I love this movie. Michelle Pfeiffer's Catwoman jump started puberty for me.

-great soundtrack , I cried when Penguin died

It was the year that the best animated show hit the waves as well and that show had some Burton elements in it besides the comics

I remember seeing this in the theater and being wildly disappointed.

I still find it a visually stunning movie that's a complete mess plot-wise. I find the Catwoman moments very watchable (for more reasons than one), but absolutely hate everything about the Penguin.

I liked BATMAN RETURNS, but I loved BATMAN The Animated Series! That's actually what got me back into collecting toys.

Saw this in theaters when i was 11 3 times and enjoyed it! i had some of the toys, ate the cereal, had cards, comic adaptation, t-shirt and all that stuff and i watched/taped the animated show on Fox and WB as a kid and a teen.

Who else thought Michelle was hot in this movie? i dug her since i was 4 when i saw Ladyhawke on video and she was foxy in this movie. Best Catwoman besides Julie Newmar, Lee Meriwether, Adrienne Barbeau and Anne Hathaway.

Yet who else noticed on the first 3 seasons of Batman TAS that Penguin and Selina Kyle look like their movie counterparts and some elements of the show had movie tie ins even Jack Napier?

I've always had pretty mixed feelings about this movie. Something about the vibe just seemed off to me.

So you think it's inferior to the original?

Oh, totally. They gave PENGUIN 'movie flipper-hands' instead of normal hands. The BATMOBILE was very movie inspired. That's definitely where all the heavy dark colors came from, not to mention the gruff BATMAN voice.

Jack Napier name too, the Mechanic episode was inspired by Returns.

Don't forget Selina's costume in Season 4 being like the movie's.

Except for the color, I thought her costume in Seasons 1-3 was closer looking in design to the movie than season 4, particularly her mask.

and in Batman Adventures, Selina stopped dying her hair when she discovers it's made from animals and went back to black hair.

I wouldn't call it the best Batman movie, but it's definitely my favourite - it's dark and creepy while still being almost comically off-kilter, putting it somewhere between the '66 series and the Nolan trilogy in terms of tone, which is just about right for me.

A huge part of my affection for it, like pretty much everyone else, is Pfeiffer's Catwoman. Yes, she's hot (I'm a gay man and even I can't deny that), but more importantly she gives a fantastic, complex performance that is four different characters in one. I think it set the template for later superhero movies where the villains get all the character development (often at the expense of the hero, which you could argue happens in Returns).

I particularly love her costume, which is an excellent example of character and design working together - I wrote a whole paper on it for the costume design element of my performing arts course at college; the way its skin-tightness suggests a whole new personality, hastily and roughly stitched together out of something bold and daring that was hidden, possibly unworn, at the back of her wardrobe; that the only bits of Selina you can see are the eyes, nose and mouth, all the sort of sensory bits; the fact you can see the seams just barely holding her together, which come apart, stitch by stitch, as her new identity is knocked and challenged throughout the film, leading to the climactic scene where she tears away the mask to finally combine both Selina and Catwoman into one person...

I didn't get a very good mark for that paper, so it's possible that's just a lot of pretentious butt-water.

Plus, it paved the way for Batman: the animated series, which is my absolute favourite piece of Batman ever (and includes what I would call the best Batman movie, Mask of the Phantasm).

Absolutely - Bruce Timm even mentions in the (gorgeous) book Batman Animated that Warner Features specifically requested that the Penquin and Catwoman resemble their Returns counterparts - it wasn't as much of an issue when the show came back as the new Batman adventures, so Penguin was then redesigned to the more businessman-like look that Timm had originally wanted.

I think this movie's take on The Penguin is still the best I've seen of the character. Much better than the usual fat mobster with an umbrella fetish.

Watching it now, the tone is a bit too goofy in spots, I prefer 89 Batman overall.

This is the best Batman movie by far! Loved Catwoman. This was awesome! Saw it on my 12th bday with my granny!!! She fetched me and a friend from school just to go see it.

    hate this movie.

    So un needlessly gross.

It was the first style of movie, IMHO, where we got In Name Only characters. that was NOT the Penguin or Catwoman.

Just imposters with the same name.

And how do you feel about the Batman Returns tie-ins on TAS i mentioend even blonde Selina to Penguin looking like Devito in the first 3 seasons?

It definitely is a bit goofy when compared to 89. 3 years did make a big difference. Yet its still very grim and dark in spots and the Penguin can be downright evil at times. The film seems smaller/more enclosed when compared to 89 even though that was filmed on a set also.

For me this is where the Batman film series ends. The Schumacher films are their own thing entirely IMO.

Full disclosure: I am totally biased for 89/92, UBER fanboy doesn't even describe it! The rose colored glasses are always on when talking about 89/92.

    • Would've been nice to see more of Max Shreck vs Bruce Wayne, but that would give us three villains and we saw the result of that with Batman & Robin !
    • I've never been able to decide between Michelle Pfeiffer or Julie Newmar as the definitive Catwoman.
    • DeVito owns the Penguin despite Burgess Meredith playing the character exactly like he was portayed in the 1960s comics, nails it.
    • I just love the evilness of DeVito, even though he has an army of penguins with little rocket launchers which is goofy for sure. Who would have the time to put those on all those penguins Ha Ha.
    • The one thing I cant deal with in 92 is the mini Batmobile ride the Penguin uses to control the real car. Good grief!
