Question about vintage 3 3/4" G.I. Joe repair

I went to yojoe.com, but couldn't find anything there so I thought I'd ask here. Tonight I was going through my Joes and giving them a proper storage place, rather than a plastic bag, inside a kit case. After that, I looked through my brothers box to see if anything of mine was there, and I realized that about 1/3 of his figures had their rubber bands deteriorated and the torso's were separated from the legs. I was wondering what to use to replace the rubber band? Isn't it something you can find in a hardware store? I just can't remember what they're called. Any help would be most appreciated.

Also, what about finding a proper screw for the backs, in case some of them are missing?

    -----UPDATE 1/28/17-----

I wanted to list the figures and accessories that my brother and I are missing, just in case anyone out there has them, and wants to sell. Depending on my finances at the time of an offer, I may have to wait to take advantage, for which I apologize for making anyone wait.

I'll put them in spoiler tags so that the great length of each list doesn't add tremendously to this post. I have his list organized by year, and another of his stuff listed alphabetically, just in case one works better for different people. I'm planning on giving his back to him all put together, with as many missing figures and parts added back as I can afford between now and when I give them back, which was planned on being a Christmas present, but may end up being a house warming gift, if he buys a house this year, like he plans.

    Thanks for looking.

I have no idea what size they are. But if you do a search on ebay for GI JOE o-rings you'll see sevaral auctions ranging from about $3 for 50 to $5 for 100.

Wow! Sounds like a great deal!

Follow-up question. I am looking into possibly replacing at least a few broken parts, but didn't find any on e-bay, so I was wondering if there is a good source for things like that? I'm sure I'll end up on yojoe.com, so if it's there I'll figure it out, but if there is a better, cheaper or friendlier place, then I'd like to know about it. Primarily I want to give my Snake Eyes v.2 a new crotch piece, since his dong is missing, but he also needs his sword and uzi, so I need to track them down as well, if they're not too expensive that is. Thankfully, I took pretty good care of my guys, so there aren't a ton of broken crotches or thumbs, but there are a few, and I'd like to know the best way to go about sourcing parts.

PS Thanks for the help you guys!

Also, is there a good place to get repro stands that look like the ones that came with certain figures back in the day (Snake Eyes v.4 for example, the black rectangle with one peg)?

    Also, any info on hoses?

lol I just keep thinking of little things I'm missing. : )

To echo what has been said, the O-rings are readily available and very easy to replace. I've done it with most of my old guys, and couldn't be happier with the results.

As for the stands, I'd recommend not only yojoe.com, but eBay. There is a pretty solid selection, ranging from the original stands to reproductions and alternate styles. I've gotten a number of clear ones, and have been happy with them.

I haven't tried replacing the hose, though. Sorry.

Anyways, good luck with your repair efforts!

Thanks! I saw an e-bay lot that had O-rings, T-hooks (from the crotches), screws and an EXTREMELY long piece of hose, so I presume that the hose is probably something you can get at a hardware store. I mean it was really long. Same with the O-rings, I'm pretty much positive that you can buy them in bulk at Home Depot, but I'm also pretty sure that there are multiple sizes, so I'm not sure what size to get. I'd rather spend less at HD and get them now, than pay more and have to wait on them to make it through the mail. I'll post info after I make a trip over there to scope out the options.

    -----EDIT 11/23/16-----

I found out that the O-rings are size 9, but according to the video I saw, they are sold for around $5 for about 10 or so rings, which is obviously way more expensive than the ones you guys mentioned on e-bay. I'll have to go check the actual price to be sure, he could have been mistaken.

    -----EDIT 12/2/16-----

So I tried creating an account on yojoe.com, but it denied me and said something about not allowing spam, which I didn't understand, so I sent an email, which has yet to be replied to; that was over a week ago. Looks like I'm limited to what info I can get here, which is a shame because my next question is pretty specialized, so I may very well not find an answer here. But let's hope for one anyway.

Several of my childhood Joe vehicles and my Battle Platform are pretty dirty and in desperate need of cleaning, and one jet that belongs to my dad was left out in the basement, so it's not only heavily coated with dust, but that dust is in the early stages of molding, so it really needs to be cleaned. The obvious problem is the stickers. Does anyone know the best way to clean without rubbing off the stickers? Most of the cleaning is do-able, but will be tedious, but that molding jet really needs a proper bath to kill the mold, and get rid of an excessive amount of dust.

Anybody have any insight? I'll be doing an internet search, but just in case I don't find anything, I thought I'd ask here. if I do find some good info, I'll add it to this post.

