It's not tenuous, it's the exact concept. If you consider it tenuous, you've missed the point completely.

Buzz Lightyear is a toy sold in a major toy store. MOTU is going to a major toy store (apparently). It's good because Buzz is a good guy, but Buzz Lightyear in the poster could be replaced with literally any toy sold in a major toy store and the concept would still work fine.

Seriously, how can you not get that? It's such an incredibly simple concept.

ten·u·ous adj. of slight significance; unsubstantial.

The indirect relationship of the merchandise of one property and the merchandise of another by way of shared space in a store is not a significant or substantial relationship between the properties; and since the advertisement relies on the concept that toys are secretly alive, the relationship between the properties needs to be significant or substantial in order to extend the concept from the property that features it to the property that does not.

OMG! We get it...you don't care for the mock ad and you don't think that it's cleaver. Fine! Just because you aren't amused doesn't mean that it's wrong (unless of course Disney and Pixar's legal departments had an issue with it)!

Obviously there has never been a Toy Story and MOTU crossover and there is no history of Buzz Lightyear ever facing of with Skeletor or anyone else from MOTU. The above mock up ad is just a little satire made by a fan, for the amusement of other fans. If you aren't amused, there is no need to rain on everyone else's parade. Just say that you aren't amused and move on.

    Oh STOP!!

    It's hilarious...

The ad isn't "tenuous." The Toy Story line is produced by Mattel... it is another property that Mattel has the license for... TRU has a large area for Toy Story toys in the boys' toys section. It's an ad that not only makes a joke of Skeletor being the toy-store bully, but also creates an interesting cross-promotion. This ad would grab the attention of a Toy Story fan AND/OR a MOTU fan... as well as any parent who grew up in the 80s.

The Optimus Prime one is hysterical... but Hasbro would KILL Mattel on that LOL.

Er... Actually, in the case of this ad, the shared space is the direct relationship. Skeletor has invaded that shared space.

That's it. Nothing more, nothing less.

    Seriously, it's not difficult.

True. Plus, maybe Buzz encounters MOTU figures in ToyStory 3? The green guy looks all MOTU and Mattel makes all the toys in the films.

    Buzz vs. Skeletor two pack?

    Those are awesome!

And it's a VERY understandable concept. Skeletor is back in toy aisles... the other lines better run in fear... Easy to grasp the relationship, if you have a sense of humor.

I think these ads would work a lot better if there was some visual connection between Skeletor and the toys in the picture. Without the text and the MOTU logo the toys could have been killed/hurt by anything. This indeed makes the whole connection a little bit tenuous. Now if you would make some visual connection to Skeletor, for example by putting his sword into Bob's head instead of a generic hammer, you would drive your point across much stronger in my opinion.
