1.) The 80's tracklist is kinda... meh. I'm still gonna buy it, but you know.

2.) Rock Band sounds so awesome. But it's a pretty big investment. I'm pretty sure I won't have 3 other people to play with regularly.

3.) Have you guys heard the trick of putting a sock on your fretting hand so you can fly back and forth between your hand poistions faster and smoother? Well, it totally works. I've gotten 6 more 5 stars on Hard since I started using it. I should put some punk rock spikes on the top or something.

Although Golden Earring did record the original (and superior) version of Radar Love, it was back in the 70's. White Lion covered this classic in the 80's, and I believe this is the version that will be included. I'm just happy that this awesome track is in there!

I am so stoked for this game it's sick! I can't wait!

Just read a report on kotaku that claims to confirm 3 additional tracks - take it as you will.....

Caught in a Mosh - Anthrax
    Turning Japanese - The Vapors
    Seventeen - Winger

Again, these are NOT confirmed by Red Octane, but I'd love to have all 3 of them included! I was actually hoping for Caught in a Mosh when Anthrax was announced as being GH2.....

Yeah, it will be interesting to see how that one actually does in sales. On the one hand, it is an awesome concept and could be a lot of fun, and has a lot of possibilities.

On the other hand, it is a big investment, and a big concept... almost TOO big, and that could be it's downfall. Technically you don't have to buy ALL of the peripherals, but in not doing so, you wouldn't be able to fully explore the game, leaving many parts unused/unplayed. So, a lot of people may look at it as all or nothing... and the price of the 'all' may detour people from even giving it a chance.

I will wait and see how it turns out before investing any money into it.

Additionally, if they really want to capture the craptastic cheesiness of 80's "guitar heroes" Bon Jovi must be included. Livin' on a Prayer would be the tops, but Shot Through the Heart or Dead or Alive would also suffice.

    - One disk with 4 separate campaigns. Guitar, Drum, Bass and Vocal. Each can be played on its own from start to finish, in addition, a full band game is designed to allow for one huge co-op playthrough.

    - Will feature full support for four player online play on both 360 and PS3. Any combination of on/offline play will work and each player can pick their own difficulty setting.

    - Flexible community system will allow you to find bandmates anywhere in the world

    - There will be a way for you to share your band's triumphs with the world, but the details are still under wraps.

    - Musical fret-boards are now transparent so you can see more of the background visuals. Guitar is on the left side of the screen, Bass on the right and drums down the middle. Vocals scroll from right to left along the top of the screen.

    - Guitars and Bass now have 10 frets. 5 for the regular sections of the game and 5 for the newly designated solo sections.

    - Whammy bar is back as is the tilt to activate rock band's version of star power

    - there is a five way switch on the guitar that allows for 5 different self-applied effects to the sound.

    - Singing is now more in depth. There is a phoneme detector that will pick up individual vowels and consonants you say. Build up enough highly judged phrases and you'll be able to sing free-form. If you do well enough in free-form, then you'll trigger the vocalist's version of star power.

    - Microphone doubles as a tambourine on many songs to combat super long guitar solos where the singer doesn't have much to do.

    - Drums are apparently insane. You use actual sticks and hit one of four colored pads in front of you, in addition to a kick pedal attached to the drumming unit. Drummers will also have the ability to do fills etc. in their own little free-form section, do well and you'll trigger the drummers version of star power.

    - If one person fails, the whole band does not fail, their section simply turns gray and they have to sit out the rest of the song unless one your band mates initiates star power, which will bring you back into the fold.

    - If all bandmates can reach the end of a song, you'll be greeted with one huge free-form jam session.

    - There will be a character creation system, and you can create multiple avatars that play different instruments.

    - Four themed clothing stores in addition to licensed guitars and pedals and other rock paraphernalia.

    - A full set of mo-cap stage movements have been added for each instrument. You can decide whether your vocalist moves like Axel Rose, or stands his ground like Clapton.

    - 40 performance venues planned

    - All peripherals will be unique to each platform. This isn't the developer's decision. Apparently MS peripherals require special circuit boards.

    - You'll be able to craft your own band logo

    - The HUD in the screens isn't final but is a good indication of what you can expect

    - 4 songs announced in the article, not sure if this is new or old but whatever.
Weezer - Say It Ain't So - Original Master Track
Black Sabbath - Paranoid - Original Master Track
The Who - Won't Get Fooled Again - Original Master Track
Nirvana - In Bloom - Original Master Track

    INSTRUMENT DESCRIPTIONS

Sorry I can't post photos so my descriptions will have to suffice

    Guitars/Bass

Guitars are an exact 3/4 replica of a Fender Strat.

Xplorer guitars will work for 360 owners, but you may not be able to pass on all the new stuff this model has.

