Motu classics club eternia subscriptions - four horsemen

Hey, all of you He-Fans and She-Ravers!

As we’re sure you’ve all heard by now, the number of subscribers to the 2013 Masters of the Universe Classics Club Eternia at Mattel (MattyCollector.com) has dropped drastically from last year to this year. This has put the future of the line in danger of being cancelled altogether.

We’ve seen a lot of the discussion on various message boards and blogs surrounding this issue, and many people have commented that this may be some sort of ruse by Mattel just to sell more subscriptions and that there’s no true danger of the line ending. Well, you should know by now that we’ve always tried to be as open, honest and transparent with the fans as we could possibly be, and we’re telling you now that the Masters of the Universe Classics action figure line IS currently in danger of ending sooner than expected because of a sudden and drastic drop in the number of subscriptions to the line.

Mattel has never reached out to us for our assistance about anything of this nature in the past. In this case they have, so we know this is serious and we’re 100% confident that everything you’ve heard described by them is absolutely true, but it also tells us that there are people at Mattel that are as passionate about this stuff as many of the fans are and don’t want to see it end prematurely again. They’re not trying to get subscriptions because they need the extra money. As beloved as Masters of the Universe Classics is, monetarily it’s barely a blip on Mattel’s enormous radar. MotU Classics is a sort of love letter to all of the fans of the property who’ve kept the Eternian fire alive for this line over the past thirty years, and hopefully will continue supporting the property in their usual rabid manor however they can for many years to come.

We’re not going to get into the speculation of why or how the number of subscriptions might have so drastically dropped between last year and this year. You’ve probably read all of that stuff over and over again at this point. But we will say that even with the hiccups that have taken place throughout the history of the MotU Classics line, we still feel that it’s still one of the coolest toy lines produced today (possibly ever – at the risk of sounding conceited), and it amazes us that a massive corporation like Mattel has such love for the toy line and the fans that they’d continue to make every effort to produce the figures even without any sort of media backing or any huge return on their dollars invested. What may seem like just a giant toy producing machine to many of you, is actually a large group of people that are just as excited and anticipatory as each of you are about each new MotU Classics figure’s release. When these “hiccups” within the line occur, you can bet that it upsets them just as much as, if not more than, it upsets you and us.

So what happens now? Well, at this point we’re going to beg you to subscribe if you haven’t already. And the only real reason we’re begging at this point is so we’ll all have a shot at getting all of those awesome characters that you’ve all wanted to see in 3D plastic form in the MotU Classics line since it’s inception. We want them too! Ninjor? Mermista? Dragstor? Octavia? Squeeeze? Hydron? Peekablue? Saurod? Rio Blast? Batros? Gwildor? (okay… maybe not Gwildor) Freakin TWO-BAD?!? C’mon. Cornboy WANTS his Two-Bad… Are you going to make Cornboy cry? Don’t make Cornboy cry. There are obviously many more characters we could list here, but you get the idea.

We’re not saying that any of the characters listed above are currently scheduled to be made, and we can’t guarantee that we’ll be able to get to every single character that’s been requested, but what we can guarantee is that if the subscription levels needed to keep this line alive are not met, there’s absolutely no way we’ll get to see all of the characters we’d like to see in MotU Classics.

So, the bottom line is – PLEASE subscribe, and please spread the word as much as possible to get others to subscribe as well. There’s only a little more than a week left to get your subscription rolling, so time is of the essence. You can go here http://www.clubs.mattycollector.com/...rID.5373544308 to begin your 2013 subscription to the MotU Classics Club Eternia.

We’re not asking as a bunch of guys who’re working on the line. We’re asking as fans of Master of the Universe and this toy line. Please subscribe to the 2013 Masters of the Universe Classics Club Eternia.

    Thanks!

Well this is a nice touch... but damn, if we are only at 50% today, I don't honestly see much hope.

I'm going to buy a sub and do my part though... so prove me wrong people!

Ironically of all of the figures that they listed, Two-Bad and Gwildor would be two of my most wanted, followed distantly by Squeeze, with the rest being ones that I wouldn't be too upset over not getting if they never get to them before the line ends.

