Here's the latest newsletter! :) This is a lot shorter than thenewsletters have been for the past few months now that I'm starting to runout of content. Sorry about the delay - as some of you know, I've been onvacation for a couple of months. Anyway, I need your submissions to keepthis thing alive, so keep e-mailing me your ideas, stories, columns, andwhatnot to me at ctyner@awod.com.
Recent changes: I've removed the 'Internet' section listing various webpages. Since anyone interested in visiting web pages probably has webaccess, there's a list at http://www.he-man.org/ctyner/links.html that
you can use. Also, I've decided to move from "Greyskull" to "Grayskull".
(No matter which one I use, people complain...) :)
If for any reason, you need to unsubscribe, e-mail ctyner@cs.clemson.eduwith UNSUBSCRIBE as the subject.
[Help!]
In all the introductions, I keep saying that I need content for thenewsletter. I'm running very low on things to put in here, so pleasee-mail me content and suggestions at ctyner@awod.com.One suggestion I got was for a letter column. Would that be somethingyou'd like to see?
[I Need A Listserv!]
If any of you run your own servers and could help me out, I'd appreciateit! Sending out a multi-part newsletter to 2,000 people is really timeconsuming, plus adding people manually to the list is a pain too. Ifsomeone out there has listserv access, e-mail me... I really, really, really appreciate it! :)
I'd really appreciate it if someone would take over the archiving. I'lleven send you my GeoCities username and password so you can keep everythingin the same place (that way no one will have to update their links)...Please e-mail me if you'd like to help me out by doing this. Thanks!
[He-Ro]
I'm sure pretty much everyone on the list knows about He-Ro, the spin-offline from He-Man that was never released in the U.S.
There's finally a He-Man/She-Ra newsgroup on Usenet, thanks to the effortsof CGreyskull@aol.com. Come join the discussion (and try to ignore all thespam), and if your news server doesn't carry alt.fan.heman-shera, e-mailthe sysadmin and ask them to add it.
There are plenty of people working to get He-Man and She-Ra back on the airin the United States, and Zadoc Angell (angellaz@norwich.net) is leadingthe effort. Here is Zadoc's latest update:
The movement to revive He-Man and She-Ra is well under way! Our packagefor Rosie O'Donnell is almost complete. We'll be sending her a MOC(mint-on-card) Thunder Punch He-Man, an MOC She-Ra, an MOC Battle ArmorSkeletor, and a He-Man/She-Ra Christmas Special video. Hopefully, we'llreceive a small tidbit of on-air promotion for the gift.
We need signatures for the petitions! With 1400 people subscribed to thisnewsletter, there's no reason why our petitions are still in the lowhundreds. These petitions are a crucial part of the He-Man and She-Rarevival campaign! To view and sign them, go tohttp://www.norwich.net/~angellaz/petition.html. If you have any securityconcerns (ie. you don't want to give away your phone number), I'm sure thatthe petition writers will be very understanding. Sign up today!
Of more importance is our upcoming campaign to Hallmark Entertainment. This is the company that owns the Filmation library, which includes theHe-Man and She-Ra cartoons. Currently, Hallmark distributes the cartoonall over the world, except, of course, in the good ol' USA. The goal ofour campaign is to show Hallmark there is a demand for He-Man and She-Ra inthe United States, and that selling the rights to an American broadcasterwould be a profitable venture. Here's the schedule of events for thecampaign:
On Tuesday, September 16:
Everyone, please
send two "snail mail" letters to Hallmark
Entertainment. This way, they'll arrive with our e-mails on Friday. The address
is:
Hallmark Entertainment
1325 Avenue of the Americas
21st floor
New York, NY 10019
If you would like to telephone Hallmark, and express your support forHe-Man and She-Ra's return, please call: (212) 977-9001.
On Friday, September 19:
Please send one (you heard me, 1!) e-mail to Hallmark expressing yourdesire to have He-Man and She-Ra on American television. Their e-mailaddress is info@hallmark.com. Some people went overboard with e-mails to Cartoon Network, so we're requesting that just one e-mail be sent by each He-Fan this time. This is a great way to let our voices be heard!
As you can see,
the third week in September will be a busy one for usHe-Fans. But, if you've
ever said, "Gee, ... I wish He-Man were ontelevision again," do
something about it! Join in our campaign and helprevive our favorite cartoons! As
always, look to Campaign Headquarters for the latest information on theHallmark
Campaign. The Web address is:
He-Man and She-Ra are back on the air, at least for some He-Fans!According to Eduardo Filardo Abaid (efilardo@raza.giga.com), there is anentire network that shows nothing but Masters of the Universe, She-Ra:Princess Of Power, and The New Adventures 24 hours a day, 7 days a week!
