I'd have to disagree with that. I think that she's a very key supporting cast character.

The last movie's flopping had next to nothng to do with her. There was plenty done wrong in the last movie, including the Sorceress (I didn't like the look either) but there was no one who walked out saying, "man that would've been good if the sorceress was done right" or "i would'a watched MOTU, but they totally screwed up hte sorceress".
Getting the Sorceress wrong won't kill a MotU movie in and of itself, but if you get her wrong it brings you that much closer to killing the movie.

I would say, for example, that if you get the Sorceress, and two other characters of equal stature (say, Man-At-Arms and Evil-Lyn) wrong, then the movie will flop unless He-Man and Skeletor are flat-out awesome and spectacular.

I expect that she will be completely redone.
Man, that scares me, because the Sorceress is a hard character to get right. I'd honestly take Egyptian Sorceress over a re-imagining of the character that could easily go badly.

If anything, it'll be a variation of Filmation Sorceress -- the one that was a hit.
Just because something isn't a hit doesn't mean it's not good, and just because it IS a hit doesn't mean it IS good.

Britney Spears has released many "hits"... and they aren't good!

That may be true, but still... if something isn't a hit even if it's good in general, then there has to be something about it that limited its success or "held it back" as it were. There has to be a key flaw or two to it that needs to be addressed.

If you're going to promote a largely MYP-esque He-Man movie, then I would encourage you to grapple with what that flaw may be, and see how we can fix it.

    I totally agree with you.

So... better case ratios. Maybe not even ratios since some characters are likely not to be as popular, but enough so that everyone who wants a figure can get it.

    Less stupid variants.

And there we have it, a fixed MYP!

You know... MYP He-Man was suffering ratings wise as well. It wasn't just the toys.

MYP He-Man had freakin' Teen Titans as a lead-in, but it was failing to keep a large enough chunk of those viewers. All MYP He-Man had to do was persuade Teen Titans watchers to spend one more half-hour of cartoon watching on its show. That alone would have made it a ratings success.

    On Saturdays.

In a pretty good time slot.

The actual cartoon had its failings, period.

the problem with the MYP cartoon was that they didn't FINISH the explanation of who He-Man is in the cartoon opening... Adam STARTS to tell the story, and then is interrupted by Skeletor's goons...

If you hadn't seen "In the Beginning," you would be like, "HUH? Why does this kid turn into this muscle guy??" Who is Skeletor? What exactly does he want? They never made anything clear enough...

try it, go to a mid-season episode, and pretend you know NOTHING about MOTU. Watch from the opening, and see how confusing it gets.

Kids didn't know the set-up so they changed the channel.

You know... that is a different angle on things, and you could very well be right. I might give your suggestion a try.

Maybe they simply should have let Adam finish his line, become He-Man, and say "...defend Castle Grayskull from the evil forces of Skeletor."

You know... like what Filmation did.

    Sorry, I couldn't resist.

Edit: I dont know about where you live, but where I lived the show had its timeslot changed every couple of weeks.

Sure it did. It wasn't perfect. But if it was perfect, it would've been cancelled because of poor planning by Mattel with regards to their toyline. MYP ended because Mattel drove MOTU into the ground. Here are stats related to the toys. Note how many variants there are in the 200x release, as well as the number of unique characters. Also note that case-packing tends to be very He-Man/Skeletor heavy, thus many secondary characters are hard to get. Furthermore, please remember that apparently in the past stores were able to order cases of specific characters *this was mentioned in another thread in the classic forum*, so 80's figure assortments could be tailored to public needs according to demand.

I decided to make a spreadsheet to determine how many characters each version had. I cut out all the vehicles, accessories, gift packs, meteorbs, creatures and re-issues. I wanted to see the number of variants they had out there on single carded figures.

    The results are as follows:

NOTE: There are sure to be a few numbers off, a couple lost characters and a handful of characters i shouldn've have counted *maybe i forgot a creature in or something, but the character lists will be given as well for you to fix my errors*.

    MOTU 198X Stats:

Note: Euro Exclusives Included, so feel free to subract Tytus et al from totals.
    73 Figures
    4 Skeletors
    5 He-Mans
    3 Hordaks
2 Fakers -- Counted Faker II as a variant of 1
    63 Unique Characters in Total

    MOTU 200x Stats:

Note: Convention and mail away exclusives are included. I also did not count Keldor as a Skeletor Variant.
    56 Figures
    39 Variants
7 figures with repaints. They are Mer-Man, Ram Man, Beast Man, Skeletor, Two Bad, Trap Jaw, Tri Klops

8 Skeletor (one is the repaint)
    2 Mekanecks
    2 Stratos

    29 Unique Characters in Total

The Character Lists I used I got from the org. I had to edit some stuff to get them to work in excel. There are sure to be errors, feel free to point them out, but I imagine the gist of the numbers speaks for themselves.

It sounds to me as if MYP was striving for an American anime -- LITERALLY.

If you've ever seen shows like Bleach, Inuyasha, or Fullmetal Alchemist, you have to watch the shows FROM THE BEGINNING ... or else you're lost!

The Four Horsemen perfectly capture the essence of MOTU to me. I can never get over how people would dislike their designs. I mean they are the same designs just a little more detailed. I don't get it.

I'd like to sketch up some of my designs and post them here. I'm sure they'll get shot down because they go much further than the 4H ever would... I think I'm becoming a heretic to the purists on here.

I don't like the 4H designs either. It's not to say that they can't sculpt or aren't good artists, but it looks like anime. Too angular and strays away from the original design. I think the new movie design/story should be sure to steer clear away from making things too different like the 87 movie which just looks like a cross between highlander and robocop.. It sucked.. I don't want the new one to.

I think that that the French did the best thing by keeping Asterix and Obelix the same, just as they were in the beginning of their "creation". And to prove my theory of not needing any changes, Asterix and Obelix got their own movies recently too and they were pretty successful. I didn't see anyone complaining there...!
Sometimes I think that the problem are the MotU fans, they just don't know what they want...

I'm going to have to look into this "Asterix and Obelix". I've never heard of them before.

Thanks for the feedback, Mermaidliz and everybody else!

Darth Latveria - Yeah, Mattel was really dumb with all the variants this latest time around. You're definitely right there.

Ya see I just think the basic designs are already there and would work fine with just some alterations and accessorising.

He-man would be the same. Add some leather, chain mail, pouches, daggers and such and yer done.

Thanks for the praise. I agree with you about the designs. if the movie makers think they need to change up the designs radically their artists have no imagination. Between the various incarnations of MOTU there are great starting points for costume designs.
