That super-dense, heavy, chunky, durable look, kind of like the Fisher-Price toy line Rescue Heroes, or G.I. Joe's Sigma Six series was great, but I really like this one too. The only thing I feel hurts their appearance here is that they aren't shaded at all. The first He-Man, with the articulation details, is nicely cell-shaded, and looks great, then the character sheets kind-of look like a 2-D construction paper cut-outs. My only critique would be to apply the shading details from that first image to the others, and I think they'd sell like hotcakes!
Thanks for the support GS and I fully understand the desire for the more completed look. They would look better. My reasoning to forgo the cell-shading is simply the amount of work to do it. He-Man was just my easy way of showing off what they "could" potentially look like in 3D.

I guess I'm trying to streamline the amount of work for each character so I can doodle one out and post it on my free time during lunch, etc.

Me too! Actually, I'll tackle Teela and Evil-Lyn next. Although somewhat squat to match the rest, I think a curvy Frazetta thickness would look best.

    Now onto Beast Man

He was a bugger because even though he uses the bigger torso idea, he didn't come out as tall as I would have liked due to him looking better with a slightly dropped head. In toy form, I was hoping he would stand about .5" taller than a reg. figure.

I wanted Beast Man to be Skeletor's BIG man/creature. The powerhouse if you will. Someone who would rival He-Man in strength as well as act as Skeletor's personal protector/henchman. I would expect him to be very, VERY mean in an alpha male bestial "tear your limbs off and eat your face" fun kind of way. Also, I wanted to make Beast Man very reminiscent of the Alcala monsters/trolls/demons. I thought he perfectly fit the idea of being of their race (I'm waiting for the reactions when I do up Evil-Lyn as I'm contemplating a Drow Elf type of character with the dark ashen skin instead of yellow... and what about Ram Man? I always thought he would be better as a Dwarf-like character than the MYP giant.)

Ok I see. I like Beastman, he definitely looks like a powerhouse here. I'm curious to see this Evil-Lynn too. I like the concept of drawing more on MOTU's sword and sorcery roots than relying too much on the more overtly technological elements it adopted later in the line.

First off I really like your designs and wish that matty would make something like these along with what they have now. Your Tri-clops looks like he would actually be tough and not the easy of a challenge for the Masters. Your Beastman looks really cool also though I would like to see a comparison in size next to the other Characters. Also something about his face screams Scott Howard from Teen Wolf. He is very nice though. I can't wait to see your other guys.

I also am sad to hear you've retired the old vision. Not that these aren't cool too, I just prefered that style. And okay, there is one thing that bothers me with these. It's the almost uniformly thick torso. It's not so bothersome on He-Man, but it kinda makes Skeletor look fat. It might have something to do with the lack of shading on him, so I hope you'll add that at some point.

Other than that though, they're really good. Skeletor's face is especially worthy of mention, I love that sinister look, it's the perfect Skeletor! He-Man is looking very nice too. But where can I see that scaly-visored Tri-Clops, I didn't know such a strange beast existed?

Thanks all. The kind words and critiques are always welcome

Although this is more of a design thread with a vision, I'm happy you all spoke up about the colouring. You're right about it. They need it. It may take me longer to produce the pics but the end result is simply "better".

So, I went ahead and updated the He-Man, Skeletor and Tri-Klops and a Beast Man update is on the way soon enough.

@Mechthild - Yeah, he does look fat and unfortunately, I think the shading didn't trim him down enough. It was just a bad strap placement that couldn't be avoided and still "work".

Oh yeah! The shading makes them look a lot better! Just more substantial all around. I'm also excited to see your Frazetta styled female characters, I'm sure they will look great!

Hopefully not but please remember that the last project started in 2006. On or off, it's still been 4 years since it was conceived.

Hey nice to see you back again. Pretty good stuff. I like the squat proportions. Something seems a little off to me in the formarms and hands but otherwise I think these are really cool. I like them better with the shading now. I really like the color scheme for Beastman (no blue loin cloth). Skeletor looks crazy evil. I'm excited to see how you approach the technology aspect of MOTU.

As to your old project, I liked it but, you did most the characters. That was an awesome run but, I'm glad you're moving on and doing something new.

Sure can I'll organize that for my next character posting. I'll tweak the character pages to include both side-by-side.

Is it the angle? Maybe the forearm comes out at a different curve than it should in comparison to the hand? I know the shadow on the upper part of hand (below the bracer) doesn't help any. I'd like to fix it now instead of later because I'm seeing it now too.

As for my approach to the tech-side of things... I'm really not sure which direction I'll go. Clean MYP-esque or clockwork, steampunk industrial. I'm thinking the latter as I really want to mix up the vibe these squat little beings give off.

A steampunk/clockwork look would be a really fun, different take on these - I would love to see that.

I do think the hand being at a different angle is what looks a little strange. I think if the knuckles are facing more towards the viewer it would look a little better.

I'd be interested in that too, as I liked both, though I do feel the shaded ones are better, and more substantial looking overall, the flats look cool too. As long as it's not too much trouble anyways.

I'd say steampunk and clockwork would work best with what we've seen so far, but if I could make one suggestion I'd say this, and the trouble is as I only have one example from the actual MOTU line, which is the Talon Fighter and Point Dread, but what about sort-of an earthen or stone-age mechanical system?

I've always loved how the Talon Fighter seems to look carved or built of stone, but is an incredibly advanced flying machine, and mix in it's castle tower looking dock, Point Dread, and it just screams "Magic Vessel of the Gods" to me. So for a character like Roboto, what about some kind of Golem with living stone and crystal parts mixed together? I'm not sure how exactly that would work, but I just love the idea of it. Maybe look at the Colossi from Shadow of the Colossus PS2 videogame for ideas?

Definitely a cool idea and one that I didn't consider. I'll have to see what I can come up with and then see if it fits. I don't want to stray too far from the original designs... I more so want to stylize them and add some twists that could work. Actually, this idea might be a better for a character like Optikk.

Of all the versions of you updating the images, I like the side-by-side images best, and definitely like the shaded versions most!

Can't wait to see the rest.
(Though I was hoping in the earlier Sllohcin-vision to get He-Ro....)

    Thanks

I'm not sure I'll be hitting up a He-Ro either. I'm not really that much of a fan.

So I'm still working on the ladies but I haven't been able to nail the look I want yet. I shelved them for a bit and did up Jitsu in their stead. He's someone I haven't done in a long while.

I wanted to sort of shy away from his vintage head design as well as keep him mystical in origin versus the 200X tech (that lends itself better to Fisto imo.) I thought the balding top-knot look could be a fun one. Kind of Akuma-ish and that works for me. More demonic vibes for him too... from his gauntlet or maybe gifted by Skeletor or something. Regardless, he's evil and has pointy ears and I see him as one of Skeletor's main cronies this time around.

So everybody, any idea who I should do up next while I'm working on the "womens"?

I could do an easy double-header with Moss Man and Faker or I could do Mer-Man or Scare Glow or jump into the Heroic Warriors and hit up somebody like Ram Man. I have my main core groups but I'm looking to do them all up anyway so now or later doesn't matter to me.
