Oil painting: The Battle for Grayskull 2.0 (after A. Alcala)

"The Battle for Castle Grayskull" was my project for Grayskull Con 2016 It's a conversation of Alfredo Alcala's famous drawing into a huge classic oil painting on canvas at a mighty 100 x 120 cm size (about 39,5 x 47,3 inches). The original is a page of the minicomic "He-Man and the Power Sword" from 1981 (see it here: http://www.he-man.org/assets/images/...y/231_full.jpg)

This is for sure one of the most difficult paintings I ever made of MOTU. The complex scene had a difficult composition, graphical inaccuracy in the original drawing didn't make it easier. The setting was abstract, the anatomy was a huge challenge. And even the actions of the single characters were not completely clear at the beginnning.

As always I added some easter eggs. Some are very obvious, like Zodac, Strotos and the boot dagger, some are much more subtle, like inluding stylistic devices that were often used in fantasy art of the 70s or 80s.

There has been a first version in October, but I put it back onto the easel in December to make major modicications - I just wasn't satisfied with it.
Now here we go, the new version works well for me.

    Enjoy!

That is amazing! All of your paintings have been phenomenal, but this is a personal favorite of mine. Great work!

    Wow, man! That's awesome!

    You truly have amazing skills!
It seems like pretty much all current artists only do digital paintings these days (including myself I must confess).
Good to see there are still artists doing actual oil paintings on canvas!

Thumbs up! Keep up the excellent work!

Gorgeous stuff! I love the little details, like how there's a glow coming from inside of Skeletor's skull...

I have to echo this. There are so many subtle details to catch, you can't discover them all in one viewing. That's one thing that made the original MOTU artwork so great. This is just wonderful stuff

That is some serious skill there!

It uses lighting to great effect (e.g. rim lighting), the detailed expression of the characters just makes them come alive. When I look at this I get a strong sense of "dark fantasy" done right.

May I ask how many hours you spent on this piece?

    Thank you all!

@Iluvart - of course you may. But I don't take time while painting.
Nevertheless I assume it took about 150 hours.
