1984) we had no motu action figures in Greece. So, they take the second wave of blackstar figures (laser light), dye blackstar's hair blonde and change his name: So, now the greek blackstar is blond and is called ATLAS (after a powerful titan of the ancient greek mythology). Second in command is klone, who's called LEON (means lion in Greek. The name has to do with his tranformation into the cloud cat, the company assumed it was a lion, which is pretty close). Atlas's other two companions are neptul and... overlord (yep, you read right), who maintained their original names. Alas, we had no Mara action figure... Packaged with the good guys are 4 trobbits, balkar, gossamer, riff and carpo. El Greco dyes them silver and calls them silvermen, magical creatures that help Atlas in his fight against... Kadray!!!

"Kadray is now called Scorpio and he's the chief villain. His minions are Tongo, Gargo and... Zoar!!! Well, Zoar is the palace guard (his name indicates the influence of motu) while the other two maintain their original names. They're helped by the demons (4 demons, one for every bad guy) who are called... demons and they came from a poisonous sea in a planet called sectaurus (they keep messing the lines). Now, the bad guys try to snatch a big diamond which gives the ultimate power to master the universe. The diamond is kept inside the ice castle, which is called the castle of power, and guess who's its ptotector; Atlas and his companions. And they live in the castle!!! So, for the masters of the universe (the name of the greek line, who has a sword and a diamond in it's logo), it's a continuing struggle to protect the diamond of the ultimate power against the bad guys."

The Infaceables, another line of figures from Galoob, were also included in the line later - according to Blackstar76:

"In the greek line 4 of the moonmen (as the greek infaceables line was called) were heroic and the rest were evil. The concept was similar to that of the rock people and the meteorbs in motu. I mean they came from a planet that was destroyed and the heroic moonmen pledged themselves to atlas, helping him in his fight against scorpio (the rock people helped she-ra and he-man against hordak). The evil monnmen went with scorpio."
Blackstar76, in adition to providing the above information, also gave us scans of the mini-comic which came with the toy line. Not only that, but he also gave a translation of the comic as well! To make things a little easier for English audiences, I have started to do 'scanlations' of these pages:

    Thanks guys!

Monteeg: We really should have shared this here earlier!

JafariStew: Yes, this El Greco take on Blackstar/MotU is quite an interesting find - all the original scans are hosted at the Planet Sagar Yahoo Group, though you probably have to be a member to see them. It's worth it though, as there are also scans of the various French Blackstar comics as well as translations for them as well (no scanlations yet though - I haven't finished these ones yet and they're much easier!)

    Also here is page 2:

In the mini-comic that came with the toys, the pages are interspersed black and white and color, but full color versions of all the pages were apparently used in promotions in magazines and comics:

These are back covers to Greek Mickey Mouse comics - so the whole mini-comic was spread out over 12 issues of the comic on the back page!

Interesting how Overlord seems to be the good guy in this comic, as opposed to his role in Blackstar.

Joker95: Their choices for which characters were heroic and which ones weren't are all kind of interesting - Blackstar and Klone (as Atlas and Leon) are obvious as heroic characters, but Overlord really looks like a bad guy!

Also, although the Silvermen are depicted as well, Silver in the comic and in promotional material, the Carpo Silverman actually came in green! Although silver versions were released as well, the green seems to be more common...

The next page of the story:

Leon has kept his full shape shifting powers in this continuity as well - he's the red dragon creature that Neptul is riding.

    The next page:

An interesting observation involving this comic and the French Blackstar comics that appeared in the Pif Gadget magazine is that in both cases, Tongo the Leopard Man is described as being the leader of the Alien Demons (the little figures that came with the bad guys).