I would recommend just cleaning everything off (stickers and all) and placing reproduction stickers. Your toys will appear brand new. I buy my reproduction stickers from Toyhax.com: http://toyhax.com/116-restoration-sets

Just make sure they sell a set for the vehicle/playset you own before you clean them up.

I second BHJ on the reproduction stickers.

My anecdote wasn't for GI Joe vehicles, but my son wanted a Coleco Pac-Man Tabletop Arcade game from 1983 from Santa for Christmas 2 years ago. Well, since Santa's elves lost the blueprint on those many years ago, Santa had to pick up a functional one on eBay, scrub the worn stickers off it, and replace them with reproduction stickers. It looked as good as the day it was released, and my son was thrilled.

If you aren't a stickler for "original state", repro stickers are the way to go.

Two concerns for repros are that I know that most are not pre-cut, which causes problems with rounded edges, plus it's a ton of work. Also, aren't they fairly pricey? I can't afford spending any money right now. That will probably change, but it certainly limits my current options. Dad's jet is the Phantom X-19, which is a later vehicle if I remember correctly, so reproes wouldn't be all that concerning, especially considering its dire need for cleaning. But yeah, I'd like to keep the originals as much as possible, especially on the Platform.

Thanks for the quick reply btw!

    -----EDIT-----

I saw a comment on that site Benny linked, and it appears they are pre-cut, but that the sizes are also not exact? The commenter said that they "are sized better than Hasbro", whatever that means. Maybe there's just less excess clear sticker around the actual detailed portion? Confirmation?

Also, once I get my camera back, I'll be posting an interesting find I discovered while digging up my Joe's.

Yes, the stickers are die cut exactly as the original vintage stickers were. I've had no problems with the stickers at all. The only thing you'll need is an original blueprint that shows you where the stickers go as these reproduction sets don't come with placement instructions. But you can find vintage vehicle blueprints online like on yojoe.com.

Congrats on the Phantom X-19. That's a cool looking jet and highly desireable. I hope it's in complete condition. Personally, I would spend the extra money for reproduction stickers to make this jet look as awesome as possible.

That's cool, I had no idea. I always liked it, but it is so big, my 8 year old self found it cumbersome to wield, albeit awesome to look at.

I am very surprised at how complete most of my figures are, and they are for the most part in great condition. They are definitely in a plaid with condition, some minor paint rub, missing parts, maybe two or three broken thumbs, only a couple broken crotches. But there is one jewel that really surprised me. One of my favorites as a kid, my Flash figure. He's complete and in tact. The "hose" connecting his gun and pack was glued in at some point I believe, but it is unbroken. And much to my surprise, he is the straight arm version. My file card has a note on the back of it from my dad as most of them do, and it is dated 85, but the straight arm Flash was released in 82. Either it was originally his and he gave it to me in 85, along with the card, or else he bought it in 82, when I was 2 (obviously too young to keep from destroying it) and then gave it to me when I was 5, or else he just happened to find it in clearance around 85. I'm not even sure if he's worth a ton of money, I just know that he is many people's favorite (as he was mine) so I assume he's pretty pricey. I have no intention of selling them, but knowing that I have a gem or two is still a pretty nice feeling.

No problem. I would also invest in a pair of tweezers for proper location placement of these stickers as a lot of them are fairly tiny and my hands aren't as small as they used to be when I was a kid.

I am also looking to obtain a X-19 jet in the future...that meets my collecting standards and won't cost an arm and a leg.

I also had Flash as a kid and I agree, he was awesome. I can't remember if it was a straight arm or a swivel arm but I'll one up you and say that I also believe I had Grand Slam w/ JUMP pad as well. Now, talk about a rare and desirable Joe figure! I vividly remember owning the JUMP pad but my memories are hazy as to owning Grand Slam because Flash was identical to him except that Grand Slam had silver pads and Flash had red pads. Also muddling the picture for me was that you could mail order the JUMP pack separately.

Oh that Jump Pad was awesome! One of my favorite things of my collection. My brother and I both had one. I have one complete (not sure if mail away or the one with the figure), although some well done custom paint was added to the pack. My brothers however, missing the gun, the pack, and the platform legs, but the platform itself is there, painted all black. If that doesn't illustrate the difference between how we both treated our toys, then maybe the pile of legs and torsos will, lol. I didn't have a single broken o-ring, just a few loose ones. His pile of figures is about 1/3 legs and torsos, tons of broken pieces, tons of missing pieces, and lots of custom battle damage paint apps. Our collections put together would have been highly impressive, if his wasn't in shambles.

