    Queen Greyskull
    Real name: Y'Vonn Greyskull

Growing up under the oppressive tedium of the Plains of Perpetua, Y'Vonn was eventually driven mad by the Snake Men that kept ruining her flower arrangements. Others flocked Greyskull's cape when she wasn't looking, and her anger continued to grow. Legend tells at that point Y'Vonn spoke the words: "I've had it with these Snake Men on this Plain!" She then held aloft her Powerful Power Sword of Power and said: "By the power of me!" and proceeded to kick their asses. (This was considered inappropriate by the Animal Welfare Society of Eternos because the donkeys in question were not responsible for where their owners had let them graze.)

After annoying the Snake Men enough for them to leave, Greyskull joined forces with the cosmic warrior She-Ro against the juvenile delinquent Hec-Tor Kur and his gang who kept stealing things from her royal junkyard. The lawful owner of the Power Sword of Power, Y'Vonn magically passed her essence into the blade - making sure the greedy relatives of her late husband wouldn't get their hands on it. After her death the sword was split in two by her children who couldn't decide which one should be the rightful inheritor. Little did they know the power had transcended into the holiday-themed Globe of Snowing that She-Ro had brought her as a souvenir from the Timely Dimension.

So... Yeah. Codeine-containing painkillers can do funny things to you.

It's a sad tale involving mistakes and misinformation, loss of tissue, PTSD, mirror avoidance, years of waiting, several cartilage implants and general uncertainty. They speak about losing face, but usually not in such literal way. I still don't know the ending to this story myself, so this is as much I'm willing to share so far.

But so that I don't end a post in such a silly thread on a sour note, here's something not completely different:

Since a lot of people seem to have sort of alter-ego fan characters, I thought why not make one myself? This is Met-Hild, a distant descendant of Queen Greyskull and the guardian of the No-Longer-That-Powerful Power Sword of Power. Also know by the mysterious alias "A-List Variant".

Wow - I feel for that. To have such a problem so exposed, must leave one feeling very vulnerable, unsure & alienating.

I've seen amazing things with skin transplants recently - whole faces, noses & ears seemlessly re-attached & so on. But it is easy for me to wonder at such specialised & expensive treatments in this detached way... Still - was an attempt at encouragement.

It's quite hard to describe what it's like to someone who hasn't gone through it. It's amazing how important your facial features can be to your whole identity and feelings of self worth etc. You won't miss your mirror image until it's gone forever.

Well, thankfully they've been able to use my own cartilage, so I don't need any immunosupressants. I guess it might have been easier for the surgeons if they could have just sewed on a whole new nose. Having to work around old scar tissue meant they had to spend twice as long on the operation than they had planned. I guess we haven't quite reached the point where you can just harvest some stem cells and grow a new face, sadly.

You mean Queen Greyskull? But of course she has a pet, her loyal green cat Mr. Fluffykins, who transforms into the formidable fighting cat Ang-Gor-Ra by the power of Greyskull, or if you try to rub his tummy.

I'll have to draw Queen Greyskull riding him into battle against the gang of Hec-Tor some day...

For sure... Your face is usually the first thing people see & make appraisals & judgments about you. That loss of personal continuity must be like a death, a regular reminder of the heavy marks of time. I wish you well in your recovery, you must have to draw pretty deep into yourself at times. Plus, you do have a cool parallel with a certain Gar, rebel prince...!

Definite advantage! I know a guy who had a double lung transplant - mostly he complains about the diet he must endure! It's amazing what people can survive.

I got Hellboy vol. 7 for christmas, and after reading it was inspired to try sketching Whiplash Mignola style. Somehow there's just something about the character design that I thought fit his style real well. Not that I can claim to have captured it faithfully. I did try to make it more mignolaish by adding colors and "ink" in photoshop:

    So... yeah.

You have no idea how close you just got to the truth! It's like dying, yet somehow a part of you stays alive. A part, not the whole. My therapist keeps talking about a possibility of rebirth, and I hope she's right.

My basic understanding of life is that we are beings devoted to homeostasis and psychological meaning. We get a healthy spurt of initial growth and then slow decay against the tides of physics. The longer you live the more death - whether in purely medical terms or as a way of describing powerful discontinuities; trauma, divorce, homelessness, insanity, illness, etc.

The list of human horrors is virtually endless, but humans have a long & inventive list of coping mechanisms.
    ...
I can't help but be interested in you & your situation, & I've had to stop myself several times in writing so as to not be too personal or sound like I'm dispensing unasked for advice.

So I'll stick to questions that leave it to you to answer or not - what kind of therapy are you doing? Is your artwork in anyway involved in your healing? It is a common to perceive personal pain in or behind artistic expression, so I cannot help but wonder... I'm a fan of useless things like art & MOTU toys & answers to questions

I think the more personal questions & your interest in Mechtild might be better off with PMs then for her to answer here & for everyone to see... just a thought, as the thread really should be about the artwork.

Of course if she doesn't mind that's cool too.

More like a mirror universe counterpart. Only it's a mirror that doesn't turn left into right but Y into X.

Oh, I'll write a bio sooner or later. The reason the sword isn't as powerful anymore is actually revealed in Queen Greyskull's bio. Keep reading the bios!

It's cognitive psychotherapy, nothing out of the ordinary (as far as psychotherapy goes) really. I'd say it's more that the healing is involved in my art! I wouldn't be able to do this stuff if I was still in the mental state I was in before. But no, there's no connection to the therapy if that's what you are thinking. Whatever gets filtered in through my subconscious is a different matter entirely...

I have no problem with it, honestly. If things get too personal I can always choose not to answer. But if others feel all this offtopic discussion is detrimental to the thread, I'm ready to move it to PM's.

It just struck me that you draw a lot of faces - all very expressive & individualistic. I've wondered how much you have studied faces - certainly your depictions attain an anatomically accurate & realistic representation of the kinds of face these characters might have.

Well, I thought about it, and you do have a point. I have drawn a disproportionate amount of faces, even if I include all the sketches I've never scanned and the redesign challenge pieces. Even considering it takes less time to draw a face than a full body, it's still more than possible there's some subconscious process going on I hadn't noticed. And I'm not going to try and rationalize it after the fact, because that just leads to telling of convenient just-so stories.

Well, I guess studying faces is something every would-be artist has to do to learn the craft, and I have a lot to relearn after years of not drawing anything. I just wish I had more and better references to work from.
