Hello, and welcome to the 16th issue of the Scrolls of Grayskull, the onlynewsletter dedicated to He-Man and She-Ra.
I'm running low of content, so if you could keep sending me story ideas,I'd really appreciate it. I can be reached by e-mail at ctyner@awod.com
If you need to unsubscribe for any reason, e-mail ctyner@cs.clemson.eduwith "Unsubscribe" as
the subject and I'll remove you from the list. Ifyou plan on cancelling your
e-mail account, please e-mail me. I hategetting bounced mail.
Enjoy the newsletter, and talk to you next month!
[Listserv Request]
I'm really getting desperate. With 2,000 members, sending out thenewsletter the way I have been for the past year and a half is gettingincreasingly difficult. If any of you have listserv or majordomo access, please e-mail me so I can have a real mailing list set up for the Scrollsof Grayskull!
[Changes]
I'm strongly considering dropping file attachments and sending out just oneletter to make distributing the newsletter easier on my end. If you'dreally like me to keep sending out file attachments, tell me and I'll seewhat I can do.
I'm adding a 'reader's mail' section next issue, so if there's a letteryou'd like to have published in the newsletter, e-mail me and I'll include it.
Also, for those of you who are new to the list or missed an issue, ScottWhite (Cringer), who has his own He-Man and She-Ra web pages, is now maintaining the newsletter archives and has everything up to date now. You can see his work at http://www.geocities.com/Hollywood/3624/archive.html.
[Create-A-Character Contest]
I've gotten a lot of positive response to the suggestion I made last issueabout having a contest to see who can create the best original He-Mancharacter. Here are the official rules:
The contest begins today (Saturday, September 13, 1997), and will end onmidnight, Wednesday, October 15, 1997.
Create a character any way you want. You can draw it on paper, make amodel out of clay, render something with 3D software, or customize anexisting figure. Whatever you do, just make sure I can get it on mycomputer somehow. :) I own a handheld scanner, so if you send me adrawing or a photo, I can scan it in for you. It's small, so whatever yousend me needs to be 4 inches wide or less. E-mail me at ctyner@awod.com ifyou need me to scan something, and I'll send you my snail mail address. Ifyou have a scanner or created your character on your computer, e-mail meyour picture.
All pictures will be posted on my homepage. Voting will be done by membersof the Guardians of Grayskull mailing list (seehttp://www.he-man.org/ctyner/scrolls.html for more info), andfinal results will be announced by the end of October.
As you probably
remember, in Mattel's "Create A Character Contest",
thecompany actually made a figure of the winning design. I don't have theresources
to pull that off, but aside from being the envy of many He-Fans,your design
will be drawn by Mark Farinas, who did the great art on KevinHebert's web
page (http://www.seas.gwu.edu/student/kmhebert/heman.html).
I encourage all of you to enter! :)
NOTE: Will the person that sent me the Clixon Odyssey figure e-mail me yourfull name and e-mail address? Sorry; I saved your message, but Eudora Prodoesn't save headers, unfortunately.
[Campaign]
From Zadoc Angell (angellaz@norwich.net):
HALLMARK CAMPAIGN!!!!!!!!!
D'oh! Did you forget? Well, it's not too late to help get He-Man andShe-Ra back on the air! Although the Hallmark Campaign has alreadystarted, you can still send letters and e-mails to reinforce our unifiedmessage! Here's all you have to do:
Send two "snail mail" letters
to Hallmark Entertainment. The address is:
Hallmark Entertainment
1325 Avenue of the Americas
21st floor
New York, NY 10019
If you would like to telephone Hallmark, and express your support forHe-Man and She-Ra's return, please call: (212) 977-9001.
On Friday, September 19:
Please send one (you heard me, 1!) e-mail to Hallmark expressing yourdesire to have He-Man and She-Ra on American television. Their e-mailaddress is info@hallmark.com. Some people went overboard with e-mails toCartoon Network, so we're requesting that just one e-mail be sent by eachHe-Fan this time. This is a great way to let our voices be heard!