    Hey,

So sorry I did not see your thread sooner. I have been restoring old Joes and vehicles for a long time. Here is my work: https://flic.kr/ps/31CJQ8 (JUMP on page 2 and 3-was offered in 82 and 83 later with v2 Grand Slam) ALL of the figures and vehicles in the link were broken, stained with God knows what, yellowed, and missing pieces when I started. None of it looked like this when I started.

You can get excellent replacement o rings at Smalljoes.com under collector supplies (25 for 1.75 plus shipping) and you'll find replacement hoses sold by the foot. Cobra Stickers.com has great repro labels for vehicles and even figure decals like insignias and custom stuff. Please feel free to pm me or hit back here with any questions about technique or my process. I'd be happy to share everything that I know with you. (that goes for all of you on this site). On a GI Joe sight, ironically, I gave a guy a nice formula to clean up his dirty old Sorceress figure and it came out really nice.

Yeah the original Grand Slam had red pads and came with the HAL in 1982. The original JUMP came without an operator. The Jump was rereleased in 1983 with a silver padded (not to mention swivel arm) Grand Slam as the operator.

No worries! Thanks for the reply!

I do have a question about rubber treads though. What's the best way to remove them without breaking them, and clean them without harming them? I know that some of them had a metal pin you could slide out to take them off, but I'm not sure my two tanks do. I have the Mobat and the M.B.T. tank.

This sort of ties in to the thing I mentioned at the very end of comment 10 in this thread. I have the Coastal defender, and I used it to store some loose missiles and random parts. I also stored a pair of small rubbery treads. The treads are in great shape, but the cause a weird deterioration of the plastic of the surrounding objects (the most tragic to me were the missiles for the Snow Cat. This melted the plastic, is the best way to describe it. On the floor of the Defender, where the tread was stuck to it, now there is a permanent, deep impression of the treads. It looks as though a piece of really hot metal was laid there, deep impression with raised edges. It's really bizarre. I'm only mentioning it before I can post images, in case anyone else may be storing rubber treads with plastic. It is truly strange. Some of the random parts were fused together because they were in close proximity to the same point of the tread.

I never owned the H.A.L. so I know I didn't have a Grand Slam from there but I did own the F.L.A.K. It used to double as a laser pistol for me.

My pleasure, that's what communities are for.

If there is no tread pin than you can normally flip them right off with care, IF your rubber treads are stiff and you're afraid of tearing them then rub some baby oil on them and let it set in for a little. Once off you can really get in there with the oil. That should restore the elasticity in them but I'd advise you to then soak the treads in warm water and detergent to remove the excess superficial oil after a little while. Give the oil a little time to soak in though. Winddex gets the oil off really well but then make sure to wash the ammonia off with water and soap as well or the long term effects of oil and/or Windex may ruin your toy. Petroleum in the oil may melt the plastic over time if left on there and ammonia will dry it out and make it brittle. I find that a short soaking in baby oil even once rinsed off, restores some shine and pliability back into the plastic. I just pulled the treads off of my MOBAT. I should have extra MOBAT threads if you need them but I doubt I have any Mauler treads but I have other parts for BOTH tanks if you need just let me know. Make a mental note of the position of the gear shifter on the Mauler if you open it up, so when you align the parts back together for the motor you'll know what position the shifter was left in.

    My normal routine:

First take photo reference for all decals (assuming they were put on right but that's what blue prints are for). Then I clean off all non painted areas of figures/vehicles with warm detergent and water and a tooth brush after disassembling them as much as possible and pulling off all decals. Painted areas get the same soap and warm water with a Q Tip (or you'll brush the paint right off). Then rise the pieces and rub baby oil on them. This will help get any decal residue off and restore some youth to the plastic. Then wash with soap and water again, rise again, then windex to get all of the oil excess off, then more soap and warm water to clean off the Windex. Allow all parts to dry. Then reassemble and apply fresh decals. White and light grey pieces with no paint get soaked in Hydrogen peroxide for a day in the sun to whiten and remove all yellowing.

Sadly many folks have had some bad experiences with long term storage of rubber with plastic, especially if great amounts of heat are involved, like an attic or garage in warmer southern climates. Nothing for it but to replace the pieces. I store my stuff in my basement where it never goes above 85 degrees and it's dry, in a room away from the direct heat from the boiler or water heater, where the windows are blacked out, and in archival/acid free bags from Ultra Zip and then store them in their bags in opaque bins so not even artificial light can get to them. Hope that helps.

Also let me know what replacement parts you need. You'll accumulate lots of excess spare parts in your endeavor. I don't have the heart to throw them out but I'd gladly send them to you for just the cost of the shipping.