The bad news: That network can only be accessed via DSS, and it's notavailable world-wide.
I'll send more information on this as I receive it. Anyone interested ingetting copies of the shows dubbed in Spanish should contact Eduardo atefilardo@raza.giga.com.
For She-Ra fans, you're in luck if you live in the San Diego area!Khrystyna (SwiftAdora@aol.com) says that She-Ra comes on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 2:30 on Channel 12 in Spanish.
[Create-A-Character]
Miles Jasem (nmeadows@gorge.net) sent me some more information on theFearless Photog contest Mattel sponsored in 1985.
The
winning entry to the Masters of The Universe "Create A Character"Contest was named "Fearless PHOTOG",
not Photon. He was submitted byNathan Bitner, (then) age 11, of Napierville,
Illinois.
From Sunday, December 8, 1985, when the five finalists were announced, through Friday, December 13, the heroic, camera-headed Photog beat out somepretty stiff (and strange) competition to achieve this singular honor;NETTA, a female character made entirely of entangling rope netting,COMPACTOR, a suction cup-studded villain with a crushing vice waist, EYEBEAM, a heroic giant eyeball with arms and legs, and BRAINWAVE, agray-skinned mental mystic with an enormous, turban-like brain with a jewelin the center.
When Fearless Photog failed to show in stores the next year, I referred tothe contest's rules (printed with the contest's announcement in the Sundaycomics section, September 8, 1985). They state:
"The
Winning Entry will be made into an actual Toy!!!"
The
operative word being "an". Apparantly,
this Nathan Bitner received aone-of-a-kind prototype of his creation,
Fearless Photog. And the rest ofus? Oh, well, it was still a cool
contest.
I ran a contest to create an original figure in issue 5, and I'm stronglyconsidering having another one since the readership has grown so large(quickly approaching 2,000 at this point). If you're interested in sendingme a drawing or photo of your drawing or completed figure, e-mail me so Ican get an idea of how many people plan on participating. If there'senough interest, there'll be a contest next issue.
BTW, I think I've tracked down Nathan Bitner. :) If I'm able to get intouch with him, I'll have some more info on the Fearless Photog next issue.

[File Attachment]
This is probably the best file attachment yet because it doesn't take anytime to download. :) (Okay, so it's not technically a file attachment...)
Anyway, in the next part of the newsletter, I talk about some projects wecan do until the show gets back on the air. Here's something from one ofthose possible projects: a cover of the He-Man theme by David Karig(dkarig@clemson.edu)! To listen to it, you need RealAudio 3.0 or the RealPlayer 4.0. You can download the RealPlayer from http://www.real.com, and you can listen to Dave's cover at http://www.west.ga.net/~eternia/He-man/archive/sounds/he-man.ram.
It's streaming, so there are no download times at all! :)
[Classifieds]
This is by far the most popular part of the newsletter, which kind ofbothers me a little bit. :/ If you'd like to put an ad in here (for free,of course), e-mail me it... BTW, I take no responsibility for any claimsmade in this section.
* TRADING:
Looking to trade loose figures in very good/excellent condition. E-mailidiot@interlog.comd for more info.
Stridor without tail or head gear...good shape, still has all stickers onit and tail gun. Make offer. - Shickboy@aol.com
[Projects]
Right now, it doesn't look like He-Man and She-Ra will be back on the airanytime soon in the United States. While I think it's great that so manypeople are working to get the shows back on the air, there are things wecan do to occupy ourselves in the meantime. :)
* VIDEO TAPES
One of the questions I'm asked most frequently is if I will copy videos forpeople. I don't have the time or the equipment, unfortunately, to helppeople out.
The officially released videos are out of print, so I don't have any qualmsabout copying. There may be more legal issues than that, though, and ifthere are, please tell me so. :)
Anyway, I figured that a tape tree would be the best way to help outourselves and everyone else interested in getting copies...
This description of a tape tree was taken from the rec.music.gdead FAQ:
What is a Tape Tree and how does it work?
Somebody
offers a tape(seed). Someone volunteers to be theadministrator
of the tree, and thus "run" it. If the administrator is notgoing to be the "root", it's a good idea to know who will be ahead of time,or find someone who is willing to be. After consultation with the seed, theadministrator posts a message to the net soliciting applications to be onthe tree. The first person(root) (maybe the offerer, maybe theadministrator, maybe not) who actually gets the seed tape makes up to 5copies and sends them out to 5 people (branches), each of those people makeup to 5 copies and send them out to either other branches, or to leaves(who make no copies), etc., until everybody who signed up gets a copy. Theperson structuring the tree ("administrator") may or may not be the personwho provides the original tape ("seed") or the person who makes the initial5 copies ("root"). To get on, you send mail to the administrator followinga posting. When on, you make up to 5 tapes for people below you (if you'rea "branch"), or none (if you're a "leaf").
