Motu Redesign Challenge #98 - Zilora and Sibylline!

It's a ONE-TWO knockout! Or perhaps I should say "knock-out(S)"?

Since the last poll was actually a draw, and since I figure both character deserve a chance, here we go! Our task this round, is to redesign both of these lovely ladies.

Zilora was the Pre-Ternian queen of the Snake Clan, a people that lived in the times before the Castle Grayskull was built.

Sibylline is actually a reformed Evil Warrior! In the past she used her mystic powers for her own
gain, but since then she has repented and is now seeking to join King Randors forces.

Hey, anybody else ever wondered if their could be a connection between the two ladies? What with the Snake-Motif and all that. And maybe to a certain Spirit-Guide of He-man, with Pre-Ternian origins even!

The rules are as EVER:
All people who choose to participate will have **TWO**(2) weeks to come up with a redesign for this
character. You can use any medium you wish. You can sketch, paint, make a 3-D model,
make a sprite, make a custom action figure, whatever you want. Its entirely up to you!

As well, you don't have to force yourself to make your design conform to the new OR OLD cartoon &
comic book's style. Be as drastic in your redesign as you see fit. Whatever makes you happy,
all that is necessary is that you add something all-NEW, however big or small, to the characters visual appearance.

If you can't think of a new design, or just hate the idea of working on this character,
you do not have to feel obligated to participate in this particular challenge.
You will still be free to participate in any future challenges you wish.

PS: The poll is a bit different this time, because the next round will be a SPECIAL ROUND! I will
try to talk Patreek into joining me for a joint venture, where the Redesign Challenge and Character
creation challenge intertwine, for something a little bit unexpected.

Zilora needs little more time and she will be here too later, but here's semi-evil wizard. Only minor touches, I like the original enought.

Well, here are my entries:



Not a drastic change for Sibyline, but if it's not broken, don't fix it, right? I did envision her as hypothetically sharing parts with my version of Shokoti if they were ever to be made into action figures. I did a subtle scale-effect on her shoulders and legs, as if she were descended from the Snake Men.



Again, the changes to Zilora aren't drastic. I added a pattern to her boots reminiscent of 200x King Hsss greaves.

My backstory on her would be a little different, or at least more fleshed-out. I see her as being a powerful leader of the Snake Clan. King Hsss (before he took the name Hsss and went overtly evil) got her to marry him (the whole "good disguise" aspect of King Hsss) so he could use his position as her consort to gain power within the Snake Clan.

Then, he betrayed her by starting the Cult of Serpos and started changing fellow members of the Snake Clan, using the power of Serpos to turn them into literal Snake Men. The Snake Clan was shattered, but Zilora and the remaining members of her clan aided King Grayskull in his battle against the newly-named King Hsss and his army of Snake Men.

Anyway, that's what I got.

Awesome boots your Sibylline has, J-bird! I really like the partial fur effect.

Interesting little changes. You've basically given her more of a slightly barbaric look, and a few changes to make her less Teela-like. Cool stuff, Wille! It works quite well.

That's some good stuff, J-bird! It's a bit funny the way you've drawn Sibylline btw, because it looks like she's wearing some type of ULTRA-SHORT-SHORTS! 0_o Err... is it like a bathing-suit, or like a really short dress?

Pretty cool idea with the more humanoid Snake-Men ancestry btw. Like, her tribe was once related to the Snake Men, eons ago.

Ah, and Zilora. Neat ideas, mostly tweaks to her existing style. I rather like her hair btw, a very fresh and original hair-style. And she looks really determined and defiant, a bit p***ed even!

Very discreet changes here, I see. I rather like her shield there, it can be used as a weapon against the Snake-Face variant of Snake Men. Not quite feeling her Snake-Dragon-head boots tho', they feel a bit over the top.

If I can find the time between the holiday hootenannies, consider me interested in at least 1...

Rocking, can't wait ot see what you do with em' Jafari, especially if you give them your own unique bio like you did with Gygor (which I think was way better then the official bio BTW)

I'm working on my Sibylline as we speak, and already have an idea for Zilora to when I get to her...hoping Thanksgiving doesn't slow me down too much.

Yes, that's a short(er than I realized) skirt on Sibyline there, much like Teela had in the first couple mini-comics ... although it is pretty short. Of course she'd have like cheerleader-type-shorts underneath it for fighting and whatnot.

I'm glad those are the words you picked for Zilora, as that's the exact attitude I imagine her having at this point (determined and defiant). She is ready to cut some Snake Men.

Predabot, can you give us a definite deadline? I'd like to know if I have even a chance of finishing them both...

And man, I really, really hope you can get the time to redesign these two! I'd love to see what you come up with.

Wow! two in one? Absolutely these ladies should be connected to both the Goddess and Teela. Hints about that will be in my Unofficial bios as well as the (sigh) rest of Book of Evil when life makes finishing that possible. I love the redesigns, Monikasvo and j-bird. I really like that visionary-esque shield! Here's my drawings of these ladies:

I'll see what I can do. I have a very clear idea of where I want to go with Zilora, but I haven't even watched Sibylline's episode yet. If I don't make it to the deadline, I'll post them in another thread. I'm just starting to get the hang of the male form again, so it's good to have something to force me to draw women as well.

UPDATE: It seems like I'll be lucky if I get to finish a colored version of even Zilora. So far all I have is one preliminary costume sketch and a bunch of anatomically distorted failures. If all else fails, I'll just post the sketches and leave it at that.

gbagok, they look so cool! Zilora is good like your artwork always, but Sibylline's dedign is just perfect. She feels same character, even with those huge improvements.

