[Introduction]

I've been building up to this for a while, and I'm proud to say that as ofthis issue, the Scrolls of Grayskull is officially 2 years old. It's beena lot of fun doing this, and although it's kind of embarassing to look atsome of those older, awful issues, I'm glad there are so many of you thatare enjoying it too. I tried to make this newsletter stand out a bit fromthe rest in content, and I'd love to hear what you think. Also, yoursuggestions for future newsletters would be greatly appreciated. You cane-mail me at ctyner@he-man.org.

I also appreciate all of you that signed the letter to Mattel, which hasbeen sent off. I'm proud to say that from Jan. 1997 to Jan. 1998, over1,200 responses were sent to me. The final copy has 974 names, and anyresponse I get from Mattel will be sent to the list immediately.

[My Site's Moved!]

After 2.5 years at one server, my site has moved! Not only that, but I'veadded a lot of content too. The new URL is http://www.he-man.org/ctyner/,so please update your links and bookmarks.

L.E. Bryce's fan fic page has moved as well, tohttp://www.he-man.org/ctyner/fan-fic.html

Many thanks to Jason Moore (jason@hypenet.com) for making all of this possible. Expect to hear a lot more from www.he-man.org in the future!

[Figure Customization Contest]

To celebrate the 2nd anniversary of this newsletter, I'm kicking off a newcontest! Break out your paintbrush, old figures, and crazy glue becausethis contest involves customizing MOTU/POP figures into new creations. There are two categories:

1) Best New Figure - If you'd like, take a look at the section below("Survey Responses") or at the "Honors Of Grayskull" awards (a fileattachment) for suggestions on figures many fans would like to see.

2) Best Repaint/Best Redone Figure - If you're more interested inrepainting a figure, or if you'd like to modify a figure (just asThunderpunch He-Man was a modification of the He-Man figure and DragonBlaster Skeletor was a modification of Skeletor), this category mayinterest you.

RULES:

- Please try to limit yourself to modifying _only_ MOTU/POP figures.

- No more than 3 submissions in each category will be accepted per person.

- I need at least one picture of your figure. If you don't have a scanner,e-mail me and I'll see what I can do about getting it scanned.

- All submissions must be received by August 1, 1998. Voting will be doneby members of the Scrolls of Grayskull list and members of the Guardians ofGrayskull list. Winners will be announced in the September issue of theScrolls of Grayskull.

If you have any other questions, e-mail me and I'll do my best to answer them.

In case you're wondering, the standard Create-A-Character contest (whereyou can draw a character instead of customizing a figure) will still beoccurring later this year (I'll probably announce it in September).

[Survey Reponses]

Last month, I asked what figures should've been released that weren't.Anything was game, including characters from the cartoon, mini-comics,books, and even fan-fiction. I assigned 3 points to each person's mostdesired figure, 2 points for the second most desired, and 1 point to thethird most desired. Here is how things turned out:

First place - Scorpia: 18 points
Second place - Queen Marlena: 14 points
Third place - Adora: 11 points

Other popular characters were Shadow Weaver, Granamyr, Goat Man (whichsurprised me), Madame Razz, Sea Hawk, and Lizard Man (another surprise).

[Customizing Tips]

If you don't know where to start for the figure customizing contest, hereare some more tips from Andy Munteanu (andymunteanu@hotmail.com).

Karg: One Mer-Man fig., one roll of black tape, one small hook, a can (spray) of silver paint, one front Fisto/Clamp-Champ armor, black plastic bag for the cape, one right Roboto arm, and one cotton ball for hair.

Lizard-Man: You'd need a Saurod figure for the basics. The armor should be smoothened up. The head wouldn't be the best so you'd have to get rid of it. I think a Kobra Kahn head would look good on it. The rest of the body should be painted with the right colours (D-UH!).