Perhaps our efforts will prove to Hallmark that there is a demand in theUnited States for He-Man and She-Ra. They show our favorite cartoonseverywhere else in the Western hemisphere, so why not here?
I hope you'll join us! It's never too late to help He-Man and She-Ra return!

[Why He-Man Isn't Back On?]
I received this letter from Brent Crane (brent@livenet.net), who seems tohave found an explanation for why He-Man isn't on the air.
I found out
the reason why He-Man isn't coming back yet. It's because former music
writers for He-Man, Haim Saban & Shuki Levy (whoown Saban Entertainment, creator of The Power Rangers) bought Filmationback in 1989 and have He-Man in their huge vault of cartoons. But recently,Saban & Fox bought the Virginia based Family Channel to turn it to a 24hours kids channel, and Saban is gonna open their vault for this newchannel. He-Man does have a chance of return to TV through Saban & Fox. Ihave been a He-Man fan since I was little, but now I am a huge PowerRangers fan. When I found out their connection, through Saban Iinvestigated to find if they might own He-Man because they have such a large vault of cartoons. So that should answer why Ted Turner can't get it on the Cartoon Network. I hopethis information helps & good
luck on your newsletter.
I've done some digging myself, and I found out that Saban Ent. haspurchased the Family Channel. However, it is known that Hallmark Ent. hasthe domestic rights to He-Man. I'm not sure if Saban has joint rights withHallmark, though. Anyway, this is something to look for. :)
[Audio Tapes]
Suzy Pota (shy_violet@hotmail.com)
sent me e-mail about how some Big Lots and Odd Lots stores (and possibly
'Itz a Deal') are selling He-Man audio cassettes for $1. She mentioned "Secret of the Sword" by
name, so if oneof these stores are near you, that might be something to look
for.
(BTW, I know this is true because a friend of mine bought one a little overa year ago from a Big Lots store. :)
[Tape Tree]
Last month, I mailed the list about setting up a tape tree so people who'dlike episodes can get them easily without spending an insane amount ofmoney. I've gotten a couple of responses, and if you have several VCRs orwould like to contribute material, e-mail me at ctyner@awod.com
I included some information on the Locomotion DSS network that is airingHe-Man and She-Ra that Eduardo Filardo Abaid (efilardo@raza.giga.com) sentme, and here's some more information on it.
Locomotion, which is only available in Latin America, airs only superherocartoons, dubbed in Spanish. Other shows that Locomotion airs includeTeenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Flash Gordon (Filmation), Defenders of theEarth, Phantom 2040, Thundercats, and Silver Hawks. He-Man and She-Ra air3 times a day, and each episode is different!
To contact Locomotion, e-mail webmaster@cisneros.com with
the subject"Sugerencias Para Locomotion" or "Suggestions For Locomotion".
Locomotionis owned by Grupo Cisneros, a Venezuelan company. Eduardo suggested
thatwe make a petition to Grupo Cisneros to have these cartoons aired inAmerica.
This is something that's worth looking into!
[The Movie Adaptation]
Matthew Martin (mlmartin@coe.edu)
is constantly posting informative articles to the Guardians of Grayskull
mailing list, and I save some of hisbest material for the newsletter. Here's
a thorough run-down of the StarComics movie adaptation of the "Masters of the Universe".
"Well, I just thought that I'd note something about the MotU movie. Ipurchased the comic book adaptation of the movie when Marvel (maybe theStar subsidiary, maybe the company directly) released it inAugust/September '87, and I noticed some differences. The main changesfrom the final version are in the beginning and the ending. The comicopens with a shot of a burning city, with people fleeingand a translucent picture of Skeletor's face in the background. There's acool narration here, but I'm doing this from memory and don't recall muchof it. It continues with Teela (drawn as the toy version, not the movie orthe cartoon) moving through that war-torn city, searching for her unit. She meets up with Duncan, who expresses more paternal empathy in that onescene than he ever does in the whole movie. They discuss the situation(mostly what we already know from the scene where they meet up with He-Man)and then Teela says that they can make a last stand at Castle Grayskull.Duncan replies: "Teela...Skeletor's
forces took the castle overan hour ago.
