Welcome to issue 23 of the Scrolls of Grayskull newsletter! Next month, the newsletter turns 2 years old, and I have a pretty exciting project I'mgoing to announce next month to celebrate. The past couple of years havebeen a lot of fun, and I hope you've been enjoying these newsletters asmuch as I've enjoyed putting them together. I'd love to hear your commentsand suggestions - my e-mail address is ctyner@awod.com
For the past few issues of the Scrolls, I've been including articles byMatthew Martin (mlmartin@coe.edu) trying to make sense of the many MOTUcontinuity conflicts. Jacob Borshard (garbagepailkids@hotmail.com) sent me this message in regard to this:
Hello,
I would appreciate if the following could be posted on the Scrolls of Grayskull. I am not attacking anyone personally, but feel that the following opinion should be establihed...
I feel that working to create solid continuity out of Masters of theUniverse is a waste of time.
This obviously was never a concern of Mattel or Filmation, and the only ones who care are odd fans that take He-man too seriously and are apparently blind to all of the campy, cheesy, and just plain dumb elements that make He-man so beautiful and wonderful.
It is offensive that the live action MOTU film will be considered anything but complete crap. It was a terrible film in every way, and ignoring how dismal it was just because it has Masters of the Universe in the title is defeating your own purpose.
The sad thing about trekkies is that they don't see why it is that they're complete losers. (Don't get me wrong, I love trekkies.) I wouldhate for the same thing to happen to fans of He-man.
Please appreciate He-man for what it is and was; a campy and silly, brilliant and horribly animated cartoon that functioned as an extendedcommercial for a well designed and artfully sculpted line of toys, whichhelped shape and influence a generation of cereal eating junior consumers.
Of course, this is just my opinion. Others are welcomed to add tothis argument, and let me know your opinions.
Thanks,
Scare Glow, a very rare figure to find, is the "Ghost" or "Shadow" ofSkeletor. Scare Glow did not appear in the cartoon series. The best waythat I can describe the Scare Glow character is that he is the "constantand burning voice that hounds Skeletor and makes him evil" (although themini-comic that accompanied the figure does not mention this). It wassuggested to me years ago by a Mattel rep. that Scare Glow is "the futureof what Skeletor is to become once his total death is finalized". Skeletor, according to this Mattel rep., was an Eternian man that was condemned byThe Elders to a slow death due to his evil ways, thus explaining hishalf-human body and skull face. Skeletor, aspart of this punishment would become a sorrowed entity that would bereminded (and guided) by the "Ghost" or "Shadow" of a long defeatedmaniacal villian from the days of The Elders that would haunt and tormenthis mind. If, by some chance that Skeletor could ever prove himself worthyof redemption by changing his ways, he would be free of the punishment setforth by The Elders. Another scenario is that Skeletor could surviveforever if he obtained both halves of the Power Sword(s), although only ashis familiar Skeletor form. The final, and "somewhat official" reasoningbehind Scare Glow is that Skeletor, unable to revert his evil ways, unableto prove himself worthy to The Elders and unable to defeat He-Man andobtain both halves of the Power Sword(s) eventually will die and his"Ghost" or "Shadow" (the constant and burning voice that hounds Skeletorand makes him evil) would be released. According tho this person, ScareGlow and Skeletor ARE NOT one, and that the reason that Skeletor will failis that Scare Glow is intentionally trying to be released, therefore heconstantly hounds Skeletor's mind with evil thoughts and makes Skeletorforget important details that could help in his battles to obtain theSword(s). In other words, when Skeletor dies Scare Glow takes a "physicalform" and
becomes the leader of the forces of evil. In the meantime,Skeletor
is hounded by the spirit (Scare Glow) until the time that spiritcan
become a physical force to be reckoned with. If anyone else
has anyother explanations that they know of, please correct
me, as this is onlywhat was explained to me when I called Mattel
years ago when I got ScareGlow as a b-day gift. (I too was
unimpressed by the lack of information onthe character which
prompted me to call Mattel).
[This Month's Attachment]
This month's attachment is a hilarious picture from an issue of Toyfarethat was sent to me by Stefan Flincker (FlinckerV8@aol.com). The file nameis Toyfare1.jpg, and if you receive the text-only version of thenewsletter, you can view it at the Scrolls archives athttp://www.west.ga.net/~eternia/He-man/archive/archive.html
Fang-Man (from "The Time Corridor): A Tung Lashor figure painted
blue. Itwould need a brown (I think) jacket with a golden or
black belt. TungLashor's hands would't really look good on the
figure so you could useprobably use Webstor's. He had spikes
on the back or something likethat...probably from cardboard or
thick paper. I wouldn't get into toomuch detail (the eyes and
so on) 'cause belive me, it'll take forever...
Strongarm: One Extendar figure - take the thing in front of his mouth off, paint him red with blue (I don't remember the colours exactly) and where it extends you would probably need to glue something... I don't know, a piece of balloon maybe. The rest of the body has to be painted. The body would look a bit 'wide' but...
[Action Figure Survey]
Scott White (Cringer) suggested that I take a survey and ask what He-Man and She-Ra characters that appeared in the comics, the cartoon, and stories (including fan-written stories) should've been made into figures, but weren't. Possible choices include Strongarm, Fang Man, Lizard Man, and many others. :)
E-mail me your top 3 choices (in order of preference, please) to me atctyner@awod.com. The results will appear in next month's issue.
[Quake II Conversion]
Here's an interesting project that Brett Schofield(GJBJSSCHOFIELD@onaustralia.com.au) suggested. I'd love to see something like this come to fruition...
Congratulations on a great newsletter and website. I have been a MOTU fansince I was a kid, and your web presence is all that keeps me updated.Anyways, I am a member of the Mandalorian Wars for Jedi Knight(http://www.captured.manowar/) and have begun editing for Quake II. And Ihave a project...
MASTERS of the UNIVERSE
for Quake 2
Yes, what I intend to do is create an episode for Quake 2 based on He-Manand the Masters of the Universe. Imagine battling Skeletor one-on-one onthe parapets of Castle Grayskull? I'm thinking there will be:
* new levels (Grayskull, Snake Mountain etc..)
* new weapons (power punch, sword of power, battleaxe...)
* new enemies and bosses (Skeletor, Beastman etc..)
and more!!!
I would be very grateful if you could include in your next newsletter orwebsite, or perhaps even mail all your subscribers about this project. Imlooking for anyone that can edit Quake 2 in any way, ideas on what shouldbe in the conversion etc. I need pictures of enemies (not specificcharacters, but enemies He-Man faces in great numbers) and bosses(Merman...) plus locations for levels and anything else your readers mighthave.
I would love for this project to be completed and out there for all Quakeand MOTU fans alike to enjoy. All, thoughts, ideas and comments should bemailed to GJBJSSCHOFIELD@onaustralia.com.au or mrace46@hotmail.com
Thanks for your time
Mr ACE (Brett Schofield)
