I don't see the need in that many layers on illustration such as this. But I guess each artist has his own way or working.

Maybe each of the snow-flakes has their own unique layer or something...

lol that's nothing! Some of my pics have well over 100 layers and some of the PSD file sizes are over 200mb.. though the large files are usually because I am working at 600-1200 resolution! Just counted the layers in my picture of the Crystal Castle, already over 150 layers, though thankfully the file size is just 9.2mb!

Do youself a favour and merge layers as you go.
It saves time and forces you to commit to creative decisions which will benefit you in the long term!

Hmmm do smart objects take up more memory? They're great if you want to change something at the last minute.

I dunno if they do take up more memory, I would imagine they do a little bit but I haven't noticed a massive difference in files size since I started doing DVD covers with seperately drawn characters.

I do merge, but when I have to! A lot of what I have had to do requires me to leave most of the layers separate, also I find it great for when I notice I have made a mistake somewhere, I can just edit or rid myself of that layer, rather than damaging the image as a whole!