You send the person above youeither other tapes in trade, or blanks
if you can't trade. IMHO, iftrading, each person pays postage one
way. If sending blanks, you paypostage both ways.
For most current or recent shows, the seed usually provides a DAT tape, and therefore it's a good idea for the root to have DAT capabilities aswell, thus enabling most people to get high quality, low-generation analogs.
There is no payment for this service, ever. Don't do business with anyone who wants payment for taping. Most heads are only too happy to make copies for anyone who asks.
Q: I don't have two decks (or a dual deck). Can I still be on the tape tree without making copies for other people?
A:
If you cannot make copies for others you are considered a "leaf" onthe tree, and will be assigned to a "branch" of
the tree, that is, someonewho can make copies.
Q: Does it matter if I have a dubbing cassette deck instead of twoseparate decks for making copies?
A: Many dubbing decks are cheap and do not do a good job on qualitywhen making a copy of a tape, partly because the consumer companies don'tthink people will notice the difference...NOT. Tapeheads are audiophiles. The reason you are on a tree is: 1) You REALLY want the shows and, 2) Youwant the best possible quality tape you can get for a free recording. There ARE dubbing decks out there that do a good job, but cost more and areusually worth it (bothSony and Denon make good high-end dubbing decks). Ifyou have a dubbing deck, NEVER, repeat, NEVER use the high speed dub when you aremaking a copy for someone. Why? You will reduce the quality of the tape, for the person you are making it for and any copies they will make. Always make the best quality tapes you can with the equipment you have on hand.
When a tree is started the administrator will want to know whatequipment you have (brand, type, number of heads, etc...). Thisinformation is needed so that when the administrator sets up the tree everyone gets the best possible recording they can get, no matter what typeof equipment you may have.
Q: What should I set my recording levels at?
A: Recording levels are really a function of the deck and the type of tape being used. For instance, you can probably set the peaks at+5 dB for metal tapes, but at +3 dB for high bias tapes. The key here isto KNOW YOUR DECK. The suggestion is to try different tapes and choose theone that works best with your deck. My preference for recording tapes(depending on the source) are the new Maxell XLIIS tapes.
Q: If you miss the request cuttoff date for the tree, is there any way to get on the tree?
A: In general, no. You can try sending mail to somebody who's makingfewer than 5 copies, and ask if he'll make you one. Often, the treeadministrator will indicate people who've offered to make more copies thanthey've been assigned. You'll probably have better luck doing this if youoffer to trade.
Q: When everybody trades tapes on the net, what is the customary way everybody does this?
A: Generally, by trade. You offer a tape to somebody and ask for a list of what you can get in return, and choose something. If youare going to be doing a lot of trading, you should get on the tapeheadmailing list (send mail to tape-heads-request@fuggles.acc.virginia.edu and ask to be added to thatlist). Also common on the net is a posting requesting a tape of aparticular show, and offering to trade from your collection of hours oftapes, or offering blanks if you cant make tapes.
Of course, that description is for audio cassettes, but the same can beapplied to videos too. To get this off the ground, we need anadministrator. If you're interested in heading this project (seriousrequests only; this is a massive undertaking!!!), e-mail me... I reallywould like to see a tape tree come about.
* MUSIC
I'm a part of a very terrible band, but even though Bereft isn't thatgreat, we've still been invited to participate in a couple of compilationalbums. I thought it would be interesting to try and get the musicians onthe list (I'm submitting a song, and you'd have to be *really* bad to beworse than me) to record songs from and inspired by the shows. I'vealready gotten one submission from David Karig (dkarig@clemson.edu), whoplayed a slightly slowed down version of the He-Man theme song on hisguitar. I'm probably going to record something about Orko or Trolla...
The only problem with this is we need someone to collect the songs andpeople to duplicate them. Considering the massively large number of peopleon the list, we'll probably need a tape tree, like I described above, toget this project going. If you're interested in leading this project, please e-mail me.
* COMIC BOOK
I've seen a lot of people post fan art (and I've sent several pieces alongwith the newsletters over the past year), and a few people have discussedcreating a comic book for He-Fans with new tales...
This is another project I'd love to contribute to, and I think this wouldbe a lot of fun for everyone... We need someone to collect the art, haveit printed in some way, and mail it to everyone interested. If you'd liketo head up this project, e-mail me.
Seeing any of these projects to completion will take a lot of work, butit'll be worth it when it's all over. :-)
