    Tri-Klops painting

It's been a long while since I've been able to post fan-art, but I've had some free time on my hands lately and wanted to work on my digital painting skills. This is a realistic take on Tri-Klops. I took all the elements I liked from the different versions of Tri-Klops and merged them into my "ultimate" version of the character.

I wanted to depict him realistically and Johnny Bilson's (A.K.A. Vahn) Tri-Klops costume proved invaluable reference for this. If you haven't seen it yet check out the awesomeness here! (Photos by Danny Cardenas)

    UPDATE:

I painted in a neutral background

    Amazing stuff!

You've been doing some big leaps in your art since the last time, haven't you? And you didn't tell us!

    ...

A small crit tho, there's something that need some tweaking here, and I would say it's that some of the elements of the painting doesn't quite feel as if they merge together seamlessly. It's hard to explain, but it's like you've modeled some stuff individually or something.

If you've seen some of Maxx's early heavily rendered work, he had that going as well.

I'd like to add a background, but I thought I'd post it as is because I got an updated cardback illustration vibe from it. I'm all for realism and detail, and my ultimate MOTU line would look a lot like this. I could imagine a cardback very reminiscent of the vintage line but with modern more detailed illustrations like this.

No live model, but as I stated in the opening post I used some amazing photo reference provided by Johnny Bilson(better known as Vahn around these parts) and Danny Cardenas. Excellent stuff and I really couldn't hope for better reference for this painting.

    Thanks!
Actually this picture in itself was a huge leap for me as I haven't had time to do any finished work in 2D for a long time. So it's not like I'm sitting on a huge stack of incremental improvements that I haven't posted. This project was an enormous learning experience for me. Trust me, if I had something worth sharing I wouldn't leave my org buddies out of the loop!

I agree that a few things look out of place, particularly the left shinguard. I repainted that completely twice then tweaked the levels but I still couldn't get it to look right. Also the levels of the whole image were horribly off when I first posted it since I worked exclusively on my laptop and the monitor is bright and washed out. When I saw it on my desktop I realized half the image was lost in black. I fixed the levels, but then a bunch of little things started to stick out with the higher contrast. Since I was doing this primarily for excercise and fun I'm not terribly concerned about fixing it, but critiques are always welcome!

I finally got around to putting a background in. It's just a neutral "photo studio" type background, but I wanted this piece to feel finished.