Five familiar buttons near the top of the neck, five buttons near the body of the guitar. You will use these new buttons during specially designed solo sections using ONLY hammer ons and pull offs, no having to worry about your strum bar. Signature Fender 5-way switch has been added. By shopping at the in game store you'll be able to purchase several virtual effects pedals such as Flange, Wah, Chorus and Echo. These can be applied during your song by setting the 5 way switch to the desired effect.

    Microphone

There will eventually be a Rock Band branded Mic

Other USB mics will be supported, but Harmonix will probably NOT allow the use of the 360 headset due to its low fidelity. Mics will be usable as tambourines during certain songs.

    That's all for mics!

    DRUMS

The picture of the drum peripheral in the mag is not final.

It consists of four pads, a kick pedal and legs for the enire unit to stand on. Think of it as a TV dinner tray stand only cooler [Smile]

Leftmost pad (red) is your snare drum, everything else doubles as toms and cymbals depending on the song.

A set of real wooden drum sticks will ship with the unit.

A piece of the stand can be taken off so that the unit can sit lower, or on a coffee table.

    There is a kick pedal

If you play drums in this game on hard or expert, then you're really playing the drums. Apparently you could sit down at a real set and play the same songs.
There's a feature in the new Game Informer.

    Ten fret buttons!

Sounds good. I need to find three, dependable people that can get together on a semi-regular basis to play.

EDIT: And here's the Stratocaster controller.

I can't stand people complaining about the price of the download packs. Doesn't anyone realize that it's not as simple as uploading a song to iTunes? They have to add bass/rhythm guitar tabs, which takes time and effort. $2 and change per song is really not a bad deal at all.

Picked up Guitar Hero Encore: Rocks the 80's today. This game is near perfect for me. It has all the great multiplayer aspects from Guitar Hero II, and a track list that I just love. There were a lot of songs I hated playing through on part II, and made it feel like a chore. But I'm enjoying every bit of this game. It even almost seems a bit harder. I normally play on the hard/expert level and some songs on hard are giving me trouble.

Now for the bad parts.....they're charging 49.99 most at most places for this game. It's only got about half the songs II had, and half the characters. But the characters that are in it are the good ones. No extra costumes to unlock or bonus songs or videos. Just guitars, skins and one extra character, the Grim Ripper. For what they are calling an " expansion " this game should have been either 29.99 or 39.99.

Best Buy is charging $39.99, but I was looking at all the circular ads in this past Sunday's newspaper, and everywhere else (Circuit City and Target for sure) were charging $49.99.

That was my experience yesterday as well, whats funny though is after the Wii/360/PS3 came out a majority of PS2 games lowered their retail to $39.99 with some exceptions (Final Fantasy and Gods of War II)

I think Walmart is charging $39.99 as well

The retail price on 80s Edition was upped to $49.99 several weeks ago. (While for months it was announced being $29.99) That is the regular price. Best Buy's $39.99 is the sale price through this Saturday, then it will go up to the full price of $50.

I'm guessing that Harmonix/Red Octane/Activision decided that they knew it'd sell at $50, and that $$$ will contribute to licensing/development of GH3/Rock Band.

Way to milk the fans guys.......

The ONLY excuse for upping the price for this is the potential that now that GH is a HUGE franchise, musicians/record labels want more $$$ for licensing. It's gotta be one of the 2 reasons above for a game with less than half the songs of GH1, no unlockable songs/videos/outfits, only 6 playable characters with new skins but same GH2 animations, the same GH2 venues tweaked to reflect the 80s, and all the exact same guitars & skins from GH2 to cost $10 more than the first GH game......

I tried my best to hold off on buying it, hoping that I could wait until they decide if they want to release the tracks as DLC on the 360, but I caved and bought it yesterday. 8 songs left on Hard mode, but with a few exceptions, this game is WAY easier than GH2. (Or maybe I've just gotten a helluva lot better!) Songs so far that I've had fun playing are:

    -Turning Japanese
    -Hold On Loosely
    -Only A Lad
-The Warrior (Had to hear this song at every sporting event at my High School, as we were the Warriors)
    -I Wanna Rock
    -I Ran
    -Round And Round
    -Holy Diver

And of the 8 remaining songs I have to unlock, the final 6 are going to be the best! Maiden, Priest, Dead Kennedys, Winger, Anthrax, Extreme!!!!!!!

LOL - Yeah, I still play at least 2-3 hours a week. On the 360 GH2 version, the only thing I have left to unlock is the Log. I'm completely 100% done with Easy Mode (Every song gold-starred), and have like 4-5 songs left on Medium to gold-star. Hard Mode, I've only got a handful of gold stars, and I BARELY got through Expert Mode to unlock the Axe guitar......

