Blog outlining the origin of different MOTU characters

    The entry about Skeletor.

"Skeletor was given legs that could be reused for Mer-Man, with three-toed feet and a more generic shin guard. Instead of the decrepit forearms, he was given unpainted gloved forearms that could be reused for Mer-Man (ironically Mer-Man would eventually lose the painted gloves, making this design change unnecessary)."

This blog post was awesome!!! Are there more for other characters? Great stuff... I was hoping that the art book would have had more history like this.
I will NEVER believe that Mermista beheaded Mer-Man! You sit on a throne of lies.... and smell of beef and cheese, bio writer!!!!

That article was excellent! I'd LOVE to read more of these!
Press down on dragon's head. It sprays enemies with a jet of water!
Press down on a camera's shutter release. It will take pictures that tell stories!

    Excellent article.

As a kid, Skeletor was always one of my favorite characters. He-Man and some of the other good guys seemed kind of boring to me, but the villains were colorful and interesting. I think part of the reason Hordak and King Hiss were brought into the line later was to make Skeletor a "lesser evil" that could occasionally team up with He-Man to face the real threat. Skeletor had become so popular that it was decided to make him more of a "lovable villain" like Mr. Burns on the Simpsons rather than an irredeemably evil character like Hordak or King Hiss.

I just sent a message to Rudy Obrero to know if he had memories about the guy with the red armor between Beast Man & Skeletor on the He-Man/Wind Raider artwork, I had never thought of asking him.
I am also thinking for Zodac but have finally few doubts.

Also regarding your website I discovered an interesting thing about Whiplash that I had never noticed before: the picture from the Mattel catalog with the purple spear.
I crossed one time on eBay a purple spear (sold with a loose Whiplash figure) exactly like this one, I did not buy it but had wondered where from it could come, as for the Faker orange taiwanese belt I think that few early Whiplash figures are coming with this purple spear.
The spear from the sale I seen was not a repaint for sure.
That's very interesting, there seems to be a pattern of first run figures having these slight differences (Striped Tail Battle Cat, the Taiwan Faker with the orange skirt, etc)

I do look forward to hearing what Rudy has to say about the warrior in red. I always thought he was Zodac though.

    Thanks!

Just got the Rudy's answer, it is not Zodac lol

    "Hi Johnny,

That guy is just made up to fill the crowd. I only had Heman, Skeletor, man at arms, teela and beastman to work with at the time.

    Hope this helps

    Rudy"

By the way, look at the Beast Man legs, he has He-Man's boots lol

Thank you TOKYONEVER for the confirmation.

I know Eric from Savage He-Man FB group has been saying for years its not Zodac but just something Rudy propably filled in. And it makes sense.

But always great to have confirmation.

Thank you for tracking down this information! Now I'll have to update my blog

I overlooked the off-model appearance of the character in red because Beast Man was also off model

I'm also in the middle of making the pics display a bit larger, so you dont always have to click on the images to see them properly

I was checking on your FB page, I do not own a FB account it is why I am posting here directly.
The William George drawing referenced to be a Screeech one is not, it is a drawing did for an other toy than Motu: ZORR (1972).
By the way I am pretty sure that Mattel found the inspiration of the Zoar name with this toy, maybe this info can be useful for your future Zoar or Screeech pages.

Excellent article about Merman, as usual.

But I would like to add some minor thing about his sword...

The sword bore a closer resemblance to corn than coral.
On the original design and on the cross sell art, it is not sword made from coral, but from sawfish rostrum.

    a sawfish:

here are some examples of weapons ("swords") made from sawfish rostrum:

Thank you for the heads up! I'll keep this in mind when I get to Zoar. I think you're right, this must have been an inspiration. I updated that Facebook post with your information

Very interesting! Thanks for the information. It didn't occur to me that that's what it was, and I didn't know actual weapons had been made from sawfish. I'll update the blog some time today, and mention your input.

    Thanks!

Hi, glad you're enjoying the blog, and thanks! Please feel free to download anything you like. I don't own the images. The only content I'm generating is the text. [Edited to add, some of the scans and photos are mine, but feel free to use]

I've printed several things off for my wall as well.

Actually I suppose some of the toy photos are mine, but those aren't nearly as interesting as the artwork.

Just don't do what I did and use up all the toner before your wife needs to print something out

    LOL!
I sympathize. Heck, one time back in the day I used up my JOB'S expensive color toner cartridge for their laser printer printing out a lot of art. I had to use the few bucks I had on my creditcard to overnight a cartridge to replace it before I got into trouble.

Thanks! He's a cool character. After I wrote it, Ted Mayer chimed in in the comments that the concept was created by Roger Sweet. It's pretty great to get that kind of real time feedback on the history of the character.