"After a version
of the scene that opens the movie, we move to anEternian family fleeing the
war. Their wagon breaks, and I think that
itpins their son underneath it. As things look grim, who should arrivebut...
He-Man!
"He-Man spends a moment talking to the refugees, and then hears thesounds of a struggle, which lead into the Gwildor scene. The only majordifference at this point is that they don't go to Gwildor's lab, and He-Manremembers the secret passage to Grayskull from his youth. From there onout, things don't change much until the end. The first scene with Kevinand Julie is in the cemetery, so we don't get the annoying andhero-degrading scene at the fast food joint. There are some scenes added(when the group drives away from Julie's house, He-Man or Duncan says:"There's a lot I'd like to know about this world" with
a cool look at anAmerican flag in the foreground--important later). The scene
where themercenaries return to Eternia is deleted, so Saurod survives.
"After the confrontation
with Skeletor on Earth, things really take a turn. He-Man is left behind
with the rest, and Skeletor returns to
Eternia--butdoes not appear to receive the powers of Greyskull. We get to
see Gwildoropen a hole in the Sorceress's force field, and see her heal Julie
andsomeone else (who I can't recall, but someone had been wounded). A lot
ofthe Lubic subplot is cut out, and he doesn't seem to be played as comedy
asmuch (which seemed to happen during the last act of the film).
"After Gwildor
steals the Cosmic Key from Skeletor (who tries to use it toescape), the Lord
of Destruction flees to the roof, and He-Man
chases him.
"The two of them
engage in a sword fight atop Grayskull, and Skeletorfeigns surrender and
knocks He-Man off of the roof and into a precariousposition
on the face of the castle. Skeletor proclaims himself Master ofthe Universe,
but is knocked off by a thrown rock. (It looks like Evil-Lynthrew it, although
the artwork is unclear.) He-Man catches Skeletor...
"He-Man: "Don't
worry, Skeletor, I've got you. We've been fighting toolong, Skeletor. The
war is over. We can make peace, we can rebuildtogether."
"Skeletor: "Keep
your peace! Keep your mercy!"
"He then throws
himself off of Grayskull.
"The end of the
movie stays more or less as is, with one major change:Man-at-Arms comes up
from the castle basement with an American flag
datedfrom the 21st or 22nd century--a relic of the first Eternian settlers. This
helps tie the Terran plot to Eternia and sets up the use of the keyfor time
travel.
"Other minor notes:
--Skeletor instructs the mercenaries to spare Gwildor, not He-Man.
--At the first
confrontation, He-Man tells Skeletor: "You
don't wantEternia. You won't know what to do with it once
you have it. This battleis between you and me."
--Instead of confronting her parents, Julie steals the stuff and buriesit out back.
"Final
conclusions: I'm inclined to believe that this was a final ornear-final
draft of the movie, changed only at the last
moments. It'spaced so much
better, cuts a lot of silly scenes and clunky exposition(such as the
bit in Gwildor's lab) and fills in holes that are missing inthe final
cut.
"Does anyone
know how to track down a copy of this film's 'official'script? I'd love
to get my hands on it."
If you have a copy of the original script, e-mail Matthew at mlmartin@coe.edu.
[Petition]
I've had a lot of people ask me how the action figure petition I started isgoing, and we're quickly approaching 1,000 names. Once I get 1,000, I'mgoing to submit it. It shouldn't take more than a couple of weeks...
This is the smallest classifieds section that I've had for months! Ifyou'd like to submit an ad, e-mail me and I'll add it in for free. BTW, Ican't accept responsibility for any claims made in this section.
