Taking up sketching and trying to improve my drawing skills

I'm taking up sketching as another hobby. I'm doing a lot of MOTU stuff. I will be posting my images in this thread.

    He-man

    http://www.he-man.org/forums/boards/...4&d=1498072846

    Orko

    http://www.he-man.org/forums/boards/...8&d=1498341726

    Man-e-faces

    http://www.he-man.org/forums/boards/...3&d=1498072818

I sketch the images in pencil and then use colored pencils on a photocopy (to preserve the original). More to come!

    Orko is really good.

He-Mans noise is a little to small if you ask me but faces are difficult, the proportions are really tricky.

Man-E-Faces is my favorite so far.

Keep it up. Drawing is such a relaxing hobby! At least for me.

Thank you for the kind words. I will definitely make more he-men. The more I draw a given subject, the better the images I get.

I have just completed Ram Man.

This is my first attempt at sketching Skeletor. I think I achieved a pretty decent likeness.

This is my second successful attempt at sketching Orko. I initially was befuddled by his head and hat, but with practice I started being able to capture the likeness pretty well.

After purchasing some 28 lb. printer paper, I went back and recolored my first Orko sketch. This looks way better.

The heavy paper works better for colored pencils. The 20 lb. crap is thin and wrinkly.

This is my first sketch of Cringer. I'm pretty happy with how this one turned out!

I made some minor modifications to Cringer and recolored. In particular, the left side of his face was not symmetrical to the right side so I fixed that.

If anyone is interested in coloring any of my images, just let me know.
I'd be glad to upload the black and white images for you to print out and color.

All of them are good and you are getting better with every new sketch.

Cringer looks very spot on! Great job

Thanks for the encouragement! I'm having a good time making them.

I had trouble yesterday with Teela and the Sorceress, but here is Dree Elle.

My next sketch is the Monster of Moragore.

He's not perfect, but he's not bad. The actual paper image looks very cool. More so than the scanned upload. His head isn't as bright green as the photo shows.

Phil, you are doing a great job.

Mind if I ask what your process is? I could maybe help with proportions if I know what you know about how to do setups and all.

Thank you for the kind words.

I start off drawing them with a pencil. I usually start with the eyes and then build the rest of the head around the eyes. Once I have the pencil drawing, I make a photocopy and don't touch the original pencil sketch ever again. I go over all the lines with a fine point marker and then color with colored pencils. That's all there is to it, really.

This is what the pencil sketches look like if anyone is interested.

The pencil sketches often have a lot of eraser marks, lol. But the good news is the scanner does not pick those up.

This is a sketch of Prince Adam. I made this a while ago and forgot to post it.

It's a neat little drawing. I wish I could move his left eye over and up a little bit, but it's too late. :P

I picked up some She-ra DVDs so I can attempt some of those characters. Here is Kowl.

EDIT: Wow, it's a wonderful drawing but the eyes needed to be much larger, heh.

This is my sketch of Gen. Tataran.

    http://www.he-man.org/forums/boards/...9&d=1502408127

I used several different pencils to get that color for his armor. But I didn't get close to finding a color match for his grayish-green skin.

You are getting better and better with every new sketch and it simply shows how much fun you are having

The problem with coloring is, itīs almost impossible to match colors. Even nowadays with digital help. Look at cartoons, you always knew which book a character would choose from the shelf since it was differently colored than the rest.

And even in real life colors are tricky, Captain Kirks famous green tunic is gold in real life but the lights and the surrounding make it look green on screen.

I think you did an amazing job and i have fun seeing what new sketch you are coming up with!

Yeah, I think in that situation most of the books are just part of the background drawing/painting. The one that will actually be used in animation are not part of the background drawing and so stand out.

Colored pencils don't make it any easier, heh. I bought a box of 100 different colors, but it's still hard to match the cartoon a lot of times.

Thanks! It makes me feel good to know that at least one person other than me is getting enjoyment out of them.

Here is a sketch of Masque.

    http://www.he-man.org/forums/boards/...0&d=1502828663

Now I shrunk this one down considerably because it was really large. I also left it black & white because I think it looks cool that way. This should give people an idea of what my sketches look like after I go over them with the black marker. Step 1 is to draw them with pencil. Step 2 is to use the black marker.

His face....duuuh mask... looks great and i like the black and white version.

And to tell you the truth, iīm a little shocked and even disappointed that i am the only one who is responding.

When i started to post my little sketches back in 2010 there were so many people here who cheered me on and even helped me with coloring and gave me advise and encouragement!

It really helped me and gave me a boost to do more to prove their support is heard and not wasted on me.

These were other times i guess but i miss that more active and supportive fan-art forum.

I always had fun here and was looking forward to see the sketches and pictures others made. Sure artists like gbagok or sharpie are professional sketch artist and we will never be as perfect as they are but who cares as long as we have fun drawing what we like and what makes us happy

I'm going to start posting them on Twitter. Although I'm not fully schooled up on how Twitter works as I only started a few weeks ago. But, hopefully, there will be more people there who like them. Maybe I can get some followers. Mostly this part of the forums just seems to be a lot of guests. I don't see a lot of members coming in here.
