There are countless new things added to this remake, and the majority of them are wonderful additions to the gameplay.
First and foremost, this is NOT RE4 2005 with a new coat of paint... it is an entirely new game built from the ground up that is heavily inspired by RE4 2005. The graphics are the most obvious change from the original, and they are gorgeous. Seriously, the amount of detail that Capcom added to areas that the player only spends a few seconds in is mind boggling. The animations, combat, dialogue, interactions, and control all feel great. Yes, there is a bit of rewiring that you need to put your brain through to get accustomed to the new ways in which Leon moves, fights, interacts, etc., but after a couple of hours, it will feel like second nature. One thing that I found incredibly helpful concerning the reportedly "sluggish" control is changing the movement and aiming speed to much higher than the default.
One thing that gets omitted quite often in the reviews is the sound and music in this remake. The ambient sounds are horrifyingly splendid! Screams from far off in the distance, groans of a dying ganado, the cackle of crows in the trees, the low murmur of sadistic cultists... it's astounding how eerie this makes the experience - so much so that it even made my wife feel uncomfortable!
However, with all of that said, I still prefer the core gameplay mechanics of the original RE4. Maybe it's because I've played through the 2005 game on every single console starting with the Gamecube all the way up to PS4, or that it holds some special memories of the nights my brother and I would spend hours playing through the mercenaries mode - regardless, there is an unquestionable difference between the two games. Yet, unlike Metroid Prime Remastered, RE4 is a game that can be enjoyed in both remastered and original flavors because they are so distinctly different.