Here are my Zilora and Sibylline:





Well i did some sort of background story for those two and tried to connect them a little bit.

With their outfits i tried to stay close to the original. Sibyllines one piece is more over the top, i gave her bra more the shape of Snake teeth and added some of Ziloras spiral theme to her too. Ziloras oufit is more detailed and i took the spiral theme and put it on her buttons and her weapon but i updated both their Weapons, i gave Ziloras "Staffaxe" an extra spear and made Sibylinnes wand a "Wanddagger" but if you look closley the dagger is the spear.

As i imagine the spear broke apart and was later transformed into a ritual dagger with a Snake head. Maybe it was used by the priests of the Snake Clan for blood sacrifices and centuries later stolen from a grave by Sibylline and her teacher.
Sibyllines teacher was an adherent of the Snake Clan who taught her old spells and told her the history of this long gone civilization.
In the grave Sybilline even found a golden shackel which she decided to wear around her hip, it looks liked snake teeth but on the end there is a tiny spiral. To the day she never learnd it´s secret but is determent to solve this ancient mystery.

I was just getting close to add the finishing touches to Zilora and get started on Sibylline today, and then I had to go and burn my hand. Now I've got nasty painful blisters on my index finger (I'm writing this with only one hand ). So I decided my Zilora has to be good enough as she is and post her. Hopefully I can still follow up with something more than a mere sketch of Sibylline. I've got something surprising in store for her!



I got something of an Aztec vibe from Zilora so I used that as a basis for the redesign, with something from ancient Egypt and China thrown in too (all of them cultures who revered snakes to some degree). I also wanted to play up the Preternian angle making her seem clearly more primitive and let the snake theme really dominate her look. I envision her as both a shaman and a warrior, a queen more in vein of Boudicca than Marlena. I switched the axe for a bow simply because it felt more fitting for the snake theme and the amazonian look of Zilora.

She's simply beautiful man! Sorry about your accident, hope you put some aloevera on that to ease the burning . Can't wait to see Sibylline when you can complete her. I'm just about finished with Sibylline myself, just some last inks then I can get started on Zilora, my birthday was on friday so I spent more of my weekend celebrating with friends (and watching Deathly Hollows pt 1 to) Now I need to really go at these ladies !

Lookin' gooood as always, gBagok. I think your Sibylline in perticular really lend herself to the more detailed look.

I think the only thing I'm missing that I was hoping for, was more of a neck-connection for the two white prongs that Sibylline has. In the original art, it always looked like that was what they were shooting for, but it got a bit unclear in the actual execution.

Excellent ideas, Niki! You introduce a fairly organic and natural way for the two of them to be connected, without it feeling forced.

And I must say, you keep getting better in these challenges. Especially when it comes to your digital colouring. Keep it up.

I rather like your ideas to look at ancient cultures that revered snakes, makes sense.

I think you did very well with the time that was alloted to you, and I'm really sorry to hear about your hand, man. Keep us posted how that hand is doing, and if you'll need more time.

No need, the aloe vera worked wonders! The pain is gone and even the blisters seem to have gone down (mostly).

I wasn't sure if the deadline was today or tomorrow (that is to say, if I need to post my redesign before the 7th or at the 7th), and I wouldn't have any time tomorrow anyway, so I hurried up and got Sibylline done.



The reason I went for such an extreme change was because I felt in the cartoon she looked too obviously like a "goodie", even though we were told she was supposed to be someone comparable to Evil-Lyn (and a former friend of hers in fact). I think it would have added a lot to the story if we didn't know if she had really had a change of heart and had to doubt her good intentions ourselves. That would also save Orko from looking like a bigoted caricature.

So because of this, I tried to make Sibylline someone who you'd think would fit right in with the Evil Warriors, and consequently look out of place in Eternos. I went with darker colors and let the snake scale motif dominate her outfit. Then I decided to go the extra mile and give her blue skin. I may not like the addition of the Gar race in MOTU much, but I have nothing against having blue skinned people on Eternia. And if you do need to have a race that is treated with distrust, Sibylline being one of them would add an interesting dimension to her story. Not to mention that after taking all the clear blue out of her outfit, I just had to find some other place to use it...

I did make a caucasian version of Sibylline too, but I'll save that for a later time because this is my "official" redesign.

@Predabot - As much as I want to do this challenge, I just had some work come in, so I'll have to step out of the challenge.

I don't mean to be annoying again but could we get an extension till Friday? I'm gonna post my Sibylline in just a bit, but I'm afraid I need more time with completing Zilora if that's okay.

And that's an awesome Sibylline Mechthild, an interesting twist by making her a Gar BTW, it would make some sense about the whole distrust in that regard, although I just think Orko was simply bitter about her magic working for her and not just making Duncan get wet

An interesting concept indeed, Mechthild! I'm diggin' it pretty good, only thing I'm not entirely feeling is her purplish tone of skin. It blends a bit too much with her other purple colours, and the whatchamacallit Silver.

How do you think she would look if she had more of the full, blooming kind of blue that Keldor has in MotuC?

I always figured that she might have changed her style at one point or another, so as to do a fresh new start, so to speak. Maybe when she's doing court-magic and such, she has a completely different outfit? But when she inevitably ends up in the thick of it, she dons her old stripes and starts kickin' butt!
