Masters
of the Universe Magazine
UK. Issue #69,
1988.
Feature
Story 1: "Contest of Champions"
This story features another Contest of Champions, like
the one seen in issue #58. The heroic and evil warriors
enter against one another. This time He-Man is present.
Unlike the last time, the heroic warriors start winning
from the very start and the evil warriors pose no threat.
(cont'd in next part)
Master
Mail
This issue's Master Mail contains a question from Aidan
(yes, honestly! Twice in a row!) asking why Grizzlor
is so completely dumb... the answer is "I guess
every planet has a Grizzlor, Aidan. I'm sure you know
someone like him on Earth."
Feature
Story 2: "Contest of Champions", Cont'd
The heroic warriors continue to win, so when it comes
to the final match, between He-Man on Skeletor on their
feline steeds, the evil warriors use magic tricks to
divert He-Man. But He-Man still beats Skeletor to the
finish line and is hailed the champion of Eternia.
Feature
Story 3: "Battle of the Titans"
In a story with radically different artwork from usual,
He-Man is accompanying an archaeologist to the site
of an ancient city. The archaeologist finds a stone
that is cursed by the power of a sun demon. The sun
demon attacks them, but He-Man destroys it by cutting
off the rays of the sun.
Power
Pin-Up
This issue's power pin-up is of a scene from the live-action
movie, showing He-Man held captive by Skeletor's troopers.
RATING:
2/5 Overall, this is a pretty lame issue. The "Contest
of Champions" story is pretty pointless, since
it was done in issue #58 in a much better style. There
isn't even any threat for most of the story- the heroic
warriors are winning right from the beginning. And it
makes for bad continuity since issue #58 stated that
the contests happened every ten years..... yet this
is in no way ten years after the last one! It seems
to me that the writers were stuck for ideas, couldn't
think of any and so they just did a cheap remake of
an old story. The "Battle of the Titans" story
isn't that good either. No, the best thing in this issue
is my letter on the letters page... well, ok, I'm biased.....
