I love your Trap Jaw. His smirk goes with his body language really well. He seems really solid and grounded too, which is hard to do with cartoon pin-ups. Great work. You were going to do a picture of Shokoti and Masque next, right?

osgood: thank you for the comments on trap jaw! as for shokoti and masque, i don't think i had mentioned anything about them previously, but if you want to see them, i'll definitely move them to the head of the queue as soon as i start getting to cartoon-exclusive characters (i've already started on a few, from the main cast).

    but for now:

I confess, I am not crazy about how this one turned out. The colors are alright, but the pose is awfully awkward. I actually did a lot of futzing with this in Photoshop, adjusting the position of her arms and literally rearranging her face. The result is better than what I started with, but nothing to write home about. In the plus column, I do think I did a decent job of giving her distinct facial features while keeping her attractive, yet evil-looking.

    what do you think?

faker is just about done, and i'm going to post him later this week... got a few others in the works, mostly stuff for other threads, and mostly stuff that i've already mentioned, but there's at least one surprise in there...

Some very nice MotU renderings, Bootleg - though I have to agree with you on the awkwardness of the Evil-Lyn pose. Love her face, though - you did a really good job of capturing the character, IMO

i like lyn and i think the pose is good...the right arm is throwing it off a little bit, perhaps if it was more foreshortened and coming at us more it would make the composition more dynamic...

    keep 'em coming!!!

don't forget bootlegs malbino character(and others) is in the fan creation contest!!!

coinilius: thanks, i appreciate the comments.
skeletoncrew: thank you, that's a good crit, and i agree. and thanks for giving malbino a little plug!

    And for today...

Faker's original title was "Evil Robotic He-Man Imposter," but in the filmation toon, he was conjured by Skeletor's magic. Combining the technological and magical origins of Faker, and envisioning my take on the character as something of a cross between a zombie and a Terminator, I gave him the title "Evil Relentless Doppelganger." Relentless is, of course, a nod to how Terminators are frequently described, and doppelgangers are creatures from folklore and, um, Dungeons and Dragons.

This one is a little unusual for a few reasons--for one, I don't usually render shadow with line art, and as you can see, one side of his face is pretty heavily hatched. Also, the way I drew and colored the highlights in his hair is different from the more simplistic way that I usually depict hair. I think it worked out alright.

Some notes on the colors themselves--the power sword is supposed to be a mystical construct, generated by Faker's battle aura. This was an idea I came up with to explain why Faker's sword would be bright orange. Faker's green gem and green eyes are supposed to be a callback to my take on Skeletor (see first post in this thread--if you refer back, you can see that I colored Skeletor's gem green as well. The idea is that the gem is not merely for show, and serves some kind of mystical function. Since Faker was always something of a cross between He-Man and Skeletor, perhaps it is through the twin gems that Skeletor imbued part of his essence into Faker. If you look scroll up a bit, you can see that I gave Evil-Lyn a green gem and green eyes as well--the idea is that she's drawing on a similar source of power as Skeletor.

I spelled "doppelganger" wrong in the picture. I'm too lazy to change it. I am a bad person.

    I'm diggin' Faker.

But you're a good artist, and I have a weakness for Faker....

    So this is not surprising.

On a random side note, I've been thinking about your designs, and why I find them appealing. I think your style would work very well as a "Classic play-pattern and production value, modern materials and construction standards." re-vamp. Kind of like the dream re-launch for those who found the 200X/MYP version to be too drab, and to not have enough play value.

    EDIT-
    How'd I miss this???

Wow, Thanks! I was going to point you to the 'Golden Book' Project thread, where we had all the "official" designs posted, but then I remembered....the server is still down. We'll be back up and running soon, but if you want to shoot me a PM with your email, I could always send them to you directly.

Wow faker looks great! Wonderful job bootleg! I'm really digging the shadow on his face, for whatever reason it really works for this particular picture.

DestrongerLupus: wow! thank you so much! i do like the 200x style a lot, they're fantastic designs, but i just feel like it lacked the flair and individuality of the classic stuff. thank you again for the kind comments--i'm terribly flattered! (i'll PM you about the podcast characters)
    Patreek: thanks buddy!
Galvatron: thanks man, i really appreciate it.

    EDIT (5/21/2007)... another one added:

It seems like fans generally agree that he is probably not Skeletor's ghost, and that works fine for me. As a result, I have changed his title to "Evil Ghost Warrior."