But I understand the sentiment all the same and appreciate the 4HM stopping by and making it. I am. I don't want to see this line end, and I've signed up for my 2013 sub. I hope we make it!

This affirms the reality of the situation and the urgency to subscribe for anyone who hasn't yet. We fans appreciate your guys' love for the property and all the hard work you put into making the best action figures in the industry today. Keep up the great work, hopefully for 2013, 2014 and beyond.

And there in lies the problem. You can't tell me what I'm subscribing for. Sorry but my blind faith in Mattel and indirectly you guys ultimately has a price. And I've learned that price is over $35 a figure with tax and shipping.

Nobody needs to be told to sub up if they love the line. It's actually insulting to hear. A simple preorder system would work wonders. If minimum orders on a character aren't met then that character doesn't get made. Simple. That way I am not paying over $80 for 3 characters that I don't know and only appeared on some obscure model kits in the 80's.

I will keep repeating till someone at Mattel listens. This sub is costing close to $700 not $500. If Mattel is so transparent then how come they don't tell the subscriber the truth about what it's going to really cost you with tax and shipping? Hmm?? And how is the line going to get any new subscribers if there is no day of sale stock? I highly doubt that a new collector is going to be willing to shell out $700 on a bunch of obscure D-Listers just to get say Ram-Man. Remember, today's day of sale buyers are tomorrows subscribers. Mattel is killing the line in their business practices and if it dies then so be it. But I will not be guilted into a sub by anyone; fans, Mattel, TG or even The Four Horsemen. Stop treating us like children, show REAL transparency and tell us what things REALLY cost and what exactly we are buying and maybe I will be more inclined to buy a sub.

Well, that was a dose of harsh reality...
So things are bad, and one of the best toy lines going is probably for the high jump... Thanks for your work 4H, it was appreciated. I've done my part and can do no more; it's in the hands of others now.
I survived the 2013 sub ordeal!

Thank you 4H for posting this! MotU Classics IS the best toy line! Here's hoping that subscription numbers continue to rise. There's plenty of time for it to happen! Let's keep this going!

Mattel sound like the sub is the only possible business model.

When it becomes clear that people can't drop $500 to $1000 (especially when they don't want everything on offer), why don't Mattel bring out the back-up plan?

    Wait, they don't have one.

Now we have to watch this whole thing go down, slowly... 14 days left of slow death.

I agree, there HAS to be alternatives to a sub. Mattel could still work this to make it work even if a sub fails

By the way, just so you know, the Gwildor comment is a bit of, kind of inside, long running joke. We'd actually LOVE to get our chance to do a Gwildor figure.

Thanks four horsemen for this post and for all your wonderfull work on the line.

I will add one more sub to the two I have already purchased. I know that one sub is only a drop in the ocean needed to curry on the MOTUC Line but if all the fans that can buy one more sub (even if they have to sell some of the figures afterwards) we can help the line to survive. Long live MOTUC!

Wow! Those would be awesome figure to own. If they only were part of the 2013-14 subs, and not any additional unrelated items like "Fighting Foe Men", I would buy the Subs, no questions asked.

Horsemen, I really appreciate what you are doing, but I can't be force to buy figures I don't really want, nor I have to buy so I can sell, most times for less that what I've spent on them.

I hope that after what you have written here, that the subscription gets to more than a 100% for 2013, and that the line continues for many years.

    First, Gwildor is Awesome!

Next... The 4 Horsemen have chimed in. To me, this is huge. The guys have an incredible rep. They are being straight up, and they deserve way more than the benefit of the doubt. While I can understand people speculating on Toyguru, I just don't question the 4 Horsemen. They've proven their integrity over and over.

I think if we can get through 2013, then there is a full year to work on 2014 for boosting sales. I think this year we all (Fans, Mattel, TG, 4H) took for granted that sales would be just fine. This is a big bucket of cold water thrown on everyone. I do wish that the Mattel execs would see this and give some slack on the issue. But I think TG is being straight up, there was zero hint of danger at SDCC, and over night it hit. It's not a dastardly plan.

No Gwildor = Incomplete MOTU Line

Gwildor is just about the only figure I would come back for at this point.
