No, I haven't died or forgotten... ;-) Sorry for the (seeming) lack ofactivity -- I haven't updated my web site in a while, and I've put thisnewsletter off for a while. For a couple of weeks, finals and variouscollege projects ate up most of my time, and since getting out for break,I've been working on the early stages of a new He-Man project (more detailson that next month, hopefully) and a number of other web sites. But atlong last, I made myself sit down and write this, and I hope you find itworth the wait. If I haven't responded to your e-mail or scanned somethingfor you, I promise that I'll take care of it soon.
Also, this may very well be the last newsletter you see signed solely byme. Other people in the on-line He-Man community, such as Matt R.(http://www.he-man.org/guides), are going to join in writing the Scrollswith me, making this more of a collaborative effort rather than thecutting-and-pasting hack job it currently is. ;-)
Finally, I'd like to mention that this month, my He-Man site celebratesTHREE long years of life on the 'net. Thanks to everyone who's made thispossible, and I think you'll be very impressed by what I (and others) haveplanned for 1999.
I really would
appreciate it if you'd send me feedback. This newsletter isfor you, so please
send your comments, suggestions, etc. to me at adam@he-man.org.
I apologize for the small size of this issue, buthopefully the next issue
will be larger (and better).
Okay, admittedly, calling this Create-A-Character '98 is a bit of a poordescription since there are only a couple of weeks left in 1998, but Ididn't want to miss a year. ;-)
The title of this contest is basically the best description -- all you haveto do is create an original character any way you want! If you want tosketch it, mold it out of clay or plastic, render something on yourcomputer, or customize an existing figure...whatever works best for you isfine with me. The only restriction is that you have to find some way ofsending me a picture. If you have a scanner, send me a picture (preferablyin JPEG format) at ctyner@he-man.org. Otherwise, e-mail me and I'll giveyou my snail mail address where you can me mail your photo. If you wantyour photo back, please include return postage.
I would appreciate it if you wouldn't send more than 10 entries; bear inmind that voting will be done by entry rather than by author, so if yousubmit too much, you actually end up hurting your chances of winning. Also, people who created *original* characters for the Figure Customizingcontest earlier this year -- you can resubmit your figures for thiscontest. I still have all those pictures, so just send me an e-mail withyour name and the figures you want to enter.
The contest officially begins today (Thursday, December 17, 1998) and willend on midnight, January 18, 1999. All pictures received by then will beposted on my homepage, and I'll send the URL to that page in the nextnewsletter. Voting will be done (optionally, of course) by members of boththe Scrolls of Grayskull and the Guardians of Grayskull mailing lists.(Voting will be conducted through e-mail since the cheating in the lastpoll drove me nuts.) Final results will be announced at the end of January.
I encourage all of you to enter! :)
[Odyssey - He-Man May Be Back Sooner Than We Thought!]
Rodney Huffman (crh@ecsis.net) reports that He-Man *may* be returning tothe air soon.
I have gotten a few e-mails stating that Hallmark is in negociations withthe Odyssey channel, and Odyssey is going under a program change (like FoxFamily) in March 99. They might air He-Man and She-Ra and other Filmationshows. Here's the first message I got:
"I
recently spoke to a Hallmark Entertaiment Rep. concerning thedistribution
rights for several Filmation cartoons that I have been tryingto
find. During
our conversation I asked about the Hallmark/Odyssey Channel hook-up. He said
that the toons that are owned byHallmark will be aired on their channel.
He named He-Man and She-raspecifically as two that would be re-aired."
This may or may not be true but I am checking into it myself! Althoughthis might be another rumor, I am getting alot of e-mails about this fromCybertOOn fans that have recently contacted Hallmark. I haven't contactedthem in a while, so it might be true!
"As you know,
there was really no final episode of She-Ra; it sort of endedwith 'Swifty's
Baby.' If they did make a final episode of
She-Ra, what doyou think would happen in it?"
E-mail your responses to ctyner@he-man.org, along with any suggestions youhave for future questions. Your responses will be included in next month'snewsletter.
Last month's question, also from tommy_lop@hotmail.com,
was: "Suppose youhave the power to bring back He-Man or She-Ra, but you can only choose one-- what would be your decision and why?" I
was surprised that more peopledidn't support She-Ra. Here's what you had
to say:
CpnMess11@aol.com:
If I had the power to bring back either He-Man or She-Ra, it would have tobe He-Man because the characters and plots were much better.
Patrick Lacsina (proofrock@hotmail.com):
He-Man. Why? As a 6-year old American male, He-Man was the animatedguideline to becoming the perfect man. Strong, courageous, and virtuous -the ideal livng.
Jimmy Izu Kanashiro (jizu@sbs.gob.pe):
I would choose He-Man, obviously. He-Man is the original character. Hisadventures are classical. She-Ra is an interesting program, but it was morea copy than anything else. He-Man has great strength, a great power. ButShe-Ra can talk with animals, change her sword into rope and many otherthings. Too much power, too little originality.
Shawn Watkinson (shwatkin@kawartha.com):
For me, it could only be Masters of the Universe. She-Ra was a goodcartoon in its own right butthe characters never caught my interest or stayed in my heart the way thatHe-Man and the Masters of the Universe did. So if I could have one wish(and I have lobbied for it, I contacted Hallmark Inc since they are theowners of He-Man/She-Ra) it would be to restore Masters of the Universe tothe general airwaves.
Jamie Devall (stringray@mindspring.com):
He-Man is the logical choice, hands down. The He-Man show was thefoundation
of Masters of the Universe. She-Ra was, in essence, a spinoff. If He-Man were
brought back, there would be nothing that prevented She-Rafrom being a guest
star. Finally, I think we've already seen the resultsof She-Ra being chosen
over He-Man. It was unjust and ultimately put agreat show out of commission.
He-Man is more than just a "guest star."