I decided to start this game on Hard Mode, since I've been playing Hard & Expert on the 360. The difficulty on the set list is more balanced with the new game, as the tiers actually do become increasingly difficult, as opposed to GH2, where some tiers were kinda unbalanced. But then again, maybe it was harder towards the end as it was like 2:30am, and I was tired from playing for like 3 hours......You're gonna have to come over sometime so we can get some co-op going!

    Here's IGN's review - they gave it a 7.2/10......

July 23, 2007 - Think you can ever get enough of Guitar Hero? We don't, so long as RedOctane and company keep kicking out killer track lists. Unfortunately, that's not exactly the case with Guitar Hero Encore: Rocks the '80s.

The game and expansion pack of sorts that was long-rumored well before it was ever officially announced is a collection of guitar-centric hits from the 1980s. The latter part of that sentence may sound something like an oxymoron as much of the decade was driven by synthesizers, electronic drum sets and the like, but there apparently were just enough songs to put together a full track list.

And that may be part of the problem. While the previous two titles had multiple decades' worth of music to select from, Guitar Hero Encore: Rocks the '80s was stuck dead in the center of the music fad that everyone hates to love. Had it been based in the '90s or '70s, everything would have been fine. But in the '80s, guitar solos, interesting passages and the like were hard to find, at least in the mainstream hits that games like this need to be based on.

As a result, more than half of the songs found here are flat-out boring to play, and once you've gotten through them, you'll very likely never go back. This is in stark contrast to what we saw in Guitar Hero I and II, where nearly every track was a winner. Though most of the tracks here are good songs when listened to over the radio, they simply aren't fun to actually play.

There are a number of very good and very fun tracks to be found, like Iron Maiden's "Wrathchild", Anthrax's "Caught in a Mosh", Extreme's "Play With Me" and a handful of others, but they're comparatively few and far between. For the first five of six sets of songs, you may find one in there that's fun while the rest will be rather boring. The last set is great, but it feels like too little too late.

Another disappointing aspect is that there are only 30 tracks to be found. There are no bonus tracks to purchase in the store, which puts the total track count well behind what we've seen in previous releases. With the title launching at a full $49.99 price point, we simply expected to see more.

In addition to the relatively low track count, the quality of the covers is quite simply not as good as what we've come to expect from the franchise. Most of the music is fine, though some of the mixing doesn't have the guitar or other instrumentation as loud as we'd like, but the vocals are a problem for a number of the tracks. Most vocalists in the '80s sang very high, so their vocal tones are harder to reproduce. As a result, songs like "Holy Diver" don't sound anything like the original and instead sound like they're played by local bar bands. That's not to say that all of them are poor, as a number are quite good, but the percentage of great vs. not-so-great is a good deal worse than we've seen in the past.

The game really does just feel like an expansion pack for a number of reasons aside from its shortened track list. For one, there really isn't any "new" content aside from the tracks. All of the characters and venues were simply taken from Guitar Hero II and given '80s makeovers. They all look good and appropriate, but it certainly doesn't help make it feel any fresher. Likewise, there are no new gameplay tweaks whatsoever. The game is still just as fun as ever on a core mechanics level, but everything works exactly the same. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but once again, it doesn't help the title shake its expansion pack feel.

    Closing Comments
Guitar Hero Encore: Rocks the '80s is certainly a disappointing release in one of the most fun and refreshing franchises we've seen anytime lately. It's fun, but it doesn't hold a candle to the previous two releases. If you're hard-pressed for new tracks and don't mind spending $50 for only a handful of good songs, you'll find that the good parts are great. But be prepared to sludge through plenty of boring tracks.
EDIT: OK, just completed Hard Mode, and 4 songs left to go back and 5-star to unlock the Eyeball guitar. My God - "Play With Me" continues the trend of being the final song for a reason. WOW, just WOW. I'm scared to even attempt it on Expert Mode.

Songs I'm having the hardest time 5-starring are:

    What I Like About You
    Ballroom Blitz
    Electric Eye
    Play With Me

But overall, the final tier is a BLAST to play! Every song is a winner! Have fun with "Caught In A Mosh"!!!!

Amazing how I can go through easy and medium and get 5 stars on all of them, but when I get to hard I can barely survive. That fifth key is what gets me.

I also downloaded a few of the packs last night. I couldn't resist Smoke on the Water and Killer Queen. Had to rock out with that

"LaGrange" - as made famous by ZZ Top
"Number Of The Beast" - performed by Iron Maiden
"Through the Fire and Flames" - performed by Dragonforce

Keep them coming, they're all great tracks. Just too bad LaGrange is a cover, "Sharp Dressed Man" from GH1, was the worst cover in that game, IMO......