The drawing itself is actually several months old--after I completed Skeletor, I had a couple of failed attempts at Scare Glow that got as far as inks, but didn't quite sit right with me... actually, those first few attempts just plain sucked. What you're looking at is my third attempt, and I'm pretty happy with how it turned out. The pose is meant to convey Scare Glow's standing as I see it--one of the deadliest and most trusted of Skeletor's minions. Anyways, this pic had been sitting in my hard-drive half-colored for months, and now here it is.

As far as the character itself--we already have it established that Scare Glow is summoned from another time and/or place, though officially we don't know more specifics... I envision Scare Glow as being a vengeful spirit from Infinita.

Before I finish up this post, there's an anal retentive point that I want to address--Scare Glow's weapon is frequently referred to as a scythe, and I'm sorry but that is hands-down, one-hundred percent wrong. A weapon does not automatically become scythe just because it's wielded by a grim reaper-like character! I should however, clarify that I'm talking about the classic Scare Glow--the Scare Glow for the 200x revamp, obviously did carry a scythe. But back to the classic version--I've also seen it referred to as a halberd, which is much closer, but still not quite right, because Scare Glow's weapon lacks a spike at the head and a hook or thorn on the backside of the blade. I thought that it was a glaive, but this too was a mistake, as closer inspection revealed that a glaive's blade is mounted on the end of the pole, not the side. Further investigation lead me to the lochaber axe, which is pretty close--but again, Scare Glow's weapon lacked a vital component--a hook at the head of the pole. Finally, my research turned up the bardiche and the voulge--both seem like they could work, but I'm guessing voulge is the way to go.

Do we have any medieval weapons experts who can give us a verdict? Or maybe just a really well versed fantasy RPG fan?

Another GREAT pic! I really like how you've used his pose to generate his rank - MINION!

As for his weapon. I also noticed a lot of people refer to his weapon as a HALBERD. It "may" have just been a mix up as the classic Grayskull did "also" come with a HALBERD and the association could have caused some confusion.

He is most definitely armed with a VOULGE

    WOW,

This is definitely my favorite pic so far!

It's just too bad that I can't snag him and use him as a Megacast cover some time It'd easily be one of our best ever

And I saw BAH to the French and their overly-precise and specific naming tendencies, call it a pole-arm and be done with it

*Who would admit to publically calling the darned thing a halberd, but then that would require admitting to certain other facts....*

Sllohcin: thanks dude--i'm glad you like the pose! you're probably right about the halberd thing... and that's two votes for voulge!
DestrongerLupus: thanks man! as far as nomenclature, i'm fine with people being more general rather than incorrectly specific! i admit it, i'm a pain in the butt when it comes to semantics as far as the megacast goes--i'd be glad to have my art on the cover! PM me the specs (like what resolution and format you want) and what text you want on it (title, episode #, etc) and i will make you a version you can use...
Mike Bock: i really appreciate it man! coming from a master of the classic style such as yourself, that's quite a compliment!

AMAZING! I really like the colors, but my favorite feature is that the black part of his body is semi transparent. Very cool.

    Very tight piece Bootleg!
I like that you took the time to make the bones look correct as a skeleton for the pose as well as the "Voulge" look very rendered, but the best part of all is the COLORS are just STELLAR! Great job again my friend!

Patreek: i'm glad you liked it man. and i'm glad that the transparency 'reads' properly.

JafariStew: thank you very much! as always, your support is greatly appreciated!

tornadobr: welcome Gus! thanks for the kind words. i have been away from the boards for a few weeks, but now that i'm back, hopefully i'll be able to get back to posting somewhat frequently.

coinilius: thanks man, i really appreciate it!

for those of you who follow this thread, you may or may not have noticed, i have been absent from the boards for a couple of weeks, for the usual boring but annoying reasons (crazy work hours, backed up kitchen sink etc.), but things are relatively back to normal, so hopefully i can jump back into my semi-regular posting of MOTU/POP fan art. for now, here's something a little different:

Doodled this on an actual legal pad quite some time ago, scanned it in, added the shadow, type, and red eyes in Photoshop, and stored it away for a rainy day.

Yo!...Why have I not see these?....I really dig your works, Bootleg!

For some reason the Beast Man really stands out...I love how he looks like the paintings on the back of the cardbacks...and his blue whip...it's all very cool.

And that Horde Prime...is ....AWESOME!....If I draw Horde Prime in a comic that's how he'd have to be...he's scary and powerful...and wow...just so cool...