[Watching Television]

A He-Fan recently recommended "Watching Television: A Pantheon Guide ToPopular Culture" to me (edited by Todd Gitlin), and there's a very largesection on He-Man and She-Ra in there ("The Shortcake Strategy" by TomEngelhardt). It comes highly recommended!

[Notes From The Historian's Desk]

Last issue's letter from Jacob Borshard sparked a lot of response. Ithought I'd include this letter from Matthew Martin (mlmartin@coe.edu)detailing his thoughts on the matter.

Last month, some questions were raised about the Continuity Resolution articles that I've been doing for the mailing list and the newsletter. While Mr. Borshard and I have clarified things over private e-mail, I'd like to make a public statement about the issue as well.

These articles started when I finally came up with a way to put together the disparate Skeletor origins into a single story. A few months later, I decided to try to find some way to put the rest of the continuity together with as little folding, spindling, or mutilating as possible. "Merging Oldand New" and "Final Unification" came from that plan.

I did this primarily as a way to have fun with the MotU mythos. I'm the kind of person who likes nice, well-ordered universes, and I wanted to try and explain some of the contradictions. I also took advantage of it to play with some ideas I had regarding the MotUverse. Basically, look at these articles like one part historical essay and four parts alternative fanfic.

I encourage everyone not to take this too seriously. I'm not trying to push 'one true continuity' here; there are numerous elements of these articles that I don't care for that much myself. (The New Adventures as the final act in the saga doesn't appeal to me at all.) Instead, I'm just trying to see how much we can fit together before it starts falling apart.

So, to those of you who have enjoyed and supported the Continuity Resolution articles, thank you. To those of you who don't, I'm sorry, but look at them in the light they were written.

   Matthew L. Martin

[Revamp]

Here is the latest installment of "Revamp", by RunJT@aol.com.

Hand over hand he scaled the rock ledge. Each muscle, tired and worn, strained to pull him to the next crack or protrusion. His skin scared andfrom battles past and blood dripping from conflicts still burning. It hasbeen one year since Adam was lead to Grayskull, frustrated and angry, byZoar. It was there that Sorceress gave him his destiny, cast in the form asword. Since then Adam has struggled to define his role as He-Man. TheSorceress has not given Adam such power without wanting something inreturn. When the two halves of the sword are united He-Man can unlock anancient power to return to his world. Upon reaching a ledge He-Man pausesbriefly to observe the progress of his companion, Man-At-Arms. While one of the most intelligent men on Eternia, the middle aged man is not as physically competent as He-Man. If not for the sword Mer-Man drove through He-Man's foot hours before, or the broken ribs courtesy of Faker He-Man would be a half a days journey ahead of his old friend.

Carefully maneuvering around the ledge He-Man found a path, something rare in the rocky peaks bordering the waste lands. A visitor awaits him there. The ground is scorched were the ghostly figure stands, red armor faintly glowing against his black suit. The only sign of anything human is his pale chin falling from the bottom of his helmet.

"I have no time for any diversions Zodac. If Skeletor has sent you tokill me, you won't succeed. I must reach Grayskull."

"My purpose is not to serve evil, nor is it for good. I maintain balance He-Man. I don't expect your mind to comprehend. I can help you understand this, Teela, Man-E-Faces, and Stratos have made their way to Grayskull. Skeletor and his allies have slide through the dimensional portal to join them. Listen to me or they die."

Man-At-Arms joined the two atop the ledge. Zodac pointed west to a peakextending far into the clouds.

"Point Dread awaits you there. Perched atop is the last of a fleet ofTalon Fighters. In the great war they were the fastest machine in the sky,it will take you to Grayskull." Touching his hand to Man-At-Arms Zodacleft a small burn on his temple. "Man-At-Arms will fly the ship."

"Strange, He-Man, I know how to operate but this Point Dread is in theopposite direction of Grayskull."

"I'm afraid there is no choice friend. The only times we have been able to locate Grayskull is when the Sorceress has brought us and even so thetrip is to far. Our trust must rely on Zodac if we want to reach there intime."