Wow! That's incredibly nice of you! I have them listed out, and there's quite a few, but there is a chance that some parts are mixed in with my brother's Joe's, but he's giving me a hard time about letting me see them, since they're buried in one of his closets. Plus I need to locate my dad's bunch for the same reason, which is another headache. I'd hate for you to give me some parts that I actually have, I just didn't know it. I'll list them below, just to see out of curiosity what you have, but it will be after Christmas that I can afford anything, and who knows when I'll finally be able to track down their stashes. I very well may be short a little for my single ship Thunder Cats sub.

This is just parts, I have the figures.

Armored Cobra Commander 87: backpack, mask hose.
Croc Master 87: leash, mask hose (those pesky mask hoses)
Psych Out 87: antenna. I actually have mine, but it's just the part that plugs into his head, the antenna part is broken off.
Raptor 87: hawk is missing its talons
    Hydro Viper 88: dagger
Alley Viper 89: shield and gun (I'm pretty sure my brother has both of those)
Frag Viper 89: missing 2 grenades
Night Creeper 90: kris and sword
Dial Tone 90 (the one with the sound fx backpack): machine gun, laser gun
    Cold Front 90: pistol, microphone
Bazooka 85: helmet, backpack, missile launcher
Dusty 85: gun stand feet thing (I have the gun)
Cobra Frogman 85: one flipper, air mask
Ship Wreck 85: gun, hook and string (I have Polly, but one of his/her talons is broken off)
    Snake Eyes 85: sword
Mainframe 86: telephone (I have the backpack but the antenna is broken off)
    Wet Suit 86: mouth piece
    Baroness 84: backpack
    Duke 83: binoculars
    T.A.R.G.A.T. 89: joystick
    Mutt v.2 89: night stick
    Torpedo 83: flippers x2, harpoon
Fire Fly 84: pack, pack cover, sub-machine gun, walkie talkie (Brian Regan)
Heavy Metal 85: sub-machine gun, microphone
    Blocker 87: visor
Battle Platform 85: Rifle with the bayonet (bottom right on the weapons tree on the stock photo on yojoe.com)
Serpentor's air chariot body. I have the head and fins, just not the main body. Also his cape is torn or cut.

I guess I'm missing more than I realized. I'm also missing a few figures that I know we had. Some or all may very well be with their stuff.

Cobra Commander with hood (84 or 85, not sure if mail away or carded. I have the file card and it's dated 86 on the back, so it's probably the 85-86)
    Iron Grenadier
    Metal Head 90
Storm Shadow (God I hope that one of them has him)

That's just the figures, I haven't inventoried my vehicles yet, just the Battle Platform. I know my Hydrofoil is missing some parts.

    -----EDIT 12/8/16-----

Question: is there a way to remove enamel paint on Joe's without damaging the figure?

I found several of my dad's Joe's, and much to my chagrin, they are customized with enamel paint. The most tragic is his straight arm Rock'n'Roll that he re-painted to look like himself, complete with black brief case from another figure, to make it look like he's going to work at D.I.G.I.TA.L. (with two bandoliers of bullets strapped to his chest; draw your own conclusions on that one). Granted, thanks to him mixing and matching parts from a Trip Wire v3 88 (Tiger Force), the straight arms, crotch and thighs of R&R are unpainted.

He also has a straight arm Zap complete with custom bullet holes (melted with a soldiering iron) painted red, on nearly all portions of the figure, excluding only the left arm (broken thumb), left thigh and both shins. However the back portion of the foot at the peg hole is broken off.

I did manage to find the X-19 pilot Ghost Rider complete with action scarf, and a v1 Junkyard and Mutt, complete, but with a broken O-ring. So those are cool. Plus I could probably source the parts to make a complete straight arm R&R out of what I have that's unadulterated.

It's no wonder my brother's pile of Joe's is about 1/3 body parts. He learned it from the master.

Bahh! I hate it when a joke goes over my head. Asking for an explanation just kills it.

With all the broken dongs I'm pretty sure there is a Lorena Bobbitt joke in there somewhere.

Plus I need to locate my dad's bunch for the same reason, which is another headache. I'd hate for you to give me some parts that I actually have, I just didn't know it. I'll list them below, just to see out of curiosity what you have, but it will be after Christmas that I can afford anything, and who knows when I'll finally be able to track down their stashes. I very well may be short a little for my single ship Thunder Cats sub.

This is just parts, I have the figures.

