Well!
I've finally gotten back into the writing groove and I have a little update! Once again it's small, but I'm pecking away at the story lil by lil!
Part VI
Casta's first lesson passed without much ado. Senka was however impressed at how quickly Casta picked up on the charms Norwyn was teaching her. Senka thought to herself "she has learned these spells almost as quickly as I did". Casta most certainly had a latent talent, but she later learned from Norwyn it was to be expected from such a strong royal lineage as hers was. Norwyn did not seem to spend much time with shrinking spells, since Casta had learned them so quickly. It was only a few days time before they had moved on to engorging charms, then shape shifting objects. Senka knew they would spend quite awhile learning the metamorphosis charms, and so she asked Norwyn if she could be permitted some free time to explore the palace gardens during Casta's more intense lessons. Norwyn, who had retained his new jovial disposition, agreed, despite the fact that he did seem quite intent on working tirelessly with Casta, and only taking breaks for her benefit and no one else’s. Senka was amazed at this, not only because she was given the freedom to explore, but also because Norwyn actually trusted her not to cause trouble. Senka made an internal promise to herself and her teacher that she would not perform any spells unless they were absolutely necessary to ensure that she would continue to be allowed to go on these jaunts of exploration.
Since she was so intent on keeping her promise she also made sure that she only explored the garden, and did not venture into any other parts of the palace for fear they would be “forbidden”. The Mysticorian royal garden was indeed splendorous, and filled with innumerable types of flowers. Best of all she was thrilled to see that all these different types of flowers attracted a fine assortment of species of butterfly. But something else caught Senka's eye in her visits to the garden. Nearby were the stables where Rangeaux was stationed everyday, seeing to the kings steeds and cleaning the horses messes. Senka silently admired Rangeaux from a distance. She had a sudden and new feeling in her heart that she assumed must have been an illness, yet she could not draw herself away from spying on this young page. When it was time to return to help Norwyn in teaching Casta and for lessons of her own, she found herself torn between her leisure in the garden and her love of magic. Magic always won out of course, but only just barely.
Meanwhile Casta and Senka were becoming great friends. During meals when King Gaff and Norwyn bantered about politics and the importance of magic in Mysticorian culture, Senka and Casta found themselves amusing each other by performing spells to "show off". They had a great deal of fun enlarging puddings and shrinking vegetables, and often they would have contests to see who could get away with the largest dessert plate before catching the eye of Norwyn or one of the insulted cooks. Casta was as kind and wise as Senka's first impression of her dictated she would be, but more importantly, Senka was thrilled to have someone other than her father figure, who she could confide in.
Senka had not revealed the strange new sickness she felt when in the presence of Rangeaux to Casta yet, but she had a feeling Casta had some suspicions. Senka did not feel comfortable enough yet to talk about these feelings though, and Casta must have sensed this, for whenever Rangeaux walked by or was somehow brought up in their conversations, they both quickly moved on to the next topic. Casta did not often ask many questions about where exactly Norwyn and Senka had come from. Perhaps it was her knack for Royal etiquette that prevented her from doing so, but whatever the reason, Senka was glad not to have to tell tells of Despondos. Casta was intrigued one day, when she asked Senka about her age.
“I was wondering When is your birthday Senka?” Casta had asked, quite obviously with intentions of planning something to celebrate.
“I’m not sure, I was very young when Norwyn adopted me, and we have never celebrated the anniversary of either of our dates of birth before.” Senka had replied.
Casta looked at her dumbfounded.
“I cannot believe that our teacher could be so could as to not celebrate either of your birthdays.” Casta said still in disbelief.
“We did not do much celebrating of anything where we used to live.”
“Well, we cannot have that! I will ask my grandfather if we can celebrate the day of your arrival here in Mysticor as a birthday for both of you.” Casta insisted.
Senka smiled embarrassed at her thoughtfulness.
“If you have not celebrated a birthday, I guess you don’t know how old you are either, do you?” Casta asked, still probing her.
Senka shrugged. She had never even considered the importance of this before now. What struck Senka the most however, was the fact that Casta cared enough for Senka and her feelings, that she wished to celebrate her birthday. What a wonderful friend she had found, Senka had never known that she could be so fortunate.
