He-Man
and the Masters of the Universe Magazine
Issue #15. Summer 1988.
The
theme of this issue is jungle oriented, as the cover
(and the inside poster) shows He-Man and Skeletor doing
battle in what is described as the "Wild Jungle."
The opening "Greetings" page features another
scene from the Wild Jungle: while He-Man looks on, a
new friend, a distinguished jungle tribesman, kneels
in the grass, gesturing towards a herd of giraffes running
in the distance. This tribesman is dressed much in the
way of an African native of Earth, in a brief one-shouldered
tunic, with gold and silver beads and bracelets, a tall
furred helmet, and Eternian-style fur boots. He also
wears a sparkling diamond earring, and carries an impressive
2-bladed spear and a large zebra-skinned tribal shield.
While this "wild man" is easily the most fascinating
point of interest in this issue, not a word of explanation
is given about him! He and his jungle are shown, but
not discussed. There is a 2-page picture-studded article
on the wildlife of Kenya (not He-Man related), and a
"Mask-Arade" animal mask making activity feature
(not He-Man related), but not a shred of information
on He-Man's new ally, or his jungle home, is to be found.
How very strange. This issue's "Powermail"
features letters from fans old and new, male and female.
People are still raving about the He-Man movie! Also
included are a cute drawing of Tri-Klops, and an astoundingly
meticulous rendering of Blast-Attak.

Story: She-Ra in "The Big Trees"
Glimmer and Perfuma wave goodbye to Adora, and embark
on a camping trip to the far-off site of the Great Forest,
where grow the largest, most ancient trees in all Etheria.
But when they arrive, they come upon a team of lumberjacks,
commanded by Catra, logging the tremendous trees for
the Horde! Attempting to slip away to get help, the
girls wind up captured and tied up in the tent of the
lead woodcutter, Derek. Derek doesn't like serving Catra,
but his men need the work to support their families.
Derek likes holding rebel captives even less, for the
strapping woodsman finds himself intrigued by the strange
plant-girl Perfuma (doesn't he have a family?), an attraction
on which the girls capitalize, helping Glimmer to escape
while Perfuma keeps Derek occupied. Catra is furious
at Derek for falling for this trick, but Derek seems
all the more enchanted by Perfuma. Glimmer races back
towards the Crystal Castle, and meets Adora and Spirit,
who were on their way to join the camping expedition.
Sending the exhausted Glimmer on home, Adora continues
on to the Great Forest, as She-Ra. Flying over the forest
on Swift Wind, She-Ra plucks the loggers from the treetops,
and dumps them into the river flowing past the Great
Forest. Dispersing the remainder of the loggers, She-Ra
is then challenged by Catra on the ground. She-Ra causes
a log-roll which nearly flattens Catra, and then, aided
by Derek, sends her screeching down the river in the
midst of a log flow. Derek's attraction to Perfuma has
made him realize how important trees are, and he apologizes
for cutting down a portion of the Great Forest, promising
to plant new trees in their place. Perfuma is charmed,
and offers to help Derek and his men to find jobs in
the neighboring villages. And then she and She-Ra fly
off on Swift Wind, having committed their good deed
for the day.

Story II: "The Tournament"
As you may recall, at the conclusion of last issue's
cataclysmic He-Man epic, Eternia was saved, but He-Man
and Skeletor had vanished without a trace! As "The
Tournament" opens, it is revealed that He-Man and
Skeletor have survived the obliteration of Skeletor's
Energy Amplifier, by a stroke of sheer luck. They were
transported away from Eternia at the moment of the tremendous
explosion, and appear at the center of a large arena,
in the strange op-art realm known as Dimension X. They
were brought here by King Altron, at the suggestion
of his Counselor, Zang, to fight the ultimate battle
of good vs. evil, for the king's amusement!! The Power
Sword and Havoc Staff lie locked in glass cases before
Altron's throne, and the king promises a great reward
to the victor. He-Man is appalled, and refuses to fight
for sport. As he storms from the arena, he is accosted
by a desperate underling of the king. The nameless minion
pleads with He-Man to battle and defeat Skeletor, for
Counselor Zang engineered this competition to bring
Skeletor here, to form an alliance with the lord of
destruction to overthrow King Altron! Discovering a
worthy cause to battle for, He-Man decides to fight.
Armed with 4-pronged pitchforks, He-Man and Skeletor
meet on the field of battle. As it always goes in these
"ultimate battle of good vs. evil" things,
He-Man fights fairly, while Skeletor pulls every dirty
trick he can manage, much to Zang's secret delight.
But when He-Man gains the upper hand anyway, Zang pulls
a trick of his own, propelling the Havoc Staff from
its resting place, into Skeletor's waiting grasp, with
the push of a hidden button. Zang quickly blames the
action on Skeletor's resourcefulness to the king. The
battle takes a decidedly uneven turn, as an unarmed
He-Man must run for his life from bolts of fiery death
from Skeletor's staff. Ducking behind a wall, He-Man
buys himself a brief respite, while Skeletor's blasts
weaken the makeshift shield. He-Man topples the crumbling
wall towards Skeletor, then vaults beneath it to take
Skeletor in a surprise tackle. King Altron declares
He-Man the victor, owing to his cleverness and bravery.
He-Man then takes the opportunity to detail Zang's overthrow
plot to the king. The exposed evildoer pulls a gun,
but is pinned to the wall by He-Man's artfully tossed
pitchfork. As Zang is lead away, King Altron expresses
his gratitude to He-Man, for his power of good has saved
Dimension X from a rule of tyranny. He-Man is glad to
have helped, while Skeletor winds up sealed with a cylindrical
glass cell, vowing furiously to revenge himself on He-Man,
leaving readers wondering, "...So where's the great
reward the king promised?!"
Puzzles
and Activies
"Power Puzzles": 2 pages of off-topic puzzles.
"Scrambled Hamburgers" is a jumble puzzle,
featuring mixed-up hamburger condiments (the hell?!),
while "Castle Hassle" is an elaborate maze
up and down the ancient staircases of a collapsing stone
fortress. Okay, Castle Hassle might be construed as
a (very dumb) Eternian landmark, but come on!! A hamburger
puzzle?!
Posters
Poster # 22 presents the issue's cover, a "Wild
Jungle" battle between He-Man and Skeletor, at
a height of 1 page,and a width of 3 pages, owing to
a gatefold extension on 1 side. He-Man rides a lion
into battle, while Skeletor charges forward atop an
elephant. A massive herd of pachyderms fade into the
jungle mists in the extended background.