Armored Cobra Commander 87: backpack, mask hose.
Croc Master 87: leash, mask hose (those pesky mask hoses)
Psych Out 87: antenna. I actually have mine, but it's just the part that plugs into his head, the antenna part is broken off.
Raptor 87: hawk is missing its talons
    Hydro Viper 88: dagger
Alley Viper 89: shield and gun (I'm pretty sure my brother has both of those)
Frag Viper 89: missing 2 grenades
Night Creeper 90: kris and sword
Dial Tone 90 (the one with the sound fx backpack): machine gun, laser gun
    Cold Front 90: pistol, microphone
Bazooka 85: helmet, backpack, missile launcher
Dusty 85: gun stand feet thing (I have the gun)
Cobra Frogman 85: one flipper, air mask
Ship Wreck 85: gun, hook and string (I have Polly, but one of his/her talons is broken off)
    Snake Eyes 85: sword
Mainframe 86: telephone (I have the backpack but the antenna is broken off)
    Wet Suit 86: mouth piece
    Baroness 84: backpack
    Duke 83: binoculars
    T.A.R.G.A.T. 89: joystick
    Mutt v.2 89: night stick
    Torpedo 83: flippers x2, harpoon
Fire Fly 84: pack, pack cover, sub-machine gun, walkie talkie (Brian Regan)
Heavy Metal 85: sub-machine gun, microphone
    Blocker 87: viser
Ghost rider 88: scarf (haven't located GR yet, so he may have it)
Battle Platform 85: Rifle with the bayonet (bottom right on the weapons tree on the stock photo on yojoe.com)

I know my Moray is missing some parts.

No worries man. You'll see that in time you'll accumulate extra parts as you work on your projects. Even though Ebay has some great stores that sell every little part you can think of there will be times where you will have to buy an entire figure or partial figure for the one part that you need. That's also where you'll build up a cache of screws and crotch t bars. I just don't have the heart the throw the stuff out so if I can put the parts to good use it would make me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

Try to keep the screws with the correct figures too. The screws do change from year to year and then change back, but the thigh halves are pretty thin and if you use the wrong screw you can split the thigh or even poke through. And keep back screws separate from leg screws. Folks looking for a pedigree collection may even check the leg screws to make sure it's the correct screw for that year's figure.

I'll hit you back about the parts. 82-84 may be tough as that stuff sold on Ebay pretty well, 84-88 I may be able to help you out. I might have another straight arm Rock n Roll (no accessories, and needing a new o ring though) if you need one. No zap though, more's the pitty. Marauder Gun Runners has replacement mics for Heavy Metal, Lift Ticket, and Sneak Peek IF you're not concerned about your collection's pedigree and want to save some money. They seem to be direct re castings. They also have a Snake Eyes v2 Falchion BUT I don't think it's a direct recasting. However if you're just looking for a really good substitute give MGR a try. Oh and if you're a total nut job like me try Beggarscanyontoys.com, they have pretty good repro-card backs with character specific and accurate plastic bubbles.

As far as enamel paint goes I haven't found a method that works without damaging the Joes. Turpentine can melt plastic. I tried acetone on a upper Mauler chassis that I got for free. The owner had, as a child, detailed the engine and tools under the engine and tool supply covers with a silver Sharpe. He did a remarkable job I must say, but it wasn't going to be a properly restored Mauler with that. While the acetone did remove the Sharpe it also blanched out the tan coloring on the plastic. So my theory is, hey if it's messed up anyway try the acetone with a Q Tip (to control the flow) out and see if it works, If not, then it's no "more messed up" than when you started. But in all honesty you'll probably have to replace the part. Again Ebay has more than a few really good Joe parts stores.

I feel you on the child hood 'customizations." I started making my own team like Dutch's in Predator and really muffed up a lot of my child hood collection.

and yeah that single ship Thunder Cats sounded like a good idea when I signed up for it but it's a big nut hanging over me now.

So after finally getting my dad and brothers collection, and sorting through the random parts by using the archives at yojoe.com, I am left with several accessories and missiles that I have no idea what they go to. I am hoping that you guys can help. Also, there are w few that I have an idea about, but could use confirmation.

    -----UPDATE-----

These are the ones that have been placed:

    6,7,8,11,13,15,16,17,19,21,24,25,26,28

And finally, here's a close-up of the smaller items.

I think 6 and 25 are vintage Star Wars guns, and I believe that 9 may be a Battle Beast weapon. 10,12 and 22 appear to broken off of something.

Any help would be EXTREMELY appreciated. I've been through every item in the archive (most of them several times) for the years that we were collecting (82-92) and I still can't place these.

Thanks in advance for any help! : )

From the back of my head.., 9 is the weapon of Dengar and the Hoth stormtrooper, 25 is the regular stormtrooper weapon but it was issued with several other figures as well. Both are indeed vintage SW.

8 looks like they are Phantom X-19 stealth fighter missiles.
